My first attemp at building a roof rack. Thanks to arch2b for the detailed instructions and very illustrated how to on this project. just wanted arch to know what he does is used by many. I am not happy with the way it turned out. As soon as i can replenish my brass stock I will build another one. Hopfully it will turn out better than my first.

Thanks arch2b

That's very good work, period, let alone for a first attempt. Brass isn't exactly the easiest material to get the hang of working with.

I think my biggest problem and the most fustrating part of the whole project was not having the proper tools to work with. I had to make do with what I had. before I start the next one I will make a little trip to lowes and get what I need.

And My god man Clean up that work space

Belive me it didnt look like that when I started....for now I have a limited work space...BTW thanks for noticing.:)

...Cadbury cream eggs...Can I have one
(pHREDD tosses a cadbury cream egg to Yugo DSC Maxxer)

I will share my eggs but got to hang onto my rack.

That looks great, but I think I know what you don't like about it. Parts of it look uneven, not straight. But the solder points look clean. Paint it and it'll look even better.

What are you talkin about Stoovey?!?! I think that is one of the best roofracks i have ever seen, i think arch might have some SERIOUS competition!! I love it!! I think it looks absolutley perfect! I will have pictures of my painted roofrack up soon...good work man!!

Thanks RedRSX, Stoovey does have a point though. Some of the uprights are off just a tad. Nothing that couldnt be fixed with a pair of pliers. But hey I am gonna leave it as is as a reminder....I still have a ways to go to be as good as arch. I guess thats why I didnt like it. It just didnt mesure up.

I will be looking for the pics of your roof rack!!!

If at first you dont succeed, scrap it and start over...LOL

pHred,

What mesh material did you use for the bottom! it looks tighter than the one Arch2b has been using? Can you share the knowledge?

Really nice job! Mine is soon to be finished, but I doubt it will come out as clean!

yup...will do, i have already done 2 roofracks...so this one is much better than the first couple...however...it is still a little off in some aspects...plus i used 3/32" solid copper rod...very VERY stiff stuff:p

What mesh material did you use for the bottom!

I bought it at my LHS. Its Brass Mesh .010 thick it comes in a 12"x12" roll stock #6097 it cost $10.99

Their web address is "ksmetals.com"

Cheers!

Thanks!! We'll look for it! It looks like you did not have to make the additional cross bar to stiffen up the rack either? am I correct? is this mesh replacing the cross bar?

is this mesh replacing the cross bar?

THe mesh is very strong when flat and I soldered right to the rack. thats why I used the brass mesh. I didnt feel it needed the center cross bar.

(really i was to lazey to add it)

(would you belive I just plain forgot it)

Oh well.....

The stranchions are nothing to worry about, unless you have the mider box/x-acto saw like Arch its almost impossible to get those little buggers the same length... If you look at the roof racks I make they are almost never the same length...

The spy shots look promising! About the issue of the parts being straight and/or even: I'm just anal about details like that. Some people aren't, and that's fine...but I am. LOL

I here ya, "I learnt" my lesson soldering as you go....this time as I built and designed, i used hot glue so I could see instant results without having to trash it for messing something up.

Ok here is another prototype shot a littlle different than the last photos. this is not finished or sanded or even the ends trimed up. I may not finish this one. Not sure if it even goes with the OL.

it looks good. once your done you are going to sloder it up right, or just leave the hot glue on it. i love hot glue i use it on everything, well all parts you cant see. the other part you can see, if its metal its solder, if it plastic it a tiny bit of supa glue.
