Interesting link Stagg. I have done a lot of experimenting with the mats as well... I believe that RCP has done quite a bit of experiementing with the cheap mats as well, but don't quote me on that. Ironing is an interesting way to make it smoother, but I don't know why anyone would want that, I figured they would just want to flip to the other side which is more slipepry anyway.

Lightfighter, you gotta let me know how you did those corners! That looks sweet! As much as I LOVE the RCP Tracks I just cound not spend 400~500 dollars on a combination of tracks to get the size that I wanted.

My Costco has the mats for 9 bucks for 6 2x2 squares plus edges and I just had to do it. I picked up 14 packs and hope to get a 26'x12' track running this weekend similar to this:

How did you stick the barriers down? Double sided tape?

lightfighter
2005.01.20, 09:13 PM
corners are easy.........take your arse to home depot and get the flexable corner bead for drywall.......there is a type that is made for making arches and round walls

Then my friends get yourself a box of push pins and push them through the bead. don't try using the holes........this works so good that my 1/18th scale cars which are able to run over 30 mph can hit the wall and nothing happens

Well just to let eveveryone know how my costco mats track turned out it goes something like this:

Costco Mats Track (http://www.socketcom.com/ftp/DSC00126.JPG)

Total dimensions 12' X 28'

135 bucks 14 packs of 6 piece 2x2 ft foam square kits

10 bucks of 3/4 inch PVC pipe

8 bucks of HPI racing dots

5 bucks PVC insulation

about 158 bucks.

This was our first test of the surface and we intend to use create a technical track with the mats but have not decided on wall material yet. Awesome surface to race on although a minimum of 20 deg tries or treads/radials is necessary for traction. 6 can race on a track this size outout any problems and a good time was had by all. Can't wait for the next layout!

Another layout we tried on Friday:

layout2 (http://www.socketcom.com/ftp/track2.JPG)

This was insanely fun and we had a blast. Size is 16'x28' feet at the longest sides.

where did u get the material and the side stuff

BovineD

I purchased the Mats at Costco. They were 8.99 for 6 pieces which included 10 edge pieces that you see as the rails on the track. I purchased 14 packs for 135.77 with tax and the two tracks above use all the pieces but not the edges. There is plenty of that to go along. The edge pieces are just flipped up so that it sits up at 90 degrees from the mat. Awesome surface to race on however the edges do not stand up to collisions so I am looking for another side rail solution. Some are hotgluing the rails directly to the track but I still want the freedom of configuring the tracks.

Similar to this idiot:

item=5958379151 on E B A Y

By the way if anyone buys that I will personally laugh at their stupidity.

ruknd@aol.com
2005.02.24, 02:57 PM
I did the same thing....but I make an area out of the mats and do the rail thing around the edge...I then take the remaining rails and use stick pins to keep them in place for the course.

Personally...I'd go with an RCP track...its barely a few bucks more.

BovineD
2005.02.24, 05:15 PM
not just "a few bucks more"....

A standard RCP Large L is 13 X 10' at the longest edges or if you build that into a rectangle you have measurements of 400cm x 250cm.

For the foam mats that I have you could build a ractangle of 1280cm x 250cm give or take a couple of cms.

basically you would need at least 3 Large L's to get the total amount of racing square foot area to match the 86 pieces of 2' x 2' foam tiles.

Thats 600 dollars versus 135 dollars. Granted I am not factoring in the rails system but you get the idea.

Again again do not misunderstand me I love the RCP tracks and will own 4 Large L;s ONE of these days it's just for now it made more sense economically to try the mats.

See what fun could be had for so cheap? $160 bucks for that layout is awsome. As for the traction you said atleast 20* tires, but most ppl seem to race with lower temp foams anuway.
