Okay, here's the deal, we're looking for the coolest, most exciting, most realistic Mini-Z picture you can come up with. The picture must be at least 640x480, with no text or anything extra added. The picture may be doctored in Photoshop, etc., but not to the extent that it distorts the realism of the image (e.g. no fake 2' wing on the back, but a subtle glint added to the window is okay). The picture must be taken in an environment that would lead the uninformed viewer to think that it's a real car - e.g. no monitors, cats, etc. in the background.

The prize: one set of Square brand "Inch-Up" rims valued at $32.

There is quite a pool of talent here.
This is quite the challenge.
Mini-Z, What are the judging arrangements?

mini-z
2002.04.09, 03:02 AM
SkylineR34man, yes, in a garage would be very cool! Russ, yes, anyone is eligible except employees of Mini-ZRacer.com. Ken, all judging will be done by myself alone.

mini-z -

can we use a custom shell for the mini-z , granted that it is mounted on a kyosho chassis and is a functional RC?

mini-z
2002.04.09, 11:54 PM
Certainly, custom shells are welcome, provided that as you say, they are properly mounted and functional.

Mini Z.

Just to be clear. Can the whole picture be modified (ie resizing of background and forground items and adding trees, grass, ect) as long as the Mini Z stays the same and the picture looks realistic?

UKAR_strjetta

yea, i agree with jetta. we should delay the start of the contest, that way we'll all have time to rush out and ORDER bodies. maybe delay until Apr. 30? (the start, i mean - i can read) JMO

Mini-z,
I was thinking, and maybe you should make doctering photos in Photoshop illegal. I have photo shop 6.0 and I could probly make a pretty sweet ass pic of my mini-z(I don't have a camera so I can't anyway). But not every one has a PhotoShop so that smewhat leaves out those other people that don't have PhotoShop. So maybe you can say "hey mini-z picture doctered in PhotoShop or any other program similar will not be counted" .

but its up to you but I think that would be more fair to those that can't or don't know how to use programs like that.....

Russ
2002.04.10, 10:08 PM
hey now, if I can do it anyone can do it...I pulled photoshop 6, illegally * for free * through a 28.8 modem, and taught myself how to use it. It can be done, it'll just take a week for each, the downloading & the learning :)

Start now!!!!

FIRE THE LASER!!!!!

wow...today has been a very long day for me.....

I cannu do it Captain, the new warp engine configuration routes all the power to the shields..... or something to that effect:D

Ken Mifune

I need to know exactly how much retouching of the car itself is going to be allowed:
-real license plate
-real windshield wipers
-eliminating the huge antenna (and adding the real one)
-real tires
-etc.

mini-z
2002.04.11, 01:51 AM
i-WERKS, yes, all of the background can be dubbed in if you like. Ken, I would say to avoid adding that level of detail, removing the antenna is okay, but adding items that would be very unlikely to appear on a real Mini-Z is probably crossing the line. RE postponing the start date, we'll see how many people still don't have their entries within the last week of the compo and consider extending it based on that.

is it possible to take photoshop out of the competition. most of us don't have photoshop and will not do as well as those who have them:(

If you don't have Photoshop, you can download an evaluation version of Paint Shop Pro, basically, it has the same features Photoshop offers

GME0VR

ok so this sucks.. i have no digicam so i cannot enter this competition.. last competition i _could_ enter i found out about too late (logo comp)..

so neway, here's an idea for those who _can_ enter..

i had thought about taking a photo on a plain background of my mini-z (imprezza decal-ed like a GT racer).

then i was going to find a shot of real cars on a track, possibly at the starting line, or in action driving round the course.

this is where photoshop comes in.. place my mini-z "in the pack" so to speak by using photocomposition techniques. i'd hope to be able to get it looking like my mini-z was in the race with all the other cars.. considering the paintjob, black with a few bridgestone and penzoil decals, i'd have to use a photo of a GT race (production sports cars etc)

hope this gives someone ideas :)

mini-z
2002.04.12, 12:25 AM
GME0VR, the deadline is far enough away that you could get film developed if you have a regular cam, and then get that scanned, or put on photoCD, etc. Just an idea :)

GME0VR
2002.04.12, 12:34 AM
yeah thats an option i suppose.. altho i'd wanna be pretty sure i had taken the right photo :)

even then tho.. i'm imaging device deprived lol :P

has an official deadline been set?

i'll make some equiries about getting hold of a digicam or 35mm.

Waiting for my own photos to be developed before I enter this competition.

How about a new thread with PICS ONLY and then we can discuss photos somewhere else...

Or maybe mail "mini-z" the pics and then when itīs all over he could post all competition pics somewhere and announce the winner...

If we start to post pics here this thread will explode in a massive discussion abot everything and nothing :D

*where did you get that wing?* *How did you paint that doorhandle?* and so on........

Just my little thought...

We can split it up if it starts to get out of hand - first people need to actually post some pics - who will be the first?! :)

i already have a pic to post up but kind of reluctant in case people copy my ideas heh. so i'm waiting till later to put it up. it would be better if we could submit our photos directly to mini-z and then he puts them up after the deadline is over.

wrcracer
2002.04.16, 10:07 PM
Ingenious - one prob with that, tho. some people may want to wait a bit longer (like me, so i can actually HAVE an entry - its in the mail at the moment). so if mini-z does post the pics, and some arent done, then that just sucks.

mini-z
2002.04.16, 10:31 PM
i already have a pic to post up but kind of reluctant in case people copy my ideas heh

IMO that would give you more reason to post right away - if someone copies, then it will be obvious since you posted first. However, if someone else comes up with the same idea, but posts first - you will look like the copycat! ;)

That's why there are rules. He said to "post" your entry, not email it to him.
And a deadline is a deadline (unless Mini-Z changes it).

Well, since I just got a brand new (used) Mini-Z last week, I guess I'll enter the contest with this picture. Note how the exposed aggregate on the cement resembles gravel.
I could have Photoshopped the antenna out, but I feel that leaving a clue is important. People not into this hobby won't see it until you point it out. Fooled 3 people already.

Anyway, here it is:

Basically, what you can see is a shot of my mz modena. If you have a modena you can recognize the global shape, air intakes, window frames, etc, so the proportions are exactly mini-z specific. The trick is on the reflexions and shadows on the hood and windows to match the real scenery, but even this reflexion layer is half transparent so its my miniz you can see through it...
I first wanted to fill the wheelnuts with a Ferrari logo but this would have been going too far.

ty_r_k
2002.04.22, 11:15 PM
can you explain the steering wheel?

Fovea3d
2002.04.22, 11:45 PM
Ok guys :D
Before going any further here is the trick. Its a mix of the model and the real thing.

It took me some time to find the good angle, even with that there is a mismatch in the perspective. Anyway I can tell you that the modelers at Kyosho made the roof lower on the mini z and that the front spoiler is wider on the original thing. I had to fill the background to hide the real roof, etc. It took me 8 hours to match the two cars, distording the real one but leaving the mini-z intact in shape :)

Its up to mini-z to decide if this will qualify for the contest or not but thats what i really wanted to work on and its the way i made it... ;)

Mini-Z, Shouldn't you block any edits to this thread? As it is right now, one could just change their attachment via edit.

It doesn't appear that we can do this for just one thread or even sub-forum, so what we'll have to do is check the file date as compared to when the post was made and if it's different then we know you've been naughty.

Fovea3d, great job on the 360, we'll allow it. :)

What you need to drive a 1:1 RC car is a RX, a servo for (power) steering and one for the cruise control/brakes...
But DON'T DON'T put such a missile on the streets :D :D :D

Thanks! Yes it took much digicam/pc uploads to set the good angle but also to match the orientation of the light (sun) so it is lit the same way. From the real car pic i wanted to use the background but also some of the reflections and flares on a layer that can be set fro 0 to 100%. O% is actually the mini-z, 100% sets all the flares and sky reflection from the real car. The question was wich amout of this layer would make it look like a 1:1 mini-z but not a real 360 :D I found out it is around 20-30%. So thats my receipe...
I guess some of you are playing with layers now ;)
Come on guys, close your Photoshop and show us more!

i know, i know, i shouldnt be askin this, but....

i need a little help w/ photoshop. i have an image, and its F-in huge. so i have it a 27% zoom. problem is, when i move my Z in, its only at 27% too. in order for it too look right, the Z needs to be a 100%, and the background at 27%. so i need to know how to save the image at 27%, so that i can open it, and when its at 100%, it be the same size as it was at 27%, if that makes any sense. thx. and mini-z - PLEASE prolong the deadline! im so close, yet so far....:(

Fovea3d
2002.04.25, 03:06 PM
I don't use Photoshop but in Paint Shop Pro i use "resize" then i enter the amount of pixels for the new size: 800*600 or 1024x768 depending the settings of your screen, this way it will fit the screen at 100%.
In your case, you should "resize" and not "zoom out" the background image. You can also make the mini-z image 300% larger to match the background but with loss of quality.
Dont forget to save the resized image as a copy.

It was simple, I used real X-ray.

I am working at a hospital as an engineer, and the X-ray uses digital images, so I only exported the images.

If you like it you can find two more pictures here:

Porsche Xray (http://www.bigfoot.com/~pesv/rc/xray.htm)

I have also put an rar-file with the original size for some zoom-exploration!!

Well.... No offense to anyone here who have spent many hours of trixing with pics but i think the "Photo" contest has become more of a paintshop contest...

I mean the thing was that you should take a pic in such environment that the wiever could believe it was a real car, thats how i thought the competition should be...

I have no expectations to win because there are many paintshop pros here :D

It would be so easy to take a extreme pic from some racing situation and paste some stuf to make it look like a Mini-Z

Here is just an example of what i mean:

I might have dropped a photo of my Mini-Z into a separate environment but matching the light & perspective is actually harder than taking a photo of the Mini-Z already in it's surroundings & lighting, and then altering it from that point.
And the only things I added to the car were the windows and the smoke reflection on the side. I still have my layered file, so I can certainly show it without those things if that would make anyone feel better.;)

BTW- My total time was 3:30 hr. and that includes 30 minutes behind the camera.

An unretouched photo contest would be fun. All camera, no pixel-diddling.

i like your pic hehe.. i found it amusing to see a pile of 1:1 scale r/c cars on the track lol :D

also, given some of the discussion related to "cheating" in the contest.. i think a fun contest should be had where the aim was to make the 1:1 cars look like the 1:28 mini-z's.

as it stands, my mini-z is in a state of extreme disrepair and i'm unable to enter this comp.. i dont have spare bodies, and my imprezza shell is _very_ broken atm :(

imho, i think some ppl maybe realising the quality of image that can be obtained using photoshop etc .. and either not having the skill, or the software.

disadvantages such as the lack of skill or software and in my case a broken shell and no digital/slr camera, can pretty well put you out of the running :(

Ken,

Excellent work.
The same can be said about customs. Some just slap a coat of paint and some stickers on their Z's and call them customs. I am one of those who take that route.
As for you Ken, you go the extra mile, your Nomad and DB5 (or 6) are classic examples of quality workmanship.

Why should the same not apply when it comes to this competition? Because someone is prepared to take the time and effort with a camera and PhotoShop, does this make their entry unfair?
No! It just shows you get hobbyists and you get enthusiasts.
The results speak for themselves...

Keep up the faith...

What he said was "subtle glint added to the window is okay"
What we've got lately is not the slightest bit subtle, and it's become less a photography contest and more a Photoshop contest, which is fine, but a little clarity would have helped.

So the rules are vague. The other problem is that whoever posts the last pic has the advantage of seeing everyone else's entry first, then submitting his.

I don't really care who wins the contest, but I think a little thought about such matters might make future contests more fair and more fun for everyone.

And congratulations to everyone who participated are in order. The game is the thing.

Oh, I checked my layered file. My "real" windows are 46% opaque. Which means more of the actual Z-windows are showing through. Does that count as a glint?:D

2. all of the background can be dubbed in if you like.

by no means am i having a go at anyone, but these two statements/comments just struck me as being contradictory.. how are you supposed to take a photo in an environment that would trick the uninformed viewer if you are then allowing a completely dubbed background?

Ken your well known for being a photo shop guru on here... no need to take offense at things like that ;) hehe... almost enough so that you should be disqualified ;)...

When I looked at it I knew there was a car there already in the original photo, thats a given its part of the background, to make the smoke etc, and the interior he just erased the wind shield to let the interior show up... I dont doubt he did someting similar to the reflection.. and updated the color to blue, if the original car wasnt blue, but that IS his mini-z body... it dont have a perfect real car look but its damn close, it would pass in most movies... he may have also cut paste some of the other cloud and squished it in there, I thought he might have also erased in some of the glares from the back ground car as well, maybe not.. but those light effects is the key to getting it real... you get it to look like the shadows etc fit, it will fit, also note the shadow dont realy match the shape of the car... at least not 100% but its damn close.

Ken Mifune
2002.05.01, 02:49 PM
Close Draco but it's not that involved.

---order of layers---
-windows (size, and adjust the transparency)
-smoke reflection (fit to the side of the car. adjust the transparency)
-wheel well smoke (trim to fit)
-Mini-Z (remove background. It helps if it's a solid color backdrop)
-background (no smoke or shadows were added)

Adjust color and hue/saturation levels for all layers.

Voila!;)

Finding a background that needs minimal touch-up, and setting up a good studio shot of the Mini-Z saves alot of time. Matching the lighting is hard.

He was a little steamed. After all, it did end up with 6 headlights. ouch.

Mini-Z,
Are you really judging this all by yourself?

As for myself, I was compelled to show the entries to my friends.

That would be like a "Dreamjob" Ken :D

This guy must have plenty of sparetime....

It pays anywhere from $25-$50 an hour. It's tough getting into this field. I hold a diploma in computer graphics but it's tough getting into this field. Everyone wants 5 years professional experience. If you don't mind $10/h then I'm sure everyone would want to hire you.

Ken Mifune

Pitzon,
Heh heh. Me? Sparetime? I barely made the deadline for this, remember?:D

i-WERKS,
$10/hr?... "Ya want fries with that?"

PITZON
2002.05.02, 06:30 PM
*lol* Yes ofcourse.... But i will need some Spare-Years to be that good :D

But i think "Gunnar G" on that site i linked to has "square" eyes now :D

Wow, The entries look even more convincing in that smaller format!

Out of 17 entries, three of them are straight photos (I think),
and 2 or 3 are custom shells.

I agree - at this size it's harder to pick apart the details. However, the judging is based on the image submitted - these are just thumbnails!

mr. mini-z...

"the judging is based on the image submitted " mini-z

aurgh... my original entry sucks... while editing, i scaled it down a bit to the size you presented in the featured rides, thought i saved it at the scaled down size... but as you could see by my posts, when i submitted it, it gave a weird picture big picture... guess i didn't know how to save it on a smaller scale after all.... it was my first time with photo shop, maybe you can reconsider??? and allow a smaller scaled down size photo instead... puhleeze?

well i guess, it might be asking too much, but at least you heard my side... :D

Ken Mifune
2002.05.06, 02:50 PM
What does that mean? Should we have submitted larger or smaller files?

PITZON
2002.05.06, 03:11 PM
Just means that herman want his pic to be little smaller...

Itīs quite giant =)

I think you should be allowed to make it smaller Herm... That cant hurt anyone

Ken Mifune
2002.05.06, 03:30 PM
Herman, Your file is just over 8Mb when it's open.

The more I think of it,
Why degrade the image by reducing the file size?

Rather, we should be asking to go up in file size.
Maybe I got it backward.

clydethelama
2002.05.06, 05:40 PM
mine is kinda big too, but i think im gona keep it that way, i submitted that pic and not a smaller one, but it does look better smaller.

Ken Mifune
2002.05.06, 07:28 PM
Why does it look better smaller?, the pixels just get bigger.

but I guess it would hide stuff.;)

clydethelama
2002.05.06, 07:59 PM
hte mistakes are still there, but they are less noticable when they are small

herman
2002.05.07, 01:11 AM
ken did you see the pic i submitted (just click on the picture)?
it's probably the most amature photoshop work that was submitted... considering it was my first hand at photo shop, i really can't say it's a winner, but it looks a lot better in the smaller format that mr mini-z showcased.

i agree with clydethelama...
the mistakes (my mistakes) are less noticable when the picture is a whole lot smaller...

btw, how do i save it on a smaller scale?

Ken Mifune
2002.05.07, 01:36 AM
Herman,
Go to Images in the drop down menu bar. Click on Image Size. Now, click on Resample Image. Whether your changing image size by Pixel Dimension, Print Size or Resolution you'll notice at the top of this window it shows the current file size and the new file size.

Save your file before doing this. Then after resampling, be sure to save it under a different name so you can keep your large version in tact.

Ken Mifune

Russ, I was reviewing the entries, and I noticed that in your entry that that must be a bad ass neighborhood. There are bars on all the windows. Even on the second floor.

herman

thanks ken... i hope to try it sometime... er... just found out that the software i was using wasn't photoshop after all... it was photosuite... hehe... sorry my mistake...

Hahaha!! :) It's not the best, and it's not the worst....however, it is smack in the middle of Atlanta. I haven't heard of many building break-ins, but every few months people go after that nice Lexus SC300 in my picture :D

Ken Mifune

Perhaps put bars on the Lexus windows too.

Hey, I'm running a comparison between the 2Mb file and a 14Mb file. So, don't open it unless you want to wait.

Ken Mifune
2002.05.07, 10:31 AM
wow, it pulls up huge and then you can still zoom in and scroll around.

i-WERKS
2002.05.07, 11:34 AM
Ken,

It's not too clear. Did you just enlarge your existing pic?

Ken Mifune
2002.05.07, 12:05 PM
i-WERKS,
Unfortunately, the background pic started at 667K. I sampled it up and sharpened the best it would do, so I could work with smaller pixels.
The car pic started at 2Mb. This I had to res-down because the back ground file was small to begin with. Even after sampling-up on the back ground it was still the lowest common denominator, and they need to match of course. They're close but the car is a little more crisp because it's the focal point. If I were to res it down to the same level it looked too fuzzy.
All-n-all, I think the larger file looks better, on screen(for zooming in) and printed. Compare the two, I think you'll agree.

btw- How big was your original working file(s)?

i-WERKS

Ken.
Unfortunatly, The original pic was already blurry since it was taken while driving about 140km/h I just added more of a zoom blur to give the feeling of speed.
Don't get me wrong, I really like your pic. Very realistic. I think yours is the best I've seen so far. Maybe you can use a gaussian blur for the background to give a SLR photo effect. It would make it look less fuzzy and more of a smooth blur at that size. It would draw even more attention to the car since it's a lot more crisp.

Ken Mifune
2002.05.07, 12:56 PM
i-WERKS, I was kidding that last post. Not only does your entry look convincing, it has drama.
As for gausian blur, it didn't help. It looked really fake. The sharpness from car to background was too drastic.

Adjusting the hue/saturation helped alot, along with color balance and brightness/contrast.

Trimming the car and feathering the edges is what really helps to sell the illusion.

(I still like the idea of a no-retouch photo competition.)

I think there would be a new contest here, with theme "Who have written most entries in the Forum".

I'm pretty sure Ken will be the winner!!!!

Come on... save some space for others Ken.
Not to be rude, but it begins to be annoing with all your photo shop stuff!!

Start a new thread in stead!

Mike,
My number of posts isn't that high. I might be posting extra pics in this thread, but the majority of my posts are replies, and on topic. Maybe we should be consulting you in regard to Photoshop. Give us your wisdom.

Thanks clydethelama,

Mike, Why don't you start another thread. You can post all the fake Mini-Z pics that you want. It's humorous that you're guilty of what you accused me of doing. KMA

MIKE
2002.05.07, 05:55 PM
Dear Ken!

The pic on the fake Altezza was to state an example of how easy you can change a real car into a mini-z!

It wasn't the thought to have the pic in the competition actually!
I don't even want the pic to be there either... I mean, who wants to win with a "fake" pic?!

I understand that you are very good at Photo shop and I don't bother with your or others contributions... I just thoght that the car itself wasn't to be "changed", but the background.

How ever, I don't really care who wins the competition, and all the things I do with my cars... well, I do it for my sake and not for others!

End of story!!

Ken Mifune
2002.05.07, 06:15 PM
Boo hoo. Maybe you should care and you obviously do, or you wouldn't have posted to this thread in the first place.

My next post will be to congratulate the winners.

u said it, i think because we dont know each other and dont know each others thoughts when we read posts, that things could be taken the wrong way and we realize this when we read our own messages, that it could sound derogtory and not at all wat we really mean, so i hope that all the people here can not hold a grudge because of a accident or a mis conception on the matter at hand, and i hope nobody is down on a person they dont know and feel they have a need to persecute them.

that said i think im gona go and look up all the words i spelled wrong and learn how to spell them all.
