I know this probably belongs in the mini-z science but the image codes are off and I figured this would be the closest associated forum.

I'd like to thank arch2b, spoon and ninja and everyone who contributed to arch2b's thread for the insight and info on the build up. As most of you know I'm posted overseas and have been racing here in London with the Stafford club. In January 2007 I'll be heading to Germany for the CRC hosted 12 hour Endurance race. With that said I have to be very mobile.

So based on the modifed pit boxes I've seen here on the forums I decided to give it a shot. I'll let the pics do the talking.

I cant imagine how your gonna get that through airport security. That is a great set up though, what power supply is that? I have that same box, and its just collecting dust, maybe I will do something similar, maybe not so elaborate.

Its definately not a carry on. I'll be checking it. I've check electrical tools and materials for my job before and I traveled with more stuff than that coming to London. I hope this will make it much easier to pack.

The power supply is a standard atx power supply. 400w. I bought mine at a computer show. Well without checking and I found this out later, They don't offer the dual voltage ones as widely as we do. There is just no need. So needless to say I purchased it without checking. it still works for me but when I get back I have to switch it out.

simply awsome!!! much cleaner approach and execution than mine.

i happen to put mine to good use this weekend so it proved a worthwhile exercise for me anyway. it was certainly fun to build which was also a big part of it.

i can't wait to hear how it holds up to your endurance session.

Thanks arch2b! I managed to find a set of MP3 speakers for 3.99 which run off 5v or 4aaa's. I attached it with velcro and ran my PDA on it and it sounds really good! I'm going to hardwire up the speakers to the p/s today. I'll shoot some video LOL.

Jonny called ryanair today and they confirmed that we could carry-on the pit boxes minus the chargers and batteries. Thats no problem. I'll take my chances with the checking the pitbox in and carrying on the car.

found these ipod speakers at a gas station for 3.99. I just ordered a 4gb card for my PDA to watch movies during my flights. So now I can listen to music or watch movies during the endurance race LOL.

i think i found those speakers on ebay, Item number: 150071196513. are these them?
did you wire it to the psu? here are the power ratings fomr the ebay listing
Power Supply : Battery (AAA 1.5V x4), DC 5V (USB Cable for PC) or AC Power Adaptor Cord (Output 6V, 300~800mA)

this could be a very easy fix to play music/video with my zune, very similar to how your pda is setup only i don't have the neat little space to place it.

Yeah thats the one. I was shocked at the price! Right now it's using 4aaa's. I already stripped the USB cable and will wire it up soon. The cables in the box are strapped up nice and tight so I'll have to cut a few zip ties. It's velcroed to the inside. It came with a ipod clamp on the front. I'm going to modify that to hold the speakers in a little better. I just got a good deal on a psp from a member here so I'll be putting that in the box and connecting it to the speakers.

FYI, I got speakers that look exactly the same from Bed Bath and Beyond for $5 a couple months ago. You can apparently still get them for $10: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=109684

I use mine for my MP3 player (not an iPod) and my laptop (when using the Core).

Hmm it could be that its wired backwards which can happen. Could also be that you could be on the wrong voltage feed(12v instead of 5v) or vice versa.

@hobbycar-yeah I though it was a great deal for here considering both ebay and *******o.uk have them listed for $10 and $5-$10 shipped.

i tired the wires both ways and got the same result.
all the wires are color coded for voltage, i used the same 12v line that charges my gws charger

It could also be a short. Make sure the wires aren't touching where you soldered them together. It's a really tight fit on the solder side of the plug. I had the same problem and I think the +12 and GND must be touching at some point. If I jiggle the plug it will cut out.

This was for the chargers right? Hmmm well I'm not sure. I don't think it could be under rated but I guess it could be. You're only running fans though????? Can you draw up a wiring diagram of what you've done? You should get a meter to measure the voltage to make sure it's what you think it is.

i just got my speakers in! did you finish rigging the usb adapter to your 5v lead?

i assume all i have to do is strip the sheath to find out what wires are what

i actually just plugged them into my laptop and the sound is surprising good for such cheap and small speakers. plenty loud for a pitbox. :)

Yeah I just clipped the USB end off and stripped it back. I connected it to a 5v lead. The speakers are on all the time so when the box is turned on the speakers are on.

i decided to leave the stock plug alone incase i need to use it with my laptop at some point in the future.

i used a spare epoch jack and soldered on some lines with quick disconnects and plugged it into my 5v lines from my psu and it works great!

fyi, i ran the + to the center and - to the outside leads on the jack

Yeah that sounds right ;). Glad you got it running. For the 12 hour race I just never got a chance to use it. Way too busy for only 3 drivers and 2 pit crew/gofers/support.
