View Full Version : ALS Charity Race at NCRC Racing

Hello,

Wanted to introduce our club to everyone.

We are a solid group of drivers from all backgrounds that race here at work for "team building." Our company has been gracious enough to support this annual winter series since 2003. Employees have come and gone but we have maintained a healthy involvement. We are currently closed to the public but if you like Mini-Z racing you should check out the website (www.ncrcracing.com). We have weekly race reports and end of season videos. Please feel free to email me with any feedback since I am also the webmaster.

We started out with only XMODs and now are at the point where some are racing mod AWD. We race on RCP track and use the CoreSpeed system, both very cool.

Arch2b was nice enough to start this forum so we could play up an OPEN TO THE PUBLIC RACE this October 20th. It is a charity race for ALS and we already have a great list of items to give away as well as our trademark gear shift trophies.

We'll be updating our front page soon with detials, but please mark the date.

It would kind of make sense to post a city and state. The website doesn't give one either. Good to have a charity but no one knows where it's at except the club members LOL!

Welcome to the forums! Looks like the start to a great club.

When you get them, post them up here as well.

I didn't mean to call you out but I searched the whole website with no obvious mention of location.

Well the only thing would be the location located under your avatar but a track location would be nice.

We'll make sure to add location for the future.

Other than that what do you think of the website?

Hello everyone,

I wanted to let everyone who is interested that we will be updating our website (www.ncrcracing.com) in the next couple of days. Details for the charity race and registration form will be there.

In addition to that we will also be dropping off registration forms at local hobby shops in the Baltimore/DC area over the weekend and some RadioShacks in Howard and Arundel counties (local) for those XMOD drivers.

Should you have any questions you can post them here or email me directly.

More sponsors are pooring in (e.g. Kyosho and RC Car Action are the latest):D

Hope to see your entry and we are looking forward to a great event.

Sorry for the late reply. I think the site is a great local site for sure. The forum is full of good resources but individual club sites are always a plus for locals.

Keep up the good work!

Kris,

Thanks for the feedback. I don't suppose you'll be making it out for the race?

The website is finally updated. Contains all the basics (categories, times, etc) and details on our last season in the Results section.

Hope to see everyone there and looking forward to giving some lucky driver an autographed Cal Ripken Jr. jersey.

Cheers!

Mmmmm... food pending!

I'm sure we're gonna make it down to this one, just gotta find out how many of my crew can make it. Sounds like some awesome fun for a great cause!

Yes. Food pending.

We are hoping for free meals for each driver but at the least we should be able to have something on site for a good price. Rely on something a little better than hot dogs and soda.

EVERYONE:
Some questions from others...

1. Foam tires are allowed for ALL categories. Just no traction compound. I find that the Gandini tires work great on this surface. As for tire selection, if you don't have RCP experience then I would bring plenty of tires and springs. The track has a moderate amount of traction but I would say still less than carpet.

2. 1/18 Stock is: 5 cells and a 180 motor

PLEASE pre-register if you can. We are concerned that we will fill up becuase we only have space for about ~70 dirvers but if it looks like more are going to show up then we can change things around and find more pit space.

Thanks,
NCRC

:) Looks like we will have a 1/18th scale category. Plenty of interest from the local crew. :)

F1 is still unknown - no pre-registers yet.

Going to the 301 1/10th race and will hopefully plug our race more there.

Spectators will be welcome and will be eligible for premium raffle prizes with purhcase of tickets. Pre-registered drivers will get a a RC raffle prize ticket for each car entry and a single premium raffle prize ticket. Race day entries get only RC raffle prize tickets unless they buy additiaonl raffle tickets for premium prizes (e.g. autographed items and RTR kits).

Things are shaping up and looking good.

Hope to see you all there. Don't forget to pre-register to get your t-shirt and premium raffle prize ticket.

Salud!

hey guys.....
for the stock class you say 50t motors....
Im a not a motor specialist yet so I need some help.
What motors are 50 turns?
I have speedy 05 and speedy 07 hop up motors.....
thanx....

ncrcracing

Berm,

Both Speedys will work but I would suggest you go with the 07 for obvious reasons.

Ones that will be legal:
Speedy 05
Speedy 07
MiniZ XSpeed
MiniZ Stock
Atomic Stock (incl R)
Atomic Std Grade
HFAY Stock

AWD and F1 equivalents for those cats.

If it isn't on this list and you think it should be let me know and I will check it out.

OTHERS:
I know a number of you showed interest in running F1 but I wanted to remind everyone that we need 6 PRE-REGISTERED in order to get the class in the line up.

The 1/18 guys have stepped up so there will be some racing with the "bigger" cars.

Arch,

You'll be the first :( . I haven't recieved a single F1 entry yet. You can go ahead and send it in with the F1 registration as a second car and we can either refund your money or give you extra raffle tickets if no others show.

I thought the rest of your crew were going to race F1? If that is the case that should give us 6 right?

my crew loves f1 but as with any other small group, it's not always easy to convince a majority of them to commit to the drive (most of them are in va) and costs associated with travling to events. i ask every time i see them so i still have hope more of them will sign up. i know kenotap has already said he is going. i'll have to ask him if he signed up for f1.
i'd be surprised if none of the dorks on wheels crew sign up for f1 as well. it's always a tuff race in f1 between our clubs and we always enjoy it.

Cool. Didn't realize there was such a rivalry. Maybe we should get in the mix more often. Can't say that we will be ultra competitive but we can certinaly get in the way :D

With that said we will plan on the F1 be a cat (e.g. we'll get the trophies).

I'm looking forward to seeing you guys race. Most of us will only be racing MiniZ Stock or Mod with Reggie B. racing AWD Mod.

I am happy to see that some of you are bringing your son's. There will be other kids racing as well.

Here you go drivers. Attached is the prelminary layout for next month's charity race.

This is a basic representation and we can already tell you that some sections will have sweepers rather than 90deg turns depicted. We will also be adding the bump outs for certain side rails where appropriate.

Any questions please get in touch.

The entries are now pouring in and it looks like we will have a great race.

Arch2b,

The only core transponders we have are the business card size. You are welcome to bring the F1 versions but I am not 100% sure if they will work with our system. We have one of the first few (beta systems).

We have 100 transponders so I think we are set, but please bring along your extras just in case.

What do you do if you don't have the smaller F1 tag? Do you tape it to the bottom of the chassis? If that is the case then we will make sure we have plenty of scotch tape available.

arch2b
2007.09.19, 11:56 AM
there are a couple options that include taping to the bottom of the chassis however i just stuff it into the rear spoiler and let it overhang toward the drivers head if that makes sense. others tape it to the slender portion of the front nose and let if flap over the driver. neither is pretty to look at but... the trouble with taping it to the bottom of the chassis is changing the batteries. if someone can post examples of how to do it nicely i would be very willing to give it a try myself.

for the cars, we simply velcro the tags to the underside of the front hood. i only used velcro to make it easier to taker them out and swap to other bodies quickly. if your interested, i have a full box of velcro strip in a roll.

Arch2b,
Sorry, but it'll be ugly then. :(

The velcro option sounds good. Thanks for the offer, but we have a roll of velcro here if people want to go that route. Since we are holding the event at our work we have quite a bit at our disposal so if anyone comes up with a clever way of holding them to a F1 then we can make it happen.

BTW, I just received your entry today. Thank you. :)

Since I started running the mini-z's, I've only run rubber tires but I could be "convienced" to try foams if it will be absolutely necessary :)

I would have to endorse the GRP tires (for MR-02). I run soft 8.5mm up front and medium 11.5mm in the rear. What I like the most is that they are consistent through their lives on the car and seem to be lasting forever on RCP tracks.

GRP is a sponsor and you will have your chance in winning some tires.

Cool :) I was asking because I was thinking about ordering some of GQ's foams (since I run for them ;) )

BUt I'm digging the rubber tires I've been running - I honestly hate running foams and wish ALL R/C would go to rubber tires on, well except MAYBE nitro TC and 8th on-road :)

I just purchase the core system about a month ago. To be honest I'm not sure if it's a beta or not. But I can bring it and you are welcome to try it out if you want. I'd like to try the small F1 transponders with it.

Also I'm not sure how you are setting up the loop under the track but I've been finding the wider the better. I have the Business card size and 1/2 business card size transponders and with them I get best results if I tape the loop to the bottom of the track in the widest rectangle you can make.

imxlr8ed

The main reason we run just one transponder at our big events is for race management reasons only. It's just easier to have one transponder per driver when sorting heats and mains. Our F1 transponders work perfectly with our Core. If you plan to run them at the event, and have a separate transponder for each car entered... you might want to re-write each transponder to include the type of car included in the name. It'll make it easier to populate the heats then. (but like I said... one transponder per driver is the easiest way to avoid any issues.)

Larry,

1. We are still working on getting the food here at the race for free, but not confirmed. The fall back plan isn't bad either. Some places (Atlanta Bread Co, Calif Tortilla, a pizza place, a basic deli, Cheeseburger Cheeseburger) are walking distance away with all the rest like McDonalds, Wendys, ChikFilA etc less than 15 minutes out and back.

2. If you don't run foams already then I wouldn't buy them just for this event unless you want to take the opprotunity to experiment. Both are equally competitive when you stay off the walls and away from other cars! :D

Thanks,
NCRC

I prefer rubber also but getting the GRP foams premounted and lasting forever is what I like for the MiniZ. But my 1/10th - rubber only. BTW does anyone know if The Track will be running rubber this winter or is Mimi sticking with foam?

As far as the rubber compounds that work best: The 10deg and 8deg seem most popular but they don't last long and given certain layouts may be a little slower. With the layout we have planned for the event I would suggest 10deg on the front and something a little harder in the rear depending upon your setup and driving style.

PLEASE REMEMBER. NO TRACTION COMPOUND. So take this into account when choosing tire types.

Only one F1 entry as of yesterday afternoon, but I was out of the office today so more may have come in. Given the blogs we are planning on having the F1 race, but if only 5 show up race day then we will either refund the money or give you extra raffle tickets in exchange. The initial plan was to use a different transponder for each car so your tip on labeling with name and car is smart. We'll do that if that is the final route. Once we start setting the heats with pre-regs we may change to plan B (one transponder per driver).

Anyone using a smaller F1 transponder is welcome to bring it and we can test it out first thing to see if they work with our older system.

Arch,

You're right. 10deg/20deg is a common setup with our drivers here but a couple are shifting down one to 8deg/10deg. They happen to be the faster drivers but I can't say that the softer tires are the reason why they are winning.

IMPORTANT: We will be running the track with the rough side UP. We have in the past run smooth side up when we changed the layout in our winter series to mess with everyone (challange them) ;) . We figured that the rough side UP is design intent and most common so that is what we are running.

Russ - any updates on the entry counts??

Thanks!!
With pre-reg now closed here are the latest tallys…

MiniZ Stock – 12
MiniZ Mod – 5 ( a couple more planned race day)
MiniZ AWD Mod – 3 (we said we would race it and we will)
MiniZ F1 – 5
Xmod Stock – 7
1/18th Stock – 9 (with another 3-4 estimated race day)

So we are planning on 9-10 heats. 60min per round (if running smoothly) means we would be starting the Mains around 3pm, giving the guys driving in a reasonable drive back home. Unless tons more show up race day I think we will be in good shape. Not too big of a race for our first go around.

Test run went well. No problems with 1/18th scale cars and I would wager that the MiniZ Mods will have faster laps than the 5cell M18s. I ran a 1/18th around the track and we decided to open it up to 3 tiles wide for most of the track. I’ll post a picture tomorrow on all the blogs.

Thanks to everyone for participating and we are looking forward to seeing everyone there.

Don’t forget that extra raffle tickets will be available for the premium items at $5 each or 5 for $20.

Food is looking positive. I’ll confirm as soon as we know.

Hello everyone!

A question about the 1/18th scale came across RCTech and I wanted to post it here just in case some of you are running 1/18th scale next Saturday.

The HobbyZone Mini Mauler 180 motor is legal.

Russ - what time is the cut-offs for sign-ups?

There will be enough F1s for sure. There are already 6 pre-registered. Seems like we are still a little scarce for the AWD class :( . 2 guys backed out from our club so now we have only 1 in the AWD category pre-registered. If we have 4 in AWD we will race, but if we only still have the 1 then I would have to say we will skip it.

You'll have your F1 race! :)

AWSOME :) i cant' thank you enough for putting together a great day of racing for a great cause!

i posted most of my comments to our club thread but i wanted to tell you i was very happy to have been able to attend and wanted to express my many thanks for a very good day of fun.

i certainly hope you make this an annual event and i will do my best to encourage even more to attend. i think as people see pictures and read replies, they will see they missed an excellent opportunity to help ncrc with thier charity work for ALS, meet friends and make new ones and simply enjoy a good day of racing fun.

thanks to green turtle also for providing a delicious lunch!

note to self: buy more raffle tickets next time :p

This race was an awesome event, I had a blast and managed to do pretty well.. K bojar, it was nice racing with you, that Ferrari 575 was looking good with the tribal flames on it.. It was nice to finally get to meet in person with a lot of people I talk to on this site.. The raffle was stocked with some very nice prizes, and I was lucky to walk away with some.. There was also a lot of people at this event, making for exciting racing.. I'd like to thank everybody involved with making this race happen.. The track layout was huge and the design had a really good flow to it.. Hopefully the money we donated today will help to find a cure for ALS...

Ditto here. You guys did an excellent job all around. Great racing and top of the line prizes. I think you would be happy with a big turn out like this one. My son and i will also do our best to make the event if it becomes an annual event. Nice facility also. Good to meet with some of my rc friends from before and new ones from this site. Hope to see lots of pictures. Hope the charrity end of things went like you hoped. Good luck and hope to see you next year.

It was nice meeting you as well...As nice as that body looked, I can't take ANY of the credit for the paint - Davey G did all that, I only added some sponsor decals and threw a chassis under it :o  I think the 575GTC is my favorite body available - however, the enzo is growing on me ;)

I just wish I would have taped the body on sooner, it might have helped me qualify better :D

I love running the Ferrari 575 as well, I got one of Arch2b's old beater 575's for free and I ran it for a while, It's a nice and stable body, but it does tend to pop-off easily during a crash.. Whenever I run that body I wrap tape around it to prevent it from coming off.. I do that to all my race bodies, which can make them look not so good.. I hated wrapping tape around my Calsonic 350Z at the charity race, but the last thing you wanna do when you're racing is have a body fly off...

Excellent event! NCRC really went all out for this... a great cause, with great people behind it! All of the NCRC crew have my appreciation, you guys put on a great show! Everything ran smoothly, and all of us here up in PA will eagerly await the next event. Hopefully this will become another strong front in the battle against ALS, and I'm sure all who participated will be there when you call on us again!

I strongly urge all area RC enthusiasts to attend if NCRC ever holds this event again... It was just that great! :D

Everyone,

We cannot thank you all enough for coming to the event. It was some tight racing, tasty food, great prizes, and an all around good time for a good cause. We will be doing it again next year for sure.

We hope everyone had a good time and next time we will make sure everyone walks away with more goodies.

All in all we raised $2392 for ALS. Good job drivers, your support will be well recived by ALSA!!

We appreciated everyone's patience given this was our first major event. Our goal was to raise $2000 and host 40 drivers and we did just that. Thank you for all of your generosity.

A special thanks to our team members Gary Stephenson, Al Romack, Bryan Fung, Frank Adams and Chris Dimeler, without whom the race would NOT have gone as smoothly as it did.

I have some travel plans this week so I won't be able to update the webpage with the race report unitl next weekend. I'll make another post to let everyone know.

We may also be holding another one day event (non-charity) similar to this if everyone is interested.

Have a great week!

Russ

I hear that - I was VERY hesitent to wrap tape around the body (I ALSO hate the way it makes them look), but hey, it help in the B-Main considering the 2 qualifiers I had multiple pitstops because of the body popping off...I think it I would have done that sooner, I might not had to drive my way into the "A" :D

I now own 4 GTC bodies :) the one Davey G did, the red & white GTC one, and 2 unpainted white ones :) (which will probably go to Davey for some more paint)

I love tht Calsonic body, am thinking about adding one of them to my growing collection ;)

I can only remember some of the bigger items. So many small things that it was like handing out candy.

Autographed F1 print - A. Santamarina (spectator)
Cal Ripken Jersey - L. Frey
Nitro Half8 - A. Delvantius (spectator)
EC Half8 - R. Barnes
Autographed Helmets - B. Lucas Jr., R. Arnold (spectator), R. McRae
NASCAR MiniZ RTR - M. Lombardo (spectator)
MiniZ Chassis (2) - J. Ceci, D. Brown
DTM MiniZ RTR - A. Romack

Those are only the ones that come quickly to mind. I was glad to see a good mix of racers and spectators win, but one name was missing, MINE!

Yeah, sorry. I dumped a huge amount on tickets (good cuase) but I was hoping to at least walk away with another chassis or some tires :(

We will have a slightly different format for the prizes next year. You can buy tickets and then allocate them towards specific prizes (or just one prize) that you really want to win.

Hey everyone,

It has been some time and we are ramping up our group again to start planning this year's ALS charity race.

As always we are holding it during ALS Awareness Month - October.

We have tentatively picked :)Saturday October 11th.:)

Same categories as before. Same tight competition, and same awesome prizes!!!!

I'll post more information in a separate forum for the 2008 ALS Charity Race.

There may be a change of venue but I can assure you it will be just as awesome.

Hope to see you all there.
