hi, I was thinking of getting a mini-z since my local hobby store has a small track after it moved to a larger shop, and since you guys are only about 20 mins away from me it's convenient for me if i want to race and such. I was wondering if there was any rulesets that are followed for racing. thanks

Hi Ping,

Welcome to MHS discussion.

Basically we make it so that all can race at MHS and we separate the classes according to what is brought to the track.

Give us a call or stop buy one day you will love the track. NASCAR has become a big hit and we just changed the track lay out for on-road course this week.

Hope to see you soon.

Hi, my name is San and a member of Team Champion. I'm actually new to the RC scene (about 5 months). I primarily race 1/8 truggies and waiting for Maj to finish the 1/18 track to run my XRay M18 for the 1st time.

I would like to thank Maj for his hospitality and support. Our group was invited to the store to take a look at the new 1/18 track (work in progress) and witness the Mini-Z craze. To make a long story short, one of our members bought (on the spot) and competed in the Mini-Z Nascar class. Maj and Leo were extremely supportive and after a few qualifiers, he actually made the A Main.

Again, it was a great experience and we hope to become regulars.

P.S. Maj, my son thanks you for allowing him to use his laptop in the store. ;-)

I have to say I was VERY impressed with AJ's ability on the first night out on the track. I was telling Maj that in a few more races he will be one that we have to battle with for that A main spot im sure.

Looking forward to see you all soon.

Hey Tbolt,

Yes we are open saturdays.

At the moment we race Saturday nights as well. We may be changing our Saturday racing to the mornings instead.

We have tons of people from out of town who are itching to race at MHS on a regular basis but the evening makes it harder for them.

Stay tuned and we will keep you posted.

Have a great weekend!

Hello Friends,

Update for those of you who could not make it out to MHS for saturday night racing because of the weather and holiday shopping.

**************
Update 1

NASCAR is huge! Who would have thought that it would be so much fun and popular in this neck of the woods.

Another group of people joined us last weekend and it seems that its continuing to becomeg one of the most popular classes along with the onroad racing class at MHS.

********
Update 2

We are considering changing Saturday night racing from the evening to the morning. We have many people from out of town who have been emailing and calling us about racing but the evening races seem to make it harder for them to come out and enjoy the races here at MHS.

********

Update 3

We have a ton of guys with F1's who want to race them but people keep forgetting to do so. For those of you who own them start bringing them and we will get that class going. they are ton of fun and look so cool on the track.

*********

See you all soon and thanks for all the support!

Saturday mornings would be tough for me as well at least for the time being. Perhaps a trial run of early hours so that the people who want to race at Maj's who live far can try it out but, if they decide they don't want to be regulars nothing is set in stone. I'd vote for just starting earlier Saturday afternoon.

T-Bolt
2007.12.18, 12:09 PM
What about starting it in the afternoon, like at 2:00 or so? We wouldn't be there until very late, and whatever obligations that people have in the morning will hopefully be done by then.

Hi Everyone

Intersting, thats what I thought 015 chassis, rear motor mount, Porsche 934 or 935 body, however, I thought it was stock electronics (AM, No FETs, No AD Band) and any motor the stock electronics would take. But last time we ran most ran Speedy 05's BB's or Bushing version. I know I am looking at this post a little late, but does this mean we can run a speedy 07 in this class? I would actually prefer to run a speedy 07 in this class:D. Anyone else?

we are running such class. Limitations are:
- Body that doesn't fit MR02
- Box stock motor
- Box stock electronics (either 3004 or 3010)
This class is a lot of fun and even with the stock motor number of laps in this class is similar to the MR02 class

We wanted to know from you how many of you would prefer racing this Wednesday instead of Thursday night. I know many wives want to kill many husbands for spending time with their hobby, so we will avoid all of you getting killed and move it to tomorrow night Wednesday if there is a big request.

RC the track only has a hand full of track layouts than can be made do to the half banked straight. I think you raced them all. so even we might or might not change it the regulars still have the edge.:);)

Hey Slubben
here is the damper I was telling you about.
http://store.hkshobby.com/product_info.php?cPath=23_75_34_153_182&products_id=1918 Maj might have it in stock......
Look at how it puts the damper under the chassis so you have clearance for your cobra....

Berm,
That damper will only run 94mm RM setups. The Cobra is 90mm. Unless you use the Atomic 90mm RM motormount, which should allow it to work...

I never had any luck with that damper. The location of the damper is too close to the pivot point (t-plate), and doesnt dampen enough. I had much better results with the 3Racing damper, or a modified 94mm damper setup; making a hole on top of the cobra. For me, performance first, looks second :P

The damper looks nice, but I never had it work well.

Hey kev

I ended up getting just about everything for my AWD ;) Including the SAS for the rear-end

Here is what Davey G recommended to me:

The AWD takes a decent amount of work to get them going well. The AWD class on weekly club races is open. The necessities for AWD are aluminum steering and rear hubs 2 degrees, a complete set of lowering springs, metal universals (stock ones are plastic) and of course a good body. Tires just like on thne MR02 is crucial. I ran 18 rears and 25fts on my AWD and it was pretty good. Similar durometer front to back just like a 10th scale TC is the way to go.

Other than that - the plastic Atomic diffs are very good, better than the aluminum ones (since the plastic don't "chip" like the alumumin ones do - this M18 xray diffs with notches)

Kyosho makes different degree hubs, so you wouldn't need to get aluminum ones - but if you got the extra $$, might as well get them :)

a motor is a big "wakeup" for the car :) I just wanna do the FET upgrades since the AWD class is "open" at Al's, so that would help me hang a little better - not that I need a lot, since the "slower" cars hang just as well as the fast ones since they are easier to control ;)

Hi George

Get the lowest and widdest body you can. If 98mm the Enzo, the Ford GT (with front airdam of course and can make one for you), Lambo Mucielago (if you can find it), some really like the mclaren f1 i never tried it, its a bit narrow for my taste. If 94mm hmm not sure the widdest body you can :)

For upgrades:
First dont go crazy and buy all metal parts, to much weight.

1) Beside bearings
2) Wheel set pack it has all the off set you will ever need
3) Alum front and rear knukles (front 1.5 to 2 degrees rear 0 to 1degrees) plastic ones are better (lighter) but they break easily
4) Alum outdrives for the stock gear diffs if a must if you dont go with ball diff.
5) May want to consider a oneway bearing for the front they give alot more steering on and off power.
6) Start with the stock springs in back and play around with front springs tension preferrably harder then the rear. I have PN whites right now and Iam still playing around with it.
7) get lay down adapter for crystal to fit low bodys
8) get shims limit suspension travel specialy for the front to keep the rear wheels from getting to high of the ground during cornering also shims for the gear diffs to keep a nice mesh with the spure gear (spur and gear diff have a tendency to slip if you have the 98mm extension)
9) Tires front PN 20's, kyosho 30's (a little to much bite), Atomic 40's (tried them on my carpet seem good dont know for RCP yet it looks promising) for the Rear PN 8 or 10's, kyosho 20 (a little to much bite) Atomic 30's (tried them on my carpet seem good dont know for RCP yet it looks promising)
10) One degree toe in for rear
11) Alum Universal's

Note: Some preferre to have more camber in the rear then in the front, that set up did not work for me because the car keeps losing its back in on fast turns. Maybe with that set up the oneway is not needed. Well that one is up in the air for me still.

Good Luck George
and thanks again for the batteries

one more question...
are the front and rear hubs on the awd interchangable like in the m18???
thanks...

Cherub1m
2008.02.23, 02:01 PM
Hi George

Wow, I didn't include heat sink on the list, my bad. Heat sink is a must have.

Yes the hubs are interchangable. I have 3 racing hubs, front and rear upper diff cover and universals on my AWD (i like them), but for the heat sink i have the PN racing (pro alum motor heat sink) one its nice it has a small scoop that funnles air in to cool the motor. I never tried the 3 racing heat sink (they have some nice parts).

And yes i think Maj can run 3 classes and finish by 11:30pm at the latest. If they start right at 7:30pm latest 8:00pm, do 2 or 3 heats of mr02, 2 of mr015, 2 of AWD. With 3 to 5 min max between heats and rounds, 10-15min break/practice before mains. It can be done ladies and gents :)

Good Luck
Philip

Hi RC

If I am not mistaken the plan is to run what they are running at the upcoming Atomic race (F1 stock, 2wd mod, 4wd mod, 2wd stock). So Maj will probably run 2wd mod, AWD mod for sure if enough come for F1 stock and 2wd stock I am sure he will run it. I dont know if he will run 015 porshe class that day. Yesterday we ran 3 classes (2wd mod, AWD mod and 015 porshes) and we finished at 12am not 2am (thank God). All the classes were awsome and staff and other experience/sponsored racers were very open to sharing ideas on how to improve the performace of your car.

He is also in the back of the second video I posted. Those videos were taken after racing was finished. We were running the MR02s right after the Overland race :P

You can also see Maj on the left, and Alan Mok (Mr. HKS Hobby himself) on the right with the camera. I am pretty sure that the Corvette in the picture was Maj's car.

Berm, Its difficult for me, since I usually work on Thursday nights, and race at Action on Saturdays. I will try to make it out sometime soon, although it will probably be after the Atomic race.

I ran so horrible at the warm up race I was really ticked off at myself so I have decided to keep things simple. 2 wheel stock may not be a bad idea because I dont think a lot of people will be running it because of the tire rule but, hey if everyone has to run the same tire whats the big deal right? I have to play with the pot on my F1 it just doesnt go straight at all unless something else is tweaked Sai and Phillippe's F1s looked so cool going around the track though.

For the 2wd stock class are you guys running the hand out tires? If so, you're better off running a 94mm set-up. You'll need all the traction you can get on these rear tires. The front atm has a lot of traction. I was sponsored to race the shops car but if I were to set-up my own car for this race here's what I would do;

PN yellow springs w/ (1 each side) atm yellow shims for the front
ATM soft SSG H-plate
soft lower springs and top springs for the DPS
Stock TOE
3 degree camber for less steering (I know, it don't make sense but just try it)
+1 offset on the rear
0 should be fine

Make sure your car weighs 180 grams. I had to place a nickel on the PCB cover to add some weight...

Put a spoiler in the back or run a car with spoiler not because of the down force but because of the weight from the screw and spoiler. This will add some weight in the back and should help coming out of the corner.

The hand out motors comes with wires. If I'm not mistaken, you can remove them and install a better one like PN wires. Just make sure there's no binding on the suspension.

Run 94mm Mid mount.

The main idea is to have this car to "push" understeer. Due to this tire combination it is hard to have this car to hook on the turns. Most of us before the race that tried these tires spins out on every turn.

Although I did not use one, but if you can, warm up those rear tires before each race!

Dont do it!!! The LM motormount/differential is about 5mm wider than the standard MR02. The rear wheels on the LM are .5mm offset. I am running 3mm offset with a standard motormount and differential and it seems even. You will not be able to tuck in the wheels to the body, even using negative offsets.

An Enzo or Murcielago would make more sence. Even if you use a standard motormount at 102mm with the McLaren, there is barely any room with the short rear overhang, which means the rear wheels will have very little protection.

the only thing that i dont like is that i cant run fast motors while everybody is running a millon fets there fets add up to my motors and that 015 class is so not legal

Slubben

you can run a chili on the 2.4GHZ as far as the 015 class who knows what could happen with proper time to test and go through motors.

EMU
2008.03.10, 06:04 PM
RC, nobody runs aftermarket or stacked fets in the stock class. In AWD it is open, and you can use whatever fets or motor you want. After much discussion, we have finally reached a point where we can run the 2.4 cars in stock 2wd. None of the top drivers want to run them for any additional speed. We have more than enough speed with the motors and batteries that we are using. What we wanted more was smoother driving with less glitching. The faster that you make the car, the more difficult it will be to drive. I would love to open up the class as well, although I still wouldnt change the setup. I think it would actually slow down the class, and break a lot more cars if it were open. We used to run 2wd modified, and the results were almost allways less than stock. Which is why Al was trying to keep the 2.4 out of the stock class, thinking that the kids would buy them to get faster, but actually drive slower and cause many more accidents.

I have been running old Speedy 05's with stock 3010 fets on my MR02. I can increase the speed a little more going to the Speedy 07BB, but I feel that my speed is fine, although a little on the slow side. Im not the fastest car on the straight, but I had the best lap of the night on Saturday (7.45sec) with my 'slower' car.

What do you mean the 015 class is not legal? We are required to use stock electronics, with Kyosho box motors. I have won every race except one 015 race this points series (Roland defeated me last week when I decided to change the body and have some fun). The last race I attacked, and won 6 laps up on the field, and finished less than one lap behind my MR02 stock class 2nd place finish. I tied my fastest lap of the night with my 015 at 7.45sec. Philipe stopped by right before the race, and stayed to assist marshall. Afterwards he drove the car... and was VERY impressed. The car scrubs very little speed in the corners, and is very easy to drive, which is why it stays in the front.

Action RCs track is all about corner speed. If you come out of the corner fast, then you can gear it up a little and fly down the straights. There isnt as much rear traction as other tracks, so you cant get a lot of power down, so carrying the most speed out of the corner is key.

My 015 is very fast, passes many cars from the 02 class down the straights. But if the car is inspected it will pass. I am running a 9/41 gear setup, with Atomic TS wheels in the rear to give me a little more top end (while lowering the chassis by raising the rear axle on the Atomic motormount). It is geared quite high, but has very little low end acceleration, however, the stock motors have good top end. If the track were more technical, with less high speed demand, it wouldnt fare as well.

As far as motors, I dont really hand pick my 015 class motors. I just run them... I have yet to come across a motor that is truly slow. It may take a little while to find the right gearing for the cars... I am running what is almost equivalent to a 10t pinion on the stock spur. This weekend I am going to be running a Mugen Odyssey, with the motor that came with the chassis. I didnt even brake it in... I use comm drops, and oil the bushings regularly. Speed is not really the issue with 015, being able to corner with the speed is. It has taken me quite some time to get my main 015 setup to where it is, that I can take the corners hard, and can never flip the car on my own, but still have enough steering to carry alot of speed through the corners.

PN 9t Pro Match pinion

I am sure that there are many others that think I am cheating. Just remember, 86mm RM cars at high speed, cannot handle the corners as well as a 94mm MM car. Also if you guys are running less than a 9t pinion, you will look slow on the track. The above setup should run well on many 94mm bodies. I ran it with the Altezza, VW R32, 350Z... and it handles well with all of them, although best with the 350Z. I have only lost once with the setup, against Roland... and has switched his to a very similar setup with an R32 Skyline.

I would never think you cheat or pretty much any of the racers I have met.
I believe all of you guys got your speed from practice and tuning tricks....
I was taught by a National ranked 1/18 scale racer that slow is fast....
You said it best getting around the track without losing speed....
That comes by first not hitting rails other racers etc...next by learning proper cornering technique...most of that comes from laps...lots and lots of laps...
I know I am putting in my time and I am slowly getting better each week even if it is only by one lap.....
The new 2.4 cars are amazing they are less twitchy and maybe because you dont have to fear the dreaded glitch you can concentrate on driving more...
