CristianTabush
2008.01.06, 06:46 PM
I am afraid that it will just be a spin out fest. the 40's have a lot of front grip, but those 30 rears! WOW! like driving on oil..... Good thing we had a "rain race" last series at the track. I'll find a way to make the car just push and not do anything else but push... hehehe

Edit: One more serious thing. Keep an eye on the weather forecast for the Bay Area and dress accordingly. We're getting some crazy wind and rain, wouldn't want anybody to turn into a popsicle before they take their frozen Z out of the bag. ;)

That's silly. I don't see why Atomic doesn't open it up to allow any Atomic tire. While other Atomic compounds are not necessarily competitive on RCP, at least they are driveable.

Z408 - I know you're just stuck in the middle of this. Not directing any of this at you.

CristianTabush
2008.01.08, 01:30 PM
Was this due to the tires Phil? I do agree that it is silly to attempt to run a tire that sucks, but I guess it will take a bit more tweaking to get it to be driveable and everyone will have to do it the same. It is sad that Atomic can be so narrow minded just because they use handout tires in Hong Kong and Taiwan on predominantly carpet surfaces (where the tires are great). I will try to make the best of it...

Great job Willy! Way to go representing the east coast.

Christian awesome job as always.

Do you guys have the lap results? I would love to see if the awd was faster then the 2wd.

Hey Bill, see those results yet?

Looks like the two class was evenly matched. Seems C. Tabush have a faster 2WD mod car

Hi peter,

Ya Christian is always super fast and good. I wonder what his take will be with his AWD. I know he hasn't been too happy with his in mod lately. Yours in Toronto has been the best AWD i have seen in a long time. I'm wondering with the tire restrictions if that played a part in the atomic race.

The reason i'm looking at results between the 2 types of cars was some places are thinking of combining the classes. So stock would be AWD/2wd and mod would be the same. Even though the results are close i feel that they should be different classes because they do drive much different. (Lets not fill this thread with the Pro and cons with this though. We should make another thread.)

Christian, are you not part of At@micmods anymore?

Hi guys, just got back to LA to Ruf's house. We had a blast at the race. The competition level was really intense and the people were awesome.

The race was very challenging as the track conditions changed tremendously throughout the day. In qualifying my AWD was unstoppable, I TQ'd by a lap and was the only person capable of turning 48 laps in quals. As for my 2wd, it sucked! I was only able to run 1 of the 2 quals and ended up 4th overall. It had zero traction.

When the mains came around, the 2wd was superb! I had by far the best car in the mains, but starting from 4th on the grid was a challenge to move up. Especially getting around Leo Z who ran really clean in every main. I had to bust my tail to get around him every main and was not able to do it in the second one after attacking most of the race.

AWD was a different story. As the track got colder, it generated more grip and started chattering really bad. I think this was due to the 94mm wheelbase. This is the second event I attend with one and both times have been miserable. Willy's car was so much faster in the sweeper, where if I tried to apply any throttle my car would chatter badly and spin out. Once he got around me in the third main, I told him it was his as it was just too hard to stay in front of him without the car having a cow.

I really have to start paying attention to AWD Set-up. I have tons of development on my MR-02 and just threw a car together for the AWD race. The MR-02 is going on the shelf and I will start development of my AWD once again...

Anyways, great job to inside line and atomic on a great race. We had a blast. I will write an article and post pictures, set-ups and results up on Reflex's site by the end of the week, so stayed tuned!

No, Bill I am no longer with AtomicMods. Many reasons took place in this decision, which I rather not go into detail, but it was essentially a difference in ideology. Rob is a great businessman but many times we did not see eye to eye and I was no longer happy there.

Ruf offered me to once again join ReflexRacing and I honestly like his way of doing business a lot better, so after some thinking I decided to get back to where I started. I can honestly say racing is once again fun and exciting for me.

I see many great things coming from Reflex in the future. We have a great team and intend to attend many events this year. We also will be into manufacturing and designing a lot of new and innovative parts for Mini-Z, so keep checking in with us on the progress. April is our goal for our first batch of parts. Amongst these will be a new and improved AWD suspension and geometry. ;)

BTW, ready to launch by the end of the week will be our cold weather super soft grooved rear tires. Prepare to have your MR-02 drive like nothing else ever before!

Cristian

Willy's AWD actually belongs to me. He didn't change any setup except for tires. I never have any chatter with that car either on carpet or RCP. What is your rear end setup?

CristianTabush
2008.01.13, 10:40 PM
I ran 2 different cars. Both Ruf's and my own. At 94mm and they both stunk. hehehe. We actually tried a lot of different things, but no success. I honestly think it was the wheelbase. I was running an almost identical set-up as Willy's as far as springs went, with the exception of wheelbase. I tried gear diffs, ball diffs, different rear ends, springs, tires and no success. The best looking cars were 98mm. I have had success with this and nothing with 94's. I am almost entirely convinced that 98 is better once again. I just tried 94 because I've seen people have success with it before.

Try using the stock or PN rear end in case you are using the SAS.

Are you still based in Texas?

Christian,

I'm glad racing is fun again for you and I'm sure you guys will come up with some great new products. I can't wait to try the tires on my 02. It needs tons of rear traction.

wcrotty
2008.01.13, 11:11 PM
Sai,

What rear tires do you run? I think it has to do with to much rear and front bite. In Toronto when the traction was limited my AWD was great. But when the traction came in the car chattered. I didn't adjust and try tires with less bite.

I think the AWD needs dampening and lots of it.

CristianTabush

Sai, yes I am still in Texas. I did try the SAS and the PN rear end. Tried different springs and tires. I honestly think it was the wheelbase that made the biggest difference with the Atomic 40 fronts, I had to run a fairly soft tire in the rear and that threw the balance of the car off. Perhaps with a tire with less grip in the front I might have been able to run a harder tire in the rear and gotten the car to chatter less.

Came by for a short while before going out to dinner... I had the pleasure of watching some great racing, learning faces and exchanging a few words with Christian. Who is, btw, an immensely careful driver. I really had to see it to appreciate how effective just being careful can be. Thanks for that. ;)I'm sorry I missed you! I would've liked to get a peek at the MR-CG. I was a little busy cleaning up a little spill in my pit, but I think the coffee made my F1 even faster! :p

For those that couldn't make it, this was a great event. A lot of really good people with great attitudes to race with and the level of competition at the top was definitely high. You can see how close the racing was in the videos posted by HKSHOBBY. On top of that, Binh and his crew hosted an incredibly organized race which is refreshing. Inside Line Racing definitely provides one of the best racing atmospheres for pros and beginners alike.

On our part, we were chasing traction all day long as is normal at a large event. The temperature changes were challenging, but we were able to hook up the F1 and 2WD mod cars pretty good. The AWD didn't respond well as the traction came up, and the 2WD stock was pretty much a lost cause for us with the handout tires. I didn't even mess with setup on the 2WD stock car since I really wanted to focus on understanding the F1.

BTW, Z408's latest F1 bumper looks pretty darned good. I can't wait to get a sample to try out.

First off I would like to thank all the racers that participated and made the trip out to race with us. I would also like to thank Atomic for hosting a great race event. All racers were given T-shirts and prizes, which is a very nice touch. The prizes ranged from car stands to their new 27 Mhz Board.

2WD Stock
This class was the most difficult to race. With the spec tires it was very hard to get your car set-up. Hands down TJ had the best car in this class. I don't know who tuned his car, but ask anyone at the track, this thing was dialed. TJ ended up TQ'ing this class and winning the first two A-mains and did not race the final main. TJ posted a very fast time of 10.16 in the quals and did 44 laps in 8:05 minutes. The other racers in the class seem to have the most trouble dealing with the spec tires. This class was certainly all about set-up.

F1 Stock
Joe aka Ruf consistently put down the fastest laps. For myself, I could not get a set of decent batteries. If you race with us much, you will know that my brother Steven always gets the best batteries. I managed to get a decent set in the second main and barely won that main. In the end Ruf was just to fast. Ruf, I will get you next time.........

AWD Mod
During practice, Stephen aka phea was consistently putting down the fast laps. Put once the quals started he could not put it together. After the first round of qualifying, Willy Wong held the TQ position. Once Cristian jumped back on for round two he took back that spot with 48 laps, which is the fast of the night. When Willy came back out he was posed to take it back, but during the last minutes of the heat he could not keep up his pace. The fastest laps of the night was done by phea, 9.63 and 9.64. Steven, my little brother also manged to drop a 9.69.

In the first main, Cristian edged out a victory over Willy by 1.25 seconds. In the second main, Willy edged out a victory over Cristian by 0.76 seconds. In the last main the field was very tight for 7 minutes, positions 1 thru 4 were on the same lap. Willy managed to win the last main and the trip to Hong Kong.

2WD Mod
In practice and qualifying, TJ was able to put down the fastest laps and ended up TQ'ing. However during the mains he could not put it together. TJ was not able to get one hole shot and always had to battle from the back of the pack. Leo nearly held the TQ postition but a few crashes at the end of his heat gave the spot to TJ.

In the first main Cristian managed to battle his way from fourth to take the victory. In the second main, Leo got the hole shot and did not look back.
The last main was a true battle with Leo and Cristian trading the top position a few times. Leo had one too many crashes that lead to Cristian winning the last main and the trip to Hong Kong.

Fastest lap in this class was set by Cristian with a 9.73. TJ was able to drop a few 9.80s. And Leo was able to drop a 9.81. Leo was not about speed, he is about smooth.

Congrats to all the winners. Inside Line Racing hopes that everyone had a great time. Can't wait for the next one.

All three of you are great drivers. It was fun watching and running with you guys. Wish I put up more of a fight for you Tjay... Next time! :)

Binh - I'll look forward to it! It's good to run up against some well set up F1's. The F1 class has always been about the gentleman driver, and it was great to meet a fellow enthusiast. :D

Definitely need to run it again in the stock class Joe. The car that I was running was hooked up thanks to Binh. I too want to run the F1 class but the first F1 I drove felt like crap. Either that or I just can't drive an F1 :). Hands down to you and your F1. That thing is just hookin' up on our track. Usually the F1 is about 1 sec slower than our stock cars but your car is droppin' faster laps than the stock cars.

After racing with the fast guys last weekend I now know what else I need to improve on. 1st staying off the wall! 2nd the hole shot! Damn, I never knewhow important hole shot is... I didn't even know what TQ meant untill this weekend  I will be seeing you soon!

Laters!

Thanks for the compliment! Being an F1-specialist can be a blessing and a curse. It took me a little while to dial it in for that track and temperature. Most F1's handle AWFUL, and there is a lot of preparation and modification work that needs to happen before the chassis is raceworthy. That's the only reason I'm competitive in that class. :D
