A while back i was using some electric cleaner on my xmod evo pot, but the stuff made the pastic very brittle, and when i put batteries in, they popped through the plastic walls of the battery tray! so i took an old battery tray, and soldered it on. my car worked fine, but then, when it was off, i heard it sizzle. Then i tried the car, and the range was about 5 feet. [fried resistors im thinking]. but then i opened up the car to find my board like so:

i looked at the green things [resistors, right?] but they dont look fried, so maybe its that weird tower with the wax-like stuff on top.

heres a pic of a board with good range [can't use it though, its steering is fried]:
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk268/bmxtrev/IMG_0633.jpgApparently, my newly soldered wire [that black one in the first picture] was too long, so when i pushed the tray in, the wire bent and touched the board.

I just need to find out what sizzled on my board so i can take it from my other one and replace it. Car works, just only up to five feet. Please help if you can, i really want to have a car for bashing around [Z body is just too beautiful...]

sorry for the bad pictures, im a noob...

Looks to me like you fried T1, it’s a small transformer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transformer), and even though it may be a little crispy there is the possibility that it could still work however L1 sitting next to it is a very delicate inductor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inductor) that is part of the same antenna tuning circuit and all it takes is a quick short to power and its a goner.

IMO your CB is toast and not worth trying to repair, you could swap it out with another Xmods Evo CB but why bother when you can upgrade to a Mini-Z CB? With everyone and their brother planning on upgrading their Z’s to 2.4GHz I suspect there will soon be hundreds if not thousands of old 27MHz Mini-Z CBs looking for a home.

Shoot speaking of X-Evo’s this Halloween even the Great Pumpkin will likely upgrade it's Mini-Z CB to a 2.4GHz for the annual midnight run.

so is that tower thing the problem?...
Refer to “T1” and “L1” printed on the circuit board the “tower thing” is T1 and the little green thing that looks like a resistor next to it is L1, that might help clarify what I said above.

… Is my board even possible to repair? …
Again refer to my above post, but sure it’s “possible” to repair it, especially with a little formal education and a few tools of the trade like an oscilloscope, oh yea and the value of the transformer or known good parts from another Evo CB. Is it “practical”? That’s the $50 question, and in my opinion as stated above no, even if you found a new T1 and possibly L1 and had the ability to replace them without damaging the circuit board further there is still no guarantee that something else is not damaged too.

… where are all of these people getting the 2.4GHhz upgrades for their 02s?
In the US by cannibalizing the CB from a MR-02 LM since they are not yet available from Kyosho America, however members in Japan and Europe etc. can/have simply purchased one from their favorite Kyosho dealer. I suspect by April or May if not sooner the shop here will have them.

You can also buy just the board here http://www.reflexracing.net/proddetail.asp?prod=rr24ghzboard&cat=41
