Hi guys,
I just want to present you my new (old) project in wich i spent almost one year and half, that's why it's new and old at the same time.
It's called MP V4 (MyProto version 4.A) and it's a chassis that use a lot of aftermarket components in order to be used always without being afraid of braking something that maybe you will not be able to find anymore. Because of this it uses standard (and hop-ups) motor mounts, t-plates, springs and knucles.
The front suspension it's a normal type Kyosho's one but with the possibility to change camber and caster just unscrewing two screws. In total there are 8 different carbon fiber tower bar that allows you to have 16 different combinations of camber-caster angles, always going from 0 to 3 degrees, and always with the same knucles!!!
It uses a sub-micro servo (maximum 23mm wide) and ball unions.
On the back side i decide to use standard size aftermarket motormounts and t-plates and i keep the possibility of configure the car in all the whelbase available right now: 86-90-94-98-102-106. The innovative point of the rear suspension is the ultralow multilenght disc suspension: now it's possible to have a 86 or 90mm disc suspension.
Due to the 2mm carbon fiber construction everything seats really very low in the chassis, batteries and servo are lower than ever, and all the other components are much more lower than in a stock 02. Also thanks to the CF material it's a very light and rigid chassis. The chassis on the photos is just 128.1gr without receiver, transponder and body, that means that you will have a closed to stock kyosho chassis weight and a 10 to 20gr lighter than a full option kyosho chassis (it will depend on the electronic part)
Between the battery pack there is enough room to put a micro receiver or a XRay micro ESC, any device that is maximum 27x15mm is ok. Also you can use this space to put some weight to better balance the car.
There is also a tray that helps the batteries to stay on its place and is also usefull to put the other electronic parts of the car. This tray is made out of 1mm carbon fiber and weights almost 1.5gr.
And now some photos (98mm wb with Atomic AR-163 motor mount)

It's definitely interesting to see so many different takes on the MR02 conversion chassis concept.
How does this chassis mount AutoScale bodies?

Was wondering the same thing.
Looks good, but I would like to have a top shock, which I suppose could be mounted to the upper deck, and clipped on to a pivot ball on top of the disc damper shaft... although that may interfere with some bodies and transponders.
Is this planned for a public release? If so, what is the estimated price?

Thank you guys, in the next days i will try to make a 94 or 90mm one to see the differences.

Yes, a Lambo Countach LP500 with lithium batteries can be amazing.

Good question, i'll use body posts and clips like in the bigger scales. I would like to test this car in the Hurda Challenge but here in Italy it's not possible.

Right now, there are just three units of this version (i have two and one friend of mine has the other one) and i want to test mine in this way: one with Kyosho electronics and a four wires servo and other one with standard electronics (normal sub-micro servo, ESC and receiver)
The next step will be to produce a five or ten units production.
The price shouldn't be too high because it's just a chassis that not include motor mount, knucles, springs, wheels... just the chassis kit to assemble with the best components you prefer: Atomic, PN Racing...
Thanks,
Bye!
I would love to see a 90mm MM compatable chassis. Looks really good, a video of it running would be great too.

Man, this is the simplest blueprint & built 1/28 CF double deck chassis up-grade for the MR-02 I have seen up to now. It “looks” light and rigid. The strategy of coming out just with the CF chassis conversion kit for a reasonable price is just a wonderful idea. Without doubt if the chassis performs good, components are of high-quality (screws & nuts don’t look of good quality) and the $ is right, plus we will have the option to select our preferred parts from deferent manufactures as; Atomic, PN, 3Racing etc, makes it more attractive and sellable, as you can practically customize your car to our own liking and needs.:D
Definitely, it is great we have these entire new coming CF chassis, just hope that all of them make it to the market, accessible for our full enjoyment, as it will make more rich and interesting races events, do to the variety of chassis competing.
Ivanmartin18, PLEASE!!!! Keep us up-dated with the evolution of this chassis.

Great!!! a few months ago I was thinking with all these new 1/28 CF chassis coming out, why doesnt anyone make a 1/28 chassis that uses many of the already established after market hop ups. Boom!!! there it is :D
Also great to see possibilities for 86mm to 106mm wheelbase. Hurry up and finish it up man!!! I have a spinner esc and a spectrum micro RX waitting for the MP V5 :D
Keep up the good work ivanmartin18

Forgot to mention if your are making this chassis so compatible with so many established hop ups, why not make it fit Autoscale normally without body post or at least have that option
Thanks

Does the chassis have many track hours? I like the simplicity of its design. How is the front end holding up? Any issues with the kingpins pulling through the CF or the knuckles breaking/bending at the post.
Im not the cleanest driver and I know I can put the chassis through some good durability testing.....:D

HI guys,
Thank you for your opinions and questions.
Cherub1m, i'ill start to use body post beacuse is the most easy ans sicure way to hold the body and helps if you want to use another kind of body like lexan or not Autoscale ones, of course it's not the most aesthetical solution but to hold the body i think it's one of the best. I foresee also the possibility of machine some supports for the Autoscales, there it's the space and the possibility but it's going to be quite expensive, so i prefer to leave this possibility for the future.
Bermbuster, i think there are not going to be any knid of problems with the lower support of the kingpins, whatever i will start with the tests today...
EMU, I start to think about the top shock and it's not a big problem to install it so for the next version i will try with it.
Thank you!
Ciao!
Thanks for the heads up. It looks like it would be very easy to incorporate a top shock as is. At first glance I was under the impression that the damper post moved, however, it is the plate. A shock should be able to mount on the standard shock mount for the motormount, to the disc damper post. Looks easy enough ;)

You can make the Autoscale side mounts out of flat carbon fiber, just cut two pieces that slot together and you can form the required shape. :)
http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/166/rd0216hsob5.jpg
It's not completely perfect (still have to trim the body clips on the Autoscale) but it's cheap and easy. IMO, fitting Autoscale bodies should be a priority for a chassis that uses so many Mini-Z parts. ;)

Hi!
Thanks for the idea, i've already seen it in your topic, it's a nice idea but it doesn't fit in my chassis, there are other mechanical and structural pieces that are in the same place and i should change too many pieces that now has an optimal position and works great. If i want to copy the AutoScale holding system i have to change to many other things that can affects in a negative way to the functional, simple, and clean design of this chassis.
The priority is to use high grade "mechanical" mini-z parts to have a more resistant, light and fast 1/27 racer and not to look nice in the shelve. Of course you can fit Auto Scale bodies, you just have to hold it in a different way :D
I test a little bit the car the last thursday and all i can say is that the suspension and the steering is much more precise than a full optional 02, it handles great. I can't wait for the next thursday with a new motor, the one i tested was too slow...
Ah! The final weight with everything is 174.8gr (chassis + body + wheels + batteries + reveiver + esc + servo) Not bad, eh?

Hi ivanmartin
I don't believe color01 was expecting the exact duplicate of his system, but has a starting point for you to come up with your own design. Because your chassis is different. Looking at your picture of your design, if the top battery holder is very secure. You could easily cut a vertical slot on the battery holder and make a similar small piece from color01's picture of his autoscale chassis body clip and you would have the ability for autoscale and lexan pan cars if you wanted. people may have to reposition the body clips but most already do that.
Please don't take offense to my continuous asking about making your chassis autoscale compatible, it is more of a reaction to how much I like your design and I think if your were able to incorporate this, more people would gravitate toward it because its so versatile.
174.8gr that is awsome.
Keep up the good work

Bon giorno ivanmartin.
Please keep us posted with the outcome of your frequent tests to your chassis, if you can post a video of your next test on Thursday, which would be Fantastico, so we can appreciate visually your chassis perform.
Regarding auto-scale chassis body clip, I think same as you “light and fast 1/27 racer and not to look nice in the shelve” That’s exactly what I am desperate seeking for on this 1/27 scale, a real racer chassis conceptualized for high end performance, definitely not a toy as mini-z’s. I guess that some guys think same as us, but the reality is, that most persons that enter this category, they are first motivated by the passion for cars, accessible price, definitely for the “looks” and variety of bodies Kyosho offers, lets not leave behind the fact that this 1/27 Mini-zs cars can be run in practically any area of your home plus they are FUN. So if you are considering your chassis for an “exclusive” segment of the market, that is interested in a real performance 1/27 racer chassis, don’t worry about the auto-scale chassis body clips. But if your target is to sell and make a business of it, you have to consider; price and looks, so the idea of designing and offering a set of auto-scale chassis body clips as an option, could be a good asset as a gimmick to sell more. Just a healthy contemplation.:)
Ciao
Cheers
I am one for performance first. I would like the use of the front body clip over the post mounts, the rear... I wouldnt mind using posts. Without the front body clip, you would have to include a front foam bumber to prevent the body from hitting the wheels on impact. Which, would weigh more than the front clip. Also, the Kyosho bodies are not that durable, so a hole going through them with a post, is sure to crack much sooner than with the clip system used by Kyosho. They crack enough as is...
Whichever mounting method, I would still like to get one to try.

I don't take offense at all! I'm glad that you participate in this thread and give ideas to make a better chassis.
The point is that phisically there is not space to install-design-put any kind of system to hold the Autoscale side clips. It's just impossible with this chassis design, i should design again all the rear part and for the moment i prefer to go in the direction i said before: simplicity and functionality.
For the front end you can use body post or CF front clips.

Finally i've tested yesterday for the very first time.
It was better than expected but there are some improvements to do.
The steering is very very precise but i had a little bit of oversteering under aceleration, maybe i should move more weight to the rear part and i have to check how the suspension disc is working.

Hi Ivan,
Very interesting and simple chassis. A bit of a drawback that ASC's can't be used out of the box, but I understand your design priorities in not supporting them. It will definitely hurt your sales if you're planning on releasing the chassis commercially though.
I'm very interested in the steering linkage and tie rods used. Can you provide some further info (part #'s?) and perhaps some more closeups of your solution?
Thanks and great looking car!

Ivan, adding a top spring should remove the on-power oversteer, it'll load the rear tires a bit more the moment you pull the trigger. Overall car looks good, I'm curious about that tierod you have. :)

Thanks Brian, I will try with a top damper but before i've to design one because the space is very small for a standard one.

As promised, here there are some new photos.
I put a rear damper made out in a very simple way using some parts from a stock kyosho damper and DPS Atomic springs and it works great! Thanks Brian for the idea.
About the steering link as i tell before is a very simple thing: I've used again two ball connectors from kyosho stock dampers, M2 threaded bar and heat shrink to cover everything. I made a 1mm hole in one of the ball conectors and using a Z shaped 1mm piano wire i connect it to the servo. That's it!
Of course, now is time to improve this system and i will put a longer L shaped piano wire in order to link the farest ball conector to the servo arm with a micro linkage stopper.
Note: the ball connectors that i use are some Atomic 4.1mm spare balls and ball connectors that were made for XRay M18 car but is easier to get the ball ends of kyosho stock damper right now and it works well.

Istill dont understand how its mounted?
Cody, he has made a mount that accepts the Kyosho MR02/015 t-plates... it screws through an extra piece on the chassis... which is screwed in to the main chassis with the 2 screws that are in front of the t-plate and 2 screws that are between each pair of batteries. You can see this in the picture of the bottom... It looks like a nice design.
I believe that the damper post is also attached to this t-plate mount...

Thanks EMU for your explanation, it's exactly like you said. I'm not very good explaning myself in my mother tongue so imagine what happens when i try in english :-)
Whatever, here there are a couple of images in wich you can see better how is it.
Behind the t-plate there is a normal 02 triangle mount that is used to separate the t-plate form all the other surfaces and to leave it free for movement (like a MR-02 or 03).
Behind the triangle mount there is a "big" carbon fiber T that is secured with four screws to the main chassis and that is what i've called the t-plate. This t-plate mount is full of holes as you can see in order to use all the MM wheelbases just moving the screws, there is no need anymore to change motor-mount or DPS.
The last thing that i added to the proto is a last "layer" made out of 2.5mm alluminium that makes easyer to replace the t-plates in an easy way and helps to hold the DPS post. Before the screws that hold the t-plate were tighten with normal nuts but it was quite complex to change it so i decide to go in this way... This alluminium piece is hold with two screws to the t-plate mount when the t-plate is not installed and with 4 screws when the t-plate is on it. I think is a very tought system.

Hey Ivan I got to see your chassis at Z_408's shop.. it is extremely nice.. the one thing that swtuck out to me was that the balls and pivoting joints (servo saver + shock) were binding a lot.. that can easily be fixed but I would look into making a production run of them. Does someone know something about the user Z_408? I sent him my MP-V4 past in december 2009 to run on the Tekin National Race and after knowing that my car was not going to be driven I asked to send it back to me.
I received an answer in which he told me that he was going to send it to me and after that i knew nothing more, i send some MPs with no answer...
I trust that Z_408 is a serious user but is not nice this lack of information, moreover if you think that the car that is sent is a unique piece in the world.
So please, if someone of you meet him in person and can ask him to read this it could be very usefull.
Thanks for your help.

To be honest, it's quite stopped as a project.
Slightly different from the last pictures, with ASF esc and LiPo powered.
I'll try to make some photos just to show the update.

Hi guys,
I'm proud to announce that the car has raced in a commercial fair, here in Italy, and it has finished 4th in the A final.
Before the race, it was tested for only 2 hours :)
http://www.minizracing.it/gare/risultati/PanCar_Trophy_Novegro_2013/index.html
We' ve found very hard to set-up the car because of its lightness (110gr ready to run and we still a lot of chance to reduce); another weak point is the steering transmission, it's so important to have a good servo saver! If you have any ideas... :D

Car looks great! You're using the same servo I am, its great for the price. You may want to open it up and very carefully glue the motor and pot in place, it will help it last longer and center better. A micro servo saver would be great, for now I make sure my body protects the front wheels somewhat(when used with an MRCG chassis)
On the small cars designing in precise steering linkage is the hardest part.

I love this view of the chassis, it's even lower than my MRCG! Lipo makes for so much more fun laying out chassis configurations.

Thanks a lot!
TheSteve, thanks for the tip on the servo, i'll glue pot and motor ;)
Color01, these LiPo are only 7mm height, that are 3.5mm less than AAA NiMh ;). It looks super flat when you have it in the hand.
Herman, that's a simple and effective concept. I'll try it!
Now i'm working on a different configuration on the same chassis: brushed motor, ASF esc, LiPo (actually i'm looking for a tiny lipo saver) and grease dumper tube on the rear suspension.
Stay tuned.
Regards!
looks superb!! great work :)
would kits be available?

i actually have a kawada with a similar servo saver set up (bought a kit from donut himself)… it is quite sufficient, and you can adjust the spring tension

Hi, it's been a log time since last time i posted updates.
I've updated a little bit all the chassis to make it more functional. I've order new CNC carbon fiber parts for the front end, the rear suspension and the esc support and batteries. I've designed a completely new servo saver for Futaba S3154 and a new MR03 t-plate support built by Shapeways ( https://www.shapeways.com/product/MRPM9X92P/servo-saver-futaba-s3114?li=search-results-1&optionId=38491374 ).
Now it's much more functional and the design is cleaner and nicer. I don't know how competitive it is now as our club is not doing very well and there is a big risk of closure :(.
Important for me it's that now is almost finished, a custom built chassis is never finished.
