Sorry if it's a stupid question.

Can I use any 2.4GHz radio (e.g. Futaba 3PM or Spectrum DX3R) on the 2.4 GHz mini-Zs (or indeed any RTR 2.4 GHz cars such as the Losi Mini-LST2)?

Advice much appreciated.

I think it has been tested and confirmed that the Spectrum radios do not work with the 2.4 ASF system, if they did, I would buy one.

2.4GHz KoPropo ASF receivers require ASF radios or modules, 2.4GHz Spektrum DSM receivers require DSM radios or modules, 2.4GHz Futaba FASST receivers require FASST radios or modules, etc.

The KoPropo RF-901SM 2.4GHz SS Module for the 2.4GHz ASF Mini-Z should be out any day now, it is suppose to be compatible with the KoPropo EX-1 Mars (R), EX-10 Helios, Esprit 3 Universe, and EX-1 UR radios.

So with a radio like the Helios you would be able to use a Spektrum SM1001 DSM module for the Mini-LST2, RF-901SM 2.4GHz Mini-Z module for the ASF Mini-Zs, and the RF-501A 27MHz AM module for current AM Mini-Zís, etc.

Gets a bit expensive at $50 to $80 per module and a $250 + radio but in the long run itís worth it.

For other high end radios like the Futaba 3PK it will likely be possible with a little luck to adapt the RF-901SM module, just like with the RF-501A, but it does involve a little cutting a little grinding, and swapping a few pins around.

To clarify "KoPropo EX-1 Mars (R)" do you mean the original Mars AND the R or just the R? I read it as both, but just wanted to be sure.

Donít know  thatís exactly how KoPropo wrote it. My guess would be both because of the parenthesis, seems to me that if it was just the R they would have referred to it as EX-1 Mars R.

Yeah, I was meaning to ask that, and The info is very helpful. Thanks as well.

All Ko Radio systems that use a module will be able to use the 2.4 gig mini-z module.

Thanks for clearing that up Tim!

Does anybody know if the Kyosho dnano spectrum radio can be bound with non-dnano car? I would like to know if anybody has found a rc car receiver to work with the dnano radio.

The dNaNo radio uses the KoPropo ASF 2.4Ghz system and is only compatible with KoPropo "ASF" receivers (see above post). In other words they only work with cars that have Kyosho ASF receivers (made by KoPropo) and for now that is only the Mini-Z and dNaNo. At one time rumor had it that the Mini Inferno's would eventually be coming out with a compatible ASF receiver. But as far as I know that was or still is just a rumor, one problem is that KoPropo seems to be working on newer/improved radio software/hardware to compete with DSM and FAST in the future and it doesn’t look like those will be Mini-Z/dNaNo ASF compatible.

Note on the 2.4 GHz system names and acronyms:
DSM = Digital Spectrum Modulation (by Spektrum now a division of Horizon Hobby Inc.)
FASST = Futaba Advanced Spread Spectrum Technology (by Futaba)
ASF = Auto Selected Frequency (made for Kyosho by KoPropo)
There are others, for example Airtronics has two DSS and FHSS, but currently DSM followed by closely FASST are sitting on top of the industry 2.4GHz RC totem pole.

If I buy a mini-z 2.4ASF car, can I use a KO Propo EX-5 UR straight out of the box without installing the included RX?

Sorry if this seem like dumb question. I am think of getting into mini-z racing and adding a brushless setup to Losi mirco DT. This way I can use the TX for both vehicles.

Thanks,

Brian

To the best of my knowledge … no.

This link might help (http://www.kopropo.com/america/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=109&Itemid=153) scroll down to “Mini-Z Products Available”

ko propo ex-5ur is now available for mini-z 2.4asf and dnano...

click here (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=ja&u=http://www.kyosho.com/jpn/products/rc/detail.html%3Fproduct_id%3D105893&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dasf%2Bex-5ur%26hl%3Den&rurl=translate.google.com)

the ex-5 ur looks like it works on 2.4ghz specifically (meaning it doesn't accept any modules)

other radio's have tx modules to operate on different frequencies... am, fm, 2.4ghz...
don't know what frequency the losi micro dt runs on... if it's am, you will need the am module... and if you want to run the mini-z asf 2.4ghz, you will need the 2.4ghz module...

hope this helps...

Micro DT of Losi is a plain AM band.. but I can use it for my AM band AWD mini Z (much better than the stock KT05)

Nice find wonder when/if it will be offered in the US, problem is that unless the ASF version of the EX5 UR is some how also compatible with KoPropo's KR-407s or some other receiver it still won't do what he wants. It sounds like he wants to convert his Mico-T to brushless which means he needs a separate small receiver to use with the brushless Micro-DT/T ESC, as well as a radio that works with both the Mini-Z and that receiver.

 Now if they sold a separate three wire servo compatible Mini-Z size ASF micro receiver with or for that ASF EX-5 UR (and :D other ASF radios) …

My solution to the same 2.4GHz dilemma was to go with a EX-10 and three modules, a Spektrum DSM for my larger cars and converted Micro-Ts, a Mini-Z ASF module, and 27MHz AM module, end result one radio capable of running most of my cars. The good news is that a EX-10 w/ ASF Module isn’t all that expensive, the bad is the cost of the DSM module and receiver.

27 MHz AM is certainly another/inexpensive way to go; all you need is a decient compatable 27MHz AM radio, stick to AM Mini-Z's (not my choice or recommendation, love the 2.4GHz ASF CB's control and detest crystals) and a small inexpensive AM receiver for the Micro-DT.

I emailed KO Propo and received this answer.

The module for the EX-5 UR is integrated to the Tx. This system will not work with the Mini-Z as it operates on a different 2.4GHz system.

Great customer service though...

ex-5ur (for kyosho mini-z / dnano)... may not be available in some countries... i believe it is a ''japan'' release only...
