Berm, from what I understand, the track cannot be able to be commercialized in the US because of the patent RCP holds on the design...

One is made out of foam and the other one is made out of carpet. What exactly are the details of the RCP patents? Using MR02 kingpins; T-plates and knuckles as examples, Kyosho makes aluminum knuckles; graphite T-plates and S.S. kingpins. Atomic and PN also make the same. Doesn't Kyosho hold a design patent on the Mini-z that it prevents the manufacturers above to copy the products? Also, can someone or a shop "using" the pirated carpet track be arrested in US? Just wondering.

I'd like to use a version of "RCP" style carpet track; I wish RCP makes one. From my observation the RCP tiles do not age very well with weather such as New York's weather. The rails also chunk easily on impact and I'd prefer a much slippier rail system for the cars to slide through. The design is clever, however. I wonder how the pirated rails compare. My local track may put Atomic pirated rails on their RCP track to see if they fit.

RCP dust vs. Carpet hair. Which one is more harmful to the lungs? That's my next question.

You can view the RCP Track US patent at the USTPO website, where the complete patent is available to the public for viewing. Patent number US 6,908,396 B1.

I don't have knowledge of the patents Kyosho may or may not own, so I can't comment on that part of your statement.

you can also use the rcp rail liners to create the slippier rails.

Please do not mind and argue on this copyright problem
It is not necessary to earn money on every product
Sometimes, we just want fun.
I suggest that US users can buy stuff in Hong Kong and contact me, then we can use a group method to ship the products and share the postage fee.
Then players can still enjoy the joy of racing.
Then we can decrease the postage fee and don't haev to worry about copyright problem

counterfeited goods are a serious problem and not an issue to be taken lightly. please be aware that counterfeited goods are subject to seizure by u.s. customs.

i'm not saying this applies or will happen to anyone importing this knock off track (no disrespect implied or intended but it is a copy) but there are potential implications that may not be kind of friendly.

if anyone recalls, kyosho jpn made made similar warnings when it became common practice to import mini-z's vs. buying via inflated great planes distribution chain. it was not about counterfeit mini-z's that they worried about but subversion of their exclusive u.s. distribution system and great planes loss of revenue as a result. we all know it happened and most of us imported so it happens.

The present invention pertains generally to foam race tracks for racing remote control toy vehicles, and more particularly to foam race tracks with foam side borders which both keep the vehicles from exiting the race track and prevent damage to the vehicles.

that was taken from verbage of the patent. The track in question is carpet.
it is not an exact copy and it definitely isnt a counterfeit because it is not being sold or labeled as RCP.... I think we will be seeing this track soon......

You have quoted one sentence from a patent that is made up of many "claims". The way I read the "claims", it doesn't have to be an exact copy or need to be labeled as RCP to infringe nor does it have to be made from foam. I would highly suggest getting the advice from a patent lawyer, if you plan to sell your track here in the US.

What a day! The track is brand new so it was like an ice skating ring in the morning. Naturally, 02 and 03 drivers have really hard time with it. Towards the end of the day traction is acceptable. I had problem with my transponder with both heats and the organizer did the right thing to re-run our group. I ended 23rd which I hoped to improve tomorrow. For the US team Stephen did the best sitting in 4th. I believe Roland is 12th and Sai is 15th.

The Atomic organization is world class. I think Stephen had 1000+ photos with the trophy girls! Fun is had by all. That's it for now. Need to get more sleep.

I posted two pics I copied from the Atomic RC Face Book:D. I want to place attention to the Ford GT body, it seems that this version of the body has a front air-dam:D. This is something that could protect the front end of this body and eliminate the dreaded front tires coming out once you touch the side wall or worst, the car taking flight. If this is for real where can I get this version of the body?

Just got back in town. I would like to thank Mr. Fong, his Atomic crew, and their sponsors for putting on the show. Their staff have great energy and make everyone feels welcome. I'm impressed. You can see from the pictures that it attracted big crowds too.

The level of racing is high. The HK and TW drivers proved that they are the ones to beat. The brand new tiled carpet track is a challenge to set up. That's the achilles heel for the USA drivers. We struggled to find the elusive set up which never came. Stephen had a good qual on the first day to get into the triple A-main. Roland and Sai made the B-main. Sai finally got his car working for the main and ended up 3rd. I had all sorts of problem with the transponder and my setup and landed in the C-main.

It's great to hang out with the international drivers as well as the USA team. Willy Wong was there as the grand marshall and Bennett Lo as the emcee.

Also, thanks Alex from TRP who gave all drivers a nicely painted Renault Megane to bring home. You can see it from the pictures.

A few observations:
- If you are not driving an AWD then you are not in the As.
- If you are not driving a 350z 05 then you are most likely not in the As or Bs.

what lapcounting system was used for the event?

Gofast
2009.11.11, 08:11 PM
It's Robitronics. The transponder is close to an inch thick so it's a challenge to sneak it in between the AWD chassis and the front window of the nsx without any binding.

Red Team
2009.11.12, 04:13 AM
Glad to hear that a World class event used the Robitronic system. I presume they'd use the advanced version ( the one that we - and others - never figured out how to use it ), but can you tell us for sure which version they used ?

Many of us here placed the transponder on top of the body, it's so small you'd not even notice, especially if you have a " dark " colour body.

phea
2009.11.13, 05:45 PM
Trip was awesome from start to finish. Although all the US drivers came at all different times, I guess there was not enough footage to put together for our arrival. Before the race, friday, most of the racers went to MMS to practice n setup their cars. Practice/racing at their track is very tight and fast. To my surprise the cars can actually handle the turns and transitions. Also I noticed that the tires get naturally sticky after running. Keep in mind the tires to run are 10*/10* for 010's and atm's tires are very soft. But they don't fly off the rim, if lets say you dont tape or glue tires, unlike RCP. Racers over there are pretty nice, one of them helped me out alot on tuning the ma-010 chassis for the track.

Qualifying day was very exciting and a bit of a struggle trying to find the right tires. I ended up using the slick tires that I ran at MMS since they gave me the most rear traction at the time. Later I found out that the tire to run was the straight grooved tires, but it was too late for me to switch over by Race day since their is not enough practice to break in tires. Broken in tires are definitely something to run.

The next day for the last qual, I was certain I can step up my performance. After lots of testing out new tires, I managed to misplace my rear tires that worked for me. So plan B was initiated and I had to go with a 20/10 combo that made my car under-steer. Car was alright to my driving style but definitely way off pace of the HK/TW drivers. They must of stepped up their cars overnight at least 2/3x faster from day 1 of qualifying.

By end of qual's, my first qual landed me in 8th position in the A-main. Racing was difficult for me since my car was off pace with all the other racers. Basically I had no chance in the mains, since they are much more prepared and had more experience with the ma-010 chassis and carpet. Overall I enjoyed racing with the best of them and i'm glad that Atomic gave me this opportunity to participate in this world class event.

I just got back from a long vacation.

I arrived HK late in the night before the race. There was no guarantee entry for me. Luckily one local guy was unable to make it and I took his spot. As a result there was one more entry from the US.

The new carpet track was new to everybody. The grip was much lower compared to the track at MMS. My AWD was Okay but not great. I struggled during the 3 qualifiers and lapped cars were not cooperating. I ended up in the B-main. I was not totally satisfied but if I were in the A-main I would have much lower chances of winning or being the top-5 finishers.

During the B-main I think I was 2nd place for a few minutes. I crashed and gave my position away. For a long time, I was in solid third with no one in front of me and a car somewhat closely behind. It was a long 12 minute race so I drove conservatively. I chose the Atomic AD stock with 19/27 gearings and TRP batteries. I had good power from start to finish and my motor didn't overheat. I ended up in B-3 with a trophy.

After the race we were greeted by a dinner celebration. Atomic President also approached me and discussed his view on serving and supporting the US or North American customers. I gave him my opinions and we talked for almost another half a day afterwards. At the end I was given a position as North American Atomic customer support and product tester. I will give more details in later communication.

It was great getting to know racers from around the globe. Everybody had fun in this event.

Professional quality videos were taken. I don't know who has them.

SaiTam,
thank you for your brief thoughts on the new carpet track. there has been little said of this unfortunately. as a product, it's certainly newsworthy and we are obviously interested in this news.

i am also very glad to hear you will be part of the US atomic support team. when you get settled, please email me. :)

The Carpet track is still undergoing development according to Atomic. The pins need to be reworked. The rails are slippery and everyone was pleased.

Hey Sai

Congrats on you new role with Atomic RC. Also, nice showing at the Atomic worlds.

Slippery rails are nice. When you say reworking the pins, are you referring to the side rails? I know there is an issue with patents. With these changes will the Atomic track system be compliant with patent laws and be able to sell in the US?

I'm not familiar with patent law and I can't say on behalf on Atomic. Basically if a patent owner feels his product rights are violated they can go ahead and file a law suit. The track is not on sale on this moment; it is undergoing development and changes.

Ok Thanks. It would be nice to see different races with different surfaces. 1/28 Carpet Nationals and 1/28 RCP Nationals. Keep us updated.

Good luck at the Garden State Shoot Out.

Nice!!! I guess those are the Atomic 10 degrees all the way around? Looks like the top drivers used the AWD chassis. What happened to the Le man class at the atomic race? I know they had a touring class, a Le Man class and a Kyosho class.

Different surfaces are good as long as it isn't designed into modular interlocking tiles with bordering rails. This would infringe on the current Patent that the owners of RCP Tracks, Inc have on file.

"Different surfaces are good"

Does this mean RCP will make a carpeted surface? :D

Yes patent laws are tricky. Its like all the other modular surfaces out there used for garages, playground, and houses. The material used, some are in rubber, plastic, wood and God knows what else. Its tricky how these manufactures maneuvered around those patent laws and still made their own modular flooring. Anyways, they are so many other ways to make a portable track without infringing on RCP Tracks' patent, I can't believe manufacturers haven't gone those routes. Hope you guys incorporate a little carpet in your future tracks. One side RCP the other Carpet :D.

Good news. Let's hope they are moving away from the current design and coming up with something different and unique that doesn't possibly infringe on the current US patent.

There are other ways to make tracks. No need to copy what's already out there.

In my opinion, I am pretty sure if you asked iWaver about their first version of RC cars, they would say it would have been better to start with something that was not a copy to the Mini-z. Would have saved them some money and headaches in the long run, I bet.

Yep 10's all around for awd. 20/10 for 2wd. As for lemans class, i was told they did not have enough people signed up. I bought a vds awd body too =( maybe I can try it for the up coming tekin race in Jan.

i'm still very curious about the consistency and handling on carpet tiles. how are the tile joints compared to foam tiles?

is the carpet laminated to a foam base?

there are many carpet fans and i think a carpet option would be welcomed.

The track was pretty smooth and grip developed after about 1 day of running.
Tire wear was minimal, I was using 20/10. Grip was consistent within the racing lines.

The joints were surprisingly smooth. Pins need to be reworked to prevent them from flying off under hard impact.

Not sure whether carpet was laminated to a foam base.

As you can see the AWD Mod cars run awesome on carpet. Nobody traction rolled and 12 minute run time was not an issue with anyone.

Oh, I thought their was something AWDish about those cars, the way they were handling. So no one ran a 2wd in those rounds?

What was the popular body being used??

Dave, I think the body of choice was the 05 350Z. Followed by the SC430...

Atomic-USA
2009.12.04, 04:23 PM
2005 350Z body -- everybody wanted to get one in HK. It's the most sought-after body there.

Nobody wants the 2007 350Z there. I ran one but mine has a lot of shaved edges.

There were a few 2WD but disadvantages were obvious; given the new carpet.

Thank you for posting up the vids. I have been patiently waiting. ;)

I was thinking with the tile type track, there will be lots of hoping, but it seems like its pretty smooth. You can see some cars drifts around the corner instead of chattering like what we currently have. Man, that looks super smooth! :)

Yeah the cars look very smooth. Hurry up and get those rails re-worked so you dont have any issues with RCP and bring that stuff here to the US.

Willy rocks; I wish he had raced. :P

Did it seem like there were a lot of crashes in these races? There were a lot of cars on the track, but even so, it seemed chaotic.

I brought up the issue to AtomicHK but I do not make the ultimate decision. BTW only a supreme court judge determines what can be or cannot be sold.

The layout was very tight; with 10 cars and a tight race crashes were unavoidable. What's chaotic was not knowing who the lead cars were; when most people used 350Z body.
