Since so many of the guys have been purchasing awd's lately and as we are now running them i figured i would start an AWD specific thread... feel free to ask any questions or post any thoughts about the awd...

after having such a blast with the awd's last thur i beilive this can be yet another class that takes off.... sa as usual to MHS fashion wwe are all here to help bring each other up and become the best we can... so i for one have questions and advice from months of trial and error so lets just get it out here and not eat up time on the main discussion thread... we can discuss tuning (SAS), gearing, motors, batteries, bodies, offsets... what ever is need im sure someone here can help someone....

this is another good idea, i finally wipped mine out and it runs great (with Jr's set up) i really need to just get some more track time (like today) because the thing has so much power i just can't use it all right now. As i progress i'm sure i'll be hitting you up for pointers.

Darn chassis melted so now mine end up to be Blue and gray plus PN Orange!
Chassis was in bad shape already as used car so it was not bad timing to completely replace it but got to learn about gear ratio vs. motor since AWD is all new ballgame to me. It took me 2 hrs to build this baby back up so now it is pretty & fresh also with a 43T motor. Maj may make it an AWD Spec class motor!

put together a aarm front on my awd drive last nite with the help of maj...

All i can say is awesome... in the beginning we realized that it was a little to good for the stock rear end... i reall hope pn come out with aarm rear so both front and rear have equal travel and handling characteristics... besides that the kit is amazing... watching maj put it together u appreciate the engineering behind it... after driving it for a bit we started talking about the kyosho sas and wondering how it would compliment the aarm front.. then i remembered that i had a atomic sas pro in my bag (which is the aluminum one not the all plastic one which is ilighter)... so i threw it on tuned it up and the car was amazing... 197 ready to race.... i put a pn 43t motor in it and the car is gonna be a killer on this track... i cant wait to get my hands on a kyosho sas as it seems to me the corrected the flaws and slop of the atomic sas... and i believe its lighter and will also do 90mm where the atomic sas can only do a min of 94mm...

all in all i can honestly say this aarm front is a must have for awd... with aarm front and sas rear its dam hard to flip the car... endless amount of ateering, feel and feedback... i am very impressed and happy with the purchase...

Glad to see a AWD resurgence. :)

So how will M.H.S. be running this? Separate class with motor, or still GT Mod?

JuniorWKR
2010.08.11, 10:12 PM
seperate class with 43t motor...

EMU
2010.08.11, 11:36 PM
I thought it was the 39t  Guess I need to swap the motor now... I think 43t is a better choice anyway. Should be very close in speed, but it is much more efficient and runs cooler.

Cherub1m
2010.08.12, 08:50 AM
seperate class with 43t motor...

Glad to hear AWD class will be separated again. Well, at least at MHS. However, why limit the motor to 43T? Why not have it open motor? My rational is since PN is running mixed 2wd and AWD in GT mod, practicing/running the AWD in club races with a motor limit makes it hard to fine tune the car with the right motor. Lots of testing goes into club racing, the testing will not be optimum if the motor is limited. PN has 50T, 43T, 39T, 35T(i think they are still making it), 33T, and 32T motor all very fast with advantages and disadvantages. My request is open the motor for AWD class.

JuniorWKR
2010.08.12, 09:49 AM
emu you are correct... the 43t motor is way more efficient and pleanty fast...

Philip... a spec motor will make for more competitve racing and will allow the newer drivers to awd a n oppurtunity to keep up without fear of getting punted off of the straightaway... with clean lines and smart driving i think 43t awd will pull the most amount of laps on this layout...

I hear you, I still like opening up the motor for AWD, they need and can handle the power :D. Either way, I'll be running AWD no matter what the motor :D. I am just glad AWD will have a class of its own. Bring on the 43T:D.

JuniorWKR
2010.08.12, 03:48 PM
philip to be honest on this layout that is down now the 43t motor will be the fastest... i tried t2, 35 and 33t motors and i was fastest with 43...

43T here I come:D

Junior, did you try out your AWD with PN front and SAS rear at Maj's? on my Mini96 for some reason I am getting a violent rear hop when I use the SAS kit. The Pn Front A-Arm coupled with the stock Kyosho rear works great no hop. With the SAS I get a major hop when I take some corners very hard. I may have to add some more glue to the front tires.

The Dr. still up?
Get Kyosho's DWS rear for now in matching PN's Front DAA
which is what I am thinking until PN have much demand to make a rear.

Yeah had to bring some work home :(. I have the first gen SAS and the version 1 of the SAS Pro I may try tuning them a little better and see how that works. I am not sure about the DWS yet I do like the center bearing for the spur gear, that is very nice for the 98mm set up. So far the stock Kyosho rear end ran well on the Mini96. Will see how it does at Maj's tonight.

Purple springs all around did the trick somehow but I know truing is the main Key.

So what are people generally running on this new PN front end? I know it will differ on the driver, and rear end being used. Camber, caster, ride hight, droop, springs, lube etc....

Old Crow

I've been running untrued tires, and it doesn't seem to matter what kind of hard/softness, I still traction roll or I have no traction at all. For those of you who true your tires for AWD, are you gluing them on the wheel also? Do you remove the inner wheel lip, or does that stay? Is there one offset way to go, or is it just preferance? Am I missing something else to do with the wheels/tires? I just can't get my AWD consistent, so I'm looking at everything to try to get back to a driveable car, I'm out of ideas.

I started working on my set up....:D
Im trying something new on my end. I am not the fastest or do I have tight lines. I started tinkering with my new AWD and the set up possibilities has me excited. I am going to start off conservative and see how I can drive it.
Once I feel Im at my max lap time count I will change gearing to go faster and adjust the dws and a arm as needed.
Right now Im at a blazing 15/31 7.23 ratio...
dws settings
downstop .5mm
toe 4 degrees
camber 1mm
shock lube ruby lube
no preload

For the first few rounds of testing I am leaving the stock front end on the chassis. Im looking at my a arm kit and that may change....:D

as I progress I will make changes to one item at a time and see what improves for me. This is my first scientific approach to a set up and I even have a notebook so watch out...:D you may see an improved racer....

George, we just probably missed each other on set up time.
Dws settings :downstop .5mm, toe 3 degrees, camber 1mm, shock lube little bit ruby lube & thinnest spring spacer preload.
Rear end is so stable without chattering like I use to, so now I even have to turn down more steering.
Only ran an hour on track to get the feeling but I like it! More set up down the road.
By the way, it was good enough now for TD #1 to put one on his ultimate AWD!
