EVERYONE,
Back from the dark shadows of the global economy a light emerges...
Just a quick note that we are begining the planning for this year's event. I know the economy will be turned around by October so I expect the usual list of insane prizes.
Venue may change but track will remain huge (unless you are a weak 1/18th scale driver).:D

See you there, as I'm sure everyone who has attended once, will more than likely be there again! (how could they not!)
If you are reading this thread and have not attended this awesome event for an incredible cause... and you're a MiniZer within driving distance, there's probably something really wrong with you and you should seek psychiatric attention very soon! ;)

I hope its not October 10th! I tried to drop you a PM a while back to try and make sure I didnt step on your date, but scheduled our enduro for the 10th after not hearing from you. If it can slide two weeks later than that, Im sure we can drag some MB guys up there :D

Glad to hear you're doing this event again this year...I'm going to do my best to make it out and bring along a 'couple' of friends
I'm soo bummed I missed this race last year - it was a shame there was another 'big' race going on at Mimi's that same weekend:rolleyes:

Hey Russ,
I hope the event is towards the end of the month! I had a great time last year it was definately an awesome event. Since the event my wife has actually become involved an ALS walk in my area. Thought you might like to know that this is direct result of my attandence at your event.
Anyway hopefully the stars will be aligned correctly and I will be able to attend.

Jay,
This is amazing to hear about your wife. Please tell her thanks for supporting the cause so much.
EVERYONE,
The date is looking more like Oct 17 or 24 for our own purposes in scheduling/organization. The gear shift trophies along with some other prizes will be arriving next week! I am getting pscyhed!!:D

Is there an address for this event?
There are two options we are considering.
1. Previous location at Bowles Fluidics Corp, 6625 Dobbin Rd, Columbia, MD 21045
2. New location at Ark and Dove Presbyterian Church, Piney Orchard Pkwy, Odenton, MD 21113
The #1 is given, but #2 facility will be much better for everyone involved so long as we can confirm power supply for all the chargers. I am hoping #2 works out becuase it will continue to raise the bar for the event.
We will finalize it next week and send out registration fliers.

Usually we jam it all into Saturday. It is a long day but we have historically also provided food for everyone. You won't be disappointed but if you are traveling from afar you may want to consider spending the night Saturday (budget permitting).

From what I recall we ran 2.4 along with everyone else (see last year's attached spec sheet). Yes there is an advantage to 2.4 but not so much that it couldn't be compensated for by a better driver with a slower car. I think that was the justification of running the 2.4 with Stock:D. Needless to say I think the winners in the F1 were both running 2.4 AND were great drivers.

Russ... I'd suggest making stock 2WD class all 70 turn PN motors... and opening up the fets on all classes. Stock class is just that much cooler with the 70 turns and it really takes away any major advantages had by fet modifications. It just makes for a good separation in speed between the classes. I do like the F1 class allowing the 50 turn, but I think the allowable motor types should be specified. either that or just open up F1 to any motor same as the AWD class.
Just ideas... I'm sure many will agree with the 70 turn idea.

I'm open to changing stock to 70T. Anyone have a connection at PN that could hook us up with hand outs? That would be ideal.
I really like the idea of opening up the F1 to any motor. Wondering if the boys from VA have fast motors...:D Any objections to opening F1 to any motor?>>

Another benefit is taking the tech out of the mix too... you'll only really have to tech Stock Class and M18 then. I forget... do you have minimum weights for each class or is that open?
As far as handouts, I'm sure the majority of competitors will have some laying around to use but handouts would be super cool. I'm sure Phil will help out with this.

I disagree with restricting the motor to one manufacturer. I would prefer to use an Atomic Standard Race USA motor for stock classes... You wont be able to satisfy everyone.
Most racers have already modified their cars with fets, since there are no more fet restrictions in any of the cup series races.

But there is a huge difference between the PN and the Atomic "Stocks"... how many turns does the Atomic Standard USA have?... does anyone know?
It just seems like PN really picked a winner when they went with 70 turns... it just evens out everyone's speed so well. The Atomic Standard USA I have is more like an 07 or an Xspeed than a 70 turn. If they do give a chance to pick between these two motors for a stock class I would absolutely have to use the Atomic due to it's greater power.
The USA motor is not as fast as the Speedy 07. More like the Speedy 05 in terms of speed. An average motor with average batteries will still perform pretty well. Wtih a 70t you need the best batteries and chargers on the market, and a good pick on the motor to have good speed.
A lot of race events have adopted the 70t, and it is a little too slow... Making everyone have to constantly buy new batteries to get the fastest on the market. I buy new cells everytime I go to a new PN event, just to stay competetive. Over $100 for new cells gets to be rediculous after 3 events in a year... Old cells just dont cut it for a 70t class.

All good input.
If we can get hand outs courtesy of PN Racing then it will be 70T, however, if we cannot get the hook up then we will keep the motor to 50T (as before) only this time with FETs allowed, essentially only difference to mod is chassis and motor turns.
This is charity race so I don't want to get carried away with too many rules.

SO, the MiniZ STK spec is 50T with any PCB (3010, 2.4, FETs, etc).

That sounds like a reasonable plan. A Saturday drive down in the AM will exhaust you before the race and we usually finish at 9pm Saturday night. The roads back North will be empty but you are still getting back home at 12midnight - a very long day. I would suggest a hotel in the BWI Airport area or one near the Arundel Mills Mall. Both are easy to get to/and from the race site.

We want to stick to stock bodies for the stock class. We have extras here that you can use if you would like but want to keep STK as stock as possible. I hope you understand.

Hi Russ. Wanted to say, i agree with you on trying to keep the stock class as close to stock as possible.
My question is.......for "STOCK" class, why run speedy 07 etc...?? With a 2.4 board and good batts and a speedy, its not stock. Since your just teching motors anyway (not hand outs), why not run the PN 70T stock motor? Then you would have more of a "stock" class. Your not going to have hand outs, which is fine, so run the 70T.;):)

Mike Keely
2009.09.10, 09:08 PM
I don't want to run a 70 turn motor if other guys will be running 50 turn motors in the same class. If they make it that only 70 turns are legal then that will be fine by me.
I only have one car so if a X Speed is legal in both classes then I will run both classes with the one car. If I have to switch motors I will never have enough time to do that with the same car.

Mike, no problem. All we are suggesting to Russ is, 70T only in stock class. The decision is up to him.
It is clear that most people are now running 70T, and this debate is not new.
So, as a late game change I will say that the 70T motor (with any PCB) is the spec for stock. I will update the reg form and website but please spread the word. 70T for stock.
If you don't have a 70T then maybe we can work something out during the race. It is all about the fun and charity so I don't want to worry too much about the rules. Besides, it will be obvious if someone has a sleeper in the STK class.
Thanks everyone for your support and patience.

Right. This is a stand alone event and we will not have any parts there for sale. Bring your own or rely on other drivers.
Regarding the 70T, I think it made sense given the existing race setups. I know Keely will need a 70T and a couple of others as well so if you have spares please bring them, they will get used.

I know that this is off topic but I spoke to Russ this last weekend. He said that he has a shop set up now ready for us to run races at if we wanted but he did not have someone to run the races if he opened it up for us. I know that I will be the first one to throw up my hand and say that I can run some races. I ran the races at Mimi's for a couple of years. I think that we need to communicate with Russ what we the racers are willing to do. If you guys want to start another thread it is up to you. Russ please let me know if this is correct.
I know that I would love to race these every weekend in the winter. Maybe start up our own points series. Thanks MK

Despain in my opinion has taken over the role vacated years ago by the great Cris Economacki as the dean of American and World Motorsports. I first saw Despain in the early to mid eighties on what was then the Super Station WTBS out of Atlanta. The show was a Saturday afternoon weekly that covered all forms of Motorsports. The show was Motorweek Illustrated. A large number of the legitimate Motorsports broadcasters that we recognize today got their starts as field contributers and on screen personalities with that show. The growth and popularity of NASCAR and the ensuing flood of copy cats eventually killed the show. Despain is one of the greats and has soldiered on in various roles up to the current production. Wind Tunnel. I would bet that if you put together a well edited clip of the ALS race he would put it on the air. Despite the dimunitive size what we do is racing at a level that not all can achieve. Much like full scale racing.

YES on the handicap access.
Tables and chairs will be provided along with power. However, please bring a pit towel.
The hotels I suggest are in the order of cost and location:
Courtyard by Marriott Fort Meade at National Business Park (good location and cost)
Hilton Garden Inn Arundel Mills/Baltimore (good location and cost)
Aloft Arundel Mills (good location and cost)
Element Arundel Mills (good location but costs more)
Microtel Inn & Suites BWI Airport (cheaper but not as close)
If for some strange reason all of these are booked or too expensive you can find your brand of choice at the BWI Airport. Most of those will still be affordable and at a managable distance to the race.
Thanks,

Just curious... What motor are you planning to run in F1? (goes out to everyone who is participating in the class). I threw an old ATM Standard in mine last night and it transformed my usually docile runner into an out of control lawn dart. I can drive it but I don't want to be a menace out there with this mini plastic ICBM.
I may go back to a Speedy 07, but I'm just curious if anyone else running the class is planning to go for broke (and I stress the word "broke";)) with as much speed as possible.

I'm planning on going for broke, atleast at first. I put a 33t in one of my F1's but I havent even driven the car yet. Basically I'm going to see how it performs the day of the race and make some quick decisions then. Speedy 07 is my next pick. The only reason I am doing this is because someone earlier in this thread asked if the guys from DC have any fast motor, to be honest I think I'm making a bad choice but we'll see what happens. The 33t is very smooth so with a few changes to the radio setting I might be able to drive it.:p

MOD Drivers.
Just in...
Inside Line Racing will be providing a $200 stipend:eek: for the winner of the ALS Charity Race MOD category. The $200 will be offered to the winner of the MOD A Main to travel to California in January for their Tekin Race. If you are Right Coast Minded, Inside Line Racing (www.insidelineracing.com) is one of the, if not THE, largest MiniZ track on the West Coast. They have regularly hosted Atomic and PN Racing Championship events. Don't pass up this great chance to race against the best.
Good luck,

Special Thanks to ILR for this premium.

Eugene, im with you. I dont drive mod much. Not really my strong point but ill have fun with it.:)
The main differences between stock and mod; in stock you search for corner speed, mod you search for grip to get the power down which reduces corner speed a bit. Both use different types of setups. Usually mod has a softer rear end. I am planning to throw a mod motor onto a stock setup and see how it feels at the track..
How much grip does this track have? How much use has it had?

Usually mod has a softer rear end. I am planning to throw a mod motor onto a stock setup and see how it feels at the track..
How much grip does this track have? How much use has it had?
The RCP track that we use is about 3 years old but only consistent use for 2 years. This past year it spent most of its life in boxes.
We'll sweep it to make sure any dust is removed and the "nap" is brought up. Grip is usually solid but I have never run a Mod on it, ever.

Running a vacume over it helps alot to get more grip.

I always vacuum with a spinning bristle, typical house upright. I have it on "wood floor" setting. It works perfectly, but the key is to keep it moving at all times! If you leave it running on the track as you go to unplug it, you will get a mark on the surface.

Most of the police close to Ft. Meade/NSA are not going to get you unless your REALLY flying by. They are out there for force protection and not running radar. Generally you can identify them because they are sitting there with their lights flashing.

Depends on the road and where on it you are. Around where the race is most will be between 30-50. But typically people do ~10 higher than whatever is posted at minimum.

I'm really sad I couldn't be there. Maya and her brother had a childhood friend pass away they have known since elementary school (unexpectedly at only age 20 due to a blood clot lodging in his brain) and as it turns out I forgot some of my race stuff at my moms house anyways. Man, finally made it home after getting everything cleaned up. Long day for all.
Thank you all for coming. I know everyone left with something and all had a good time. We met our goal of $3000 for ALS which in the face of this economy is incredible. Having everyone come from miles away really made this that much special a great mix of drivers who would not have otherwise raced each other.
The NYC and NC guys are good. They all did well and kept our local boys honest (NoVA guys included). The ole' DOW crew - I love seeing you guys, your're like old friends.
Special thanks to Ray for helping out on setup, Jeremy McHenry for teardown, and all the sponsors and drivers who contributed so much.
I can't think it possible to expect next year's race to be even bigger but I would have to set the bar higher, its just what we do. So all you guys out there who couldn't make it we'll be posting next year's date as soon as possible. This time I will work with a local hotel to get reduced rates for you out of town guys.
Given the turnout of this event I will make it a point to update our webpage with pics and possibly video soon.
Next time guys I promise to turn the AC on earlier as well as allowing for some overflow pit areas for more room.
THANK YOU ALL.

Thank you for hosting the event. It was great to know that we werent just racing on the track for a win, but for a greater cause as well.
The only NYC drivers were me and Stu :p 3 others were NJ and one Long Island... We are very lucky in NYC to be surrounded by 5 Mini-Z tracks, 3 being full competition size locations. Each track has its own feel and setup, but it allows us to accommodate for different grip and track conditions relatively easily. My mod 2wd I did not touch besides putting newer front tires on (same AW40 tire that I use at home).
AWD I had to go to PN 6d in the rear (I am out of my favorite ATM 8d radial). Kyosho 20d radials did not work very well on the ALS track. I couldnt get them to hook up, but at home at all of the tracks they are the highest grip tire. Besides that and a motor/gear change, there was little change. I broke the rear left knuckle (kyosho 1.5) in practice before the first qualifier, I installed alloy 3Racing 1d units. Worked well, but needed thicker grease for dampening.
My F1 is destroyed. That was the most difficult car to drive in the mains. It was good in the beginning, until I hit a board and broke the front bumper. It started to drag on the track and make the car very loose. Which led to more crashes and conservative driving.
I was happy to finish on the podium in all classes, that was my primary goal of the event. Secondary goal was to get a win in one. My best shot would have been AWD, but I lost power a few minutes into the race. I dont know where it came from, I have stock fets and was using an ATM T2. The fet may not have been good enough. F1 I use ATM Standard Race USA motor, and mod I used the ATM Standard BB motor.
Great event, I am glad that I attended. Especially since I wont be able to attend the PN or ATM world championships. This race kind of took their place.

Awesome event as always! Huge thanks to the NCRC crew... always doing their best to make sure this event is strong on the East Coast scene! Russ and crew all take the time to make sure things run smooth. Even with all the Core glitches (I blame the USB cord length), we still got our runs in and did it in a timely manner. We even got 3 Heats in this year! Great job!
Racing was great, worked my way from last up to second in the A (so I've been told) and then got "collected" a few times towards the end. It was rough but after the raffle, I could have cared less about my positions in the races. :D
Keely just did a fantastic job with my borrowed car in Stock and I did a pretty good job with my borrowed LF Technologies sponsored ride. Davey G and Maj were flying as always, though I think Maj had a break in the Main and had to drop out. Mod was a good race to watch, I think everyone really started getting used to the layout towards the end of it.
The Grudge match was too much fun, I grabbed my Stock car for it and tried to take out some M18s... didn't work but it was really cool having Mike Gee chase me around once I got the radio tuned up a bit. I'm fairly certain if one of the top drivers were in that race, it may have gone differently. We'll have to do it again next year!
The layout was certainly different from what most of us run on. It was incredibly high speed with some well place tight spots. It was tough to get a setup on this track but it seemed like the PN tires were working for most of us. My Mod car was fine but I was the problem, I just couldn't seem to get it set up into the corners where I wanted it due to all the speed.
Some of us had bind issues too... not sure if it was the WiFi in the place, but once I started up my cars in the pits, the problem went away.
I feel I do owe Matt an apology though because I did bash him a few times in the F1 race as I was trying to figure out Jeremy's F1. My F1 was nightmarish all day... I didn't get into a single heat for more than maybe 5 laps.
So... awesome event, incredible prizes, extremely friendly racers and another amazing fight against a terrible disease! I hope more attend this race in the coming years so they can all see how perfectly this all comes together in the long run!

This race pushed me to order a mini 96 guys, I gotta start catching up to all of you and once a month is hardly cutting it :)
I love the shifter trophies. If you want to step them up next year, put them in gear for the positions... First place, first gear, 2nd place; 2nd gear... ;)
I learned a lot about 1/18th scale racing. It was a good experience having them on the track at the same event. In practice on Friday, my F1 got hit hard after I hit a wall (I was at fault for the collision). It seriously tweaked the car, and bent the front bumper and broke the wings. I stayed up most of the night (slept 15 minutes) working on the F1 and a bit on the AWD (changed motor and gearing). The car was almost back to normal by the time the races started. I glued together the wings, but that didnt last. I dont remember if it was the 2nd run or the first when they shattered off and I finished with a crippled looking (and feeling) car. I had brought 2 backup cars, that I used for some parts... I had borrowed some crucial suspension parts for my main car. In the main I got off to a good start, and was running some clean laps, the car felt nearly perfect... After scraping the wall on the back straight, my bumper cracked and started dragging on the track. My transponder came loose, and started hitting the front wheels... It was the most difficult race that I have driven to keep the car going straight and not spin out in the turns. I had to feel the car out a little, crashed a lot... lost a couple positions, but tried to run as clean as I could. I tried to be cautious when passing traffic, and hold off until I had a lot of room to make the pass.
My MR015 Murc in 2wd mod was my best feeling car. When I put it down in practice with no setup changes, it felt good, but pushed a bit too much. With a front tire change the car felt well balanced. Using an ATM Standard BB motor, I had enough speed, but could run consistant laps. On a tighter layout I may have opted for a faster motor, but this layout maintained speed well, and I didnt want to have too much top end where I had to slow for the sweepers, I wanted to be able to stay on throttle through the outside of the track and carry as much speed through the infield.
Towards the beginning of the main, I two wheeled around the top right sweeper, and lost a rear tire since I didnt have them glued down, it was quickly replaced by a marshall (think it was Matt)... I lost about 10 seconds or so, and got back in and drove as hard as I could to make back the time. There was no way that I could catch Davey G unless he had a problem, but I just wanted to have fun and push my 015 to the limit. Moral of that story... glue your tires :p I usually do. I was using ATM 8d rears that normally stay well on the wheels when new, but they werent new...
At the start of AWD mod, I got off well, and had good pace. Lots of power, and the car felt great. Midway through the race I felt like I was driving a 70t car, I lost a lot of power. Dont know if it was the cells, fets, motor or something binding in the drivetrain. I tried to match the gearing of the car with a T2 to the Speedy 07 that it replaced during practice. I wanted top speed to be about the same. After the slowdown, I had to try to capitalize on the corner speed, and lost a lot of ground. Bill and Junior caught up and we all traded positions a few times... It was the most exciting race of the day for me.
What was very difficult for me, is that my mains were all back to back. I only had a couple minutes break between races. It took a little time to adjust to each car...

Can't say enough about the event, the racers and the good times.
Once again I walked away with a ton of cool prizes and great memories. It was great to meet a bunch of new people and hang out with old friends.
Although I did not run as well as hoped I did show some improvement from last years race. Sorry to anyone who may have fallen victim to my superior driving skills. Larry thanks for not coming down on me when I slammed into you on the timing line.
On a side note. I experienced some strange 2.4 issues on occasion as well as some others. I can't help but wonder if maybe there was some conflict between the DSM frequencies and the ASF frequencies. Not that it matters, just a thought.

I too had a pretty terrific time at this event. I performed at my usual lackluster level and managed to be the jam car on more than one occaison. I apoligize. I'm old.
My favorite part of these events is seeing the acquaintences that are becoming friends through repeated meetings like Matt, Jeramy, Larry, Ed, Ray and the new faces to names like Dave the gasman, Maj, Davey G, Eugene, Russ, Igor and my new hero Stuey.
This event will go on the list of must attend again in 10. I will start now trying to acquire meaningful items for give aways and raffle drawings. If we all work at it a little to help Russ and the group then next year the amount raised for ALS will exceed their expectations.
Thanks to all for a great weekend.

Mike,
It was nice to have you guys come up. We look forward to 2010 and I appreciate you donating the M18 kit.
I dare say we will target another growth year in 2010.
Like I always say: Great racing, great group of guys, and a great cause.

I had a great time this past weekend meeting new people as well as putting faces to screen names. What I was most impressed with was the thriving attendance in mini z's. I really thought that 18th scale would have been the bigger turnout. Thanks to all that were warm and welcoming. I will definitely be back next year. See you soon!
