Looking good man. I can't wait to bring myself to buy another PN 90mm MM to better my 03, but until then the reflex bearings should help it a great deal.

Thats a Lexan copy of the 350, right?

The MRCG is at Inside Line Racing so I've got the 03 and AWD left to play with. :) Here's the 03.

http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/8042/img0496k.jpg

http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/7057/img0495x.jpg

Small tires + lots of shims + PN front body mount and rear pod + new PN knuckles = finally, a low enough ride height.

My setup was completely off for the low grip up at Inside Line (white springs? #6 T-plate?!), and those green batteries don't help, but the 03 still turns very decent laps despite my complete negligence. :o Btw, the green batteries are ProTek 1000mAh AAA's: don't buy them for racing, they'll make your Speedy07 car slower than a PN70 car with half-decent batteries. (They'll last forever in your TV remote...)

The GT-R drives very smoothly. It rotates much faster than I expected, considering it weighs 44g. The +2 wheels up front aren't ideal for racing, but they do get rid of traction rolling completely; a temporary solution till Reflex cooks up a WTFv3 or something for the 03. I'll put the GT-R through the color0 weight-loss program soon, something like 38g should be fine for stock racing now since the 03 is several grams lighter than the 02. :)

Hi.
The chrome Reflex stickers are bought from reflex Racing.
The black ones I have made myself, along with the QteQ and Kyosho stickers.

The wing is also home made. I made myself a little "setup" to make these wings. Cutting and imprinting the bends.
I made a few hundred with different flap sizes, and sell them at our track. The money goes for track maintenance etc.
They are made of thin lexan. Very durable and light.

The wing posts are "clinchers"/ rivets for securing europlugs on electronic assemblys/ pcb's. (I work with electronics). I have them in different heights. They cost around 2 USD for 1000 pcs I think

A complete wing with paint, standoffs and screws weigh around 1,5 gram.

Hi Traveler

Just upload your picture like you normaly do, then click of one to view, then copy and paste the link, then add "" at the beginning of the link and then add ".jpg" at the end of the link.

Without the quotes but on the end of the link include the period and the / in ".jpg[/IMG]"

In short if you do it correctly, you should get this:D (you may want to reduce the resolution of your pictures to make them fit better)

Well for Xmas, the only thing I wanted was a MR03.. My local dealer didn't have any left, so I had to wait, anywho, found one at bleedingedgeracing (btw Matt's service is superb), and went ahead and ordered som stuff, Matt didn't have it all, so I guess I ordered some parts from cargel.se, reflexracing.net and technicalrp.de.

Now, I've always been driving an AWD, so it's my first 2WD chassis.. I had the transmitter, my ol' trusted EX10, so all I needed was a 2.4 GHz module.

Stock (as wee all love it! :D)

http://img63.imageshack.us/img63/6456/40673994.th.jpg (http://img63.imageshack.us/i/40673994.jpg/)

After some initial problems with the stock chassis, I decided to get rid of some front-end binding and some steeringnoice. Also started to completely take it apart..

http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/750/58609738.th.jpg (http://img13.imageshack.us/i/58609738.jpg/)

Found some parts..

http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/5719/18933908.th.jpg (http://img51.imageshack.us/i/18933908.jpg/)

Put it together and woila..

http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/6296/91740655.th.jpg (http://img20.imageshack.us/i/91740655.jpg/)

http://img63.imageshack.us/img63/7994/29291707.th.jpg (http://img63.imageshack.us/i/29291707.jpg/)

I've always been a sucker for the Enzo, also you might notice the center spring pointing quite a lot downwards.. I don't guess that's normal, will figure it out eventually.. There's a small gyro in there, don't know if it works or not, but surely it was a nice $40 add-on!.. Also the QteK parts weren't installed, the PN ceramic diff I bought (should have been used as parts), came with d-cut pressureplates! (yay! that'll teach me to research).

Next thing is the frontend parts, as it actually happend, technicalrp didn't have the parts listed, but now they do!, and then some reflex light-weight pressureplates.

Will make a followup post some other day with the new parts.

Thanks for looking..

It looks like your DDS is installed fine, but where the front of the top shock is mounted is totally jacked. I can't tell by the photo exactly what is wrong, but it is def the front that is the problem.

Other than that the car looks nice, congrats :)

Heres a few pictures of my MR03.

That motor mount is pretty cool looking. How do you adjust the gear mesh?

Ronac
2010.01.16, 01:44 PM
The mesh is adjusted by loosening the screw and adjusting the arm that the orange idler gear is attached to. The point of this motor mount is to reverse the rotation of the motor which will increase the rearward weight transfer under acceleration.

Felix2010
2010.01.18, 02:40 PM
Ronac - This type of innovation is what I love about RC racing. Tuning and maximizing performance - That's what I try to do. I am not quite sure I understand the way your motor mount increases rearward weight transfer under acceleration. Could you explain further please? Also, doesn't the motor's pinion rotation spin counter-clockwise to move the car forward? This is the same as how the "normal" MR02/MR03 motor mounts work - With the motor pinion on the passenger side as with regular pods, the motor must spin counter-clockwise to accelerate forward. Or am I missing the point of your design. I am definitely interested in hearing more about your motor pod design.
Thank you!:D

Ronac
2010.01.18, 03:29 PM
By switching the gears to the driver side, one would have to reverse the polarity of the motor. By added an idler gear in between the pinion and spur, they would have to reverse the polarity again. Since my motor mount does both, its reversed twice which means there needs to be no change in the wiring of the motor.

Have a read about the sidewinder layout for slotcars:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidewinder_(slot_car)

The purpose of the idler gear is to change the direction of the motor rotation relative to the chassis. If we look at the car from the passenger side, the conventional motor mount has the motor spinning counter clockwise. With this motor mount, the motor spins clockwise. The reaction moment/torque from the motor (which is opposite of the motor direction) now contributes to rearward weight transfer rather than forward weight transfer. Since one direction biases forward and one biases rearwards, the total change can be up to 15-20% in load on the rear wheels depending on the torque of the motor and gearing being used.

Do I finally see a narrow front end? :D

EMU
2010.01.19, 05:54 PM
Yep, its narrow. I got it wide, and switched it to narrow to suit the narrow class that we run. We can use any chassis, with a narrow configuration. Stock MR015, MR015 width MR02, Narrow MR03, and AWD with less than 2mm offset, all cars have to use 70t.

Fastest lap of the night last race was my AWD with ATM Stock BB/Porsche GT1 body, which turned a 9.94, and the car above turned a 10.14 with a 70t. Which was the fastest lap in class by more than .5s, and 3rd fastest lap in all classes... Not even a hint of traction roll...

Skv012a
2010.01.19, 11:35 PM
No roll I'd attribute to body and slow motor, so sounds like 03 is doing its job hella better than 15 used to.

Felix2010
2010.01.20, 01:37 AM
The purpose of the idler gear is to change the direction of the motor rotation relative to the chassis. If we look at the car from the passenger side, the conventional motor mount has the motor spinning counter clockwise. With this motor mount, the motor spins clockwise. The reaction moment/torque from the motor (which is opposite of the motor direction) now contributes to rearward weight transfer rather than forward weight transfer. Since one direction biases forward and one biases rearwards, the total change can be up to 15-20% in load on the rear wheels depending on the torque of the motor and gearing being used.

I understand what you mean about if the motor pinion drives the differential spur gear on the driver's side of the car, then to get forward motion the motor must spin clockwise rather than counterclockwise (Passenger side, standard motor config). But by introducing the "idler gear" to your design, aren't you reversing the rotation of the motor back to counterclockwise in order to get forward rotation for the car? In other words, wouldn't you achieve the wanted rotation result from not having the idler gear?

Sorry if I misunderstand, but I am confused because if you want the rotation of the motor's armature to spin towards the rear axle in clock-wise fashion, you would only need the "Idler gear" when mounting the motor with the pinion on the standard side (passenger side).

I really like innovation and proprietary homegrown ideas and parts. Keep 'em coming:D

color01
2010.01.20, 05:58 AM
From the motor perspective, yes things are still going the same way, but when you hit the throttle, the motor torque will serve to tilt the rear pod backwards instead of forwards, which is what a normal gearing setup will do. Hitting the throttle with his prototype pod will take weight off the front wheels and shift it to the back.

It's an interesting idea, although I have no idea what kind of performance change it'll bring (other than a marginal decrease in drivetrain efficiency). You get more on-power traction at the expense of a looser rear end off-power, so it may be a good thing depending on driver and track.

Ronac
2010.01.20, 11:18 AM
I started a new thread on my motor mount here:

http://mini-zracer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33570

Felix, to answer your question about the direction, have a look at the car from the left side. On a regular car, the wheels rotate CCW and the motor rotation is CW. With the rotation of the motor being CW, the reaction torque will be opposite of that which is CCW. A CCW torque will transfer weight to the front.

On my motor mount, looking from the left side again, the wheels rotate CCW. Obviously that doesn't change. However, with the idler gear in place, the motor will spin CCW instead of CW. Which in turn means the reaction torque will be CW and transfer weight to the rear under acceleration.

Hopefully that didn't confuse you more.... Feel free to ask any more questions. I guess just do so in the other thread and we'll stop hijacking this one ;)

Color, at our track, we tend to like to use the smooth side of rcp (less grip). We also like to set most corners up to be sweepers and try to avoid tight hairpins. I designed this mount with on power sweepers in mind because I was having troubles with putting power down with a mod motor. I agree that there will be increased drivetrain losses but with the case of mini z's, its easy to get a really powerful motor to overcome increased losses that but finding traction is the problem.

Felix2010

I switched the NSX body to the FD, that NSX is just too sexy to drive, and here's my new RWD drifter.

Looks like It has more grip then expected on that wood floor(what tires are you using). That Gyro is keeping that rear end plated :D. Do you have driff tires on front and back? Also, if you have an ICS programmer you may need to adjust the gyro setting to let the rear end get lose a little easier

Yea, I do have different tires on the front and rear, it have more grip at the rear, I'm planning on trying some 30° or 40° tires. I do not have the ICS programmer though. Here's what I have on my MR-03 so far.

-Kyosho Mini-Z SP Stainless King Pin Ball
-Kyosho Mini-Z Front Spring Set
-Kyosho Mini-Z Color Nylon Nuts - Black
-Kyosho Mini-Z Gyro Unit
-Kyosho Mini-Z ASC narrow tires - front
-Kyosho Mini-Z Radial Tire (11mm) - 20° - rear
-PN Mini-Z Ball Bearing
-PN Mini-Z Light Weight 64 Pitch Ceramic Ball Diff Set
-PN Mini-Z MM LCG 94-98mm Motor Mount V2

20 deg Kyosho tires have to much grip I would either go with drif tires or go with 50 deg front and back (tires from ASC bodies front and back) and see how the giro handles that loose set up.

Good luck and have fun :D

Dr. K -- I'd definitely go with the 50deg tires too, you're going too fast to control yourself. :) If you need to reduce grip even more you can groove the rear tires. That usually works on hard rubber compounds (the rubber doesn't flex enough to increase grip).

Drift tires or scotch tape in the front all the way. It's hard to get more angle without reducing front grip.

Im sure he wouldn't mind. Our set-up are very close but im running kyosho yellow 02 springs with some external preload and 1 degree camber. The dampner system is almost the same, but im running different roll center in my car.
What ever you do, DO NOT CUT THE BATTERY CLIPS LIKE MINE !! The battery will some loose in case of an impact. I was hoping this idea would work since it worked well on the MR-02 chassis when I did this to all my MR-02 chassis back in 2005. The MR-03 chassis is alot narrower and the bottom of the chassis is sliced like swiss cheese on the bottom to accomodate more flex. So, in turn, the cut battery clips would be non-functional. Goodluck Felix.

Roger, my 94mm-WB 03 setup mirrors both TJ's and yours, except for:
-I am running the standard Kyosho front suspension geometry and parts, and;
-I am running with slight roll-center differences just as you said.
Great setup! TJ's tuning tips are excellent. For anyone who hasn't checked out TJ's blog & tips sections on FPR's website they're a must read. Be sure to check both TJ's "blog" and TJ's "Tuning Tips" since they both contain different articles:)

About the battery clips, yes I know about the batteries coming loose after shortening the side clips . I only cut-down one of my two sets of clips. But thank you for the heads-up, it is a good recommendation to everyone on here. You make a good point about the 03 chassis. I never really thought about how much more flex the 03 chassis has.

I don't mind low but I can't get the wheels to turn when I put the car down:mad: Maybe I just got a bad body. The clips can't be mounted any lover. Oh well.

Thanks for the compliment Ocean :). I encountered this with my first 360 body. There are afew things you can do:

1) Buy the PN racing front body clip set. It's totally adjustable where you can raise or lower the body by using the plastic shims they provide. I use my own shims for this application.

2) You can also raise the front end of your car by removing the lower shims on your MR03. From the factory, there should be one shim below and one shim above the steering knuckle. Just move the lower shim to the top and this will give you a " little " more ride height.

Also, you have to consider the condition of your tires. When I use new tires, the ride height is pretty high. The more you drive your ride, the tire diameter decreases causing your car to be lower than it was before.

Hope this helps.

@ Ryan: Nice paint !! Yups, that's Lex's colors. Im sure he wouldn't mind :)

Hey Thomas (ocean),

I never had problems with two of my 360 bodies. Then again, Ryan (dorifto) hack the living crap out of it :) but it works perfectly fine for me. I still use stock clips on both F430/360 but not for long. I will soon be converting to PN CF clip.

Hi,
I've been lurking around here for a while now, and I love the site, everyone is helpful to each other and there is a great atmosphere. Anyways, I was wondering as to why some people are running the different front suspension system from stock mr-03, what are the benefits? Does this mod make the
MR-03 suspension more like that of the MR-02? Sorry if someone already asked this question, it would be great to know, as it is bugging me:D

Hi Ryan,
There's a thread about this, but basically moviing the springs from the center to the tops of the suspension arm has 3 key advantages, for me anyway:

1. Eliminating suspension arm flex as a possible factor.

2. The ability to use my old spring sets from my MR02

3. Faster spring changes without removing the arms or the front plate.

I also think the response is a little better. That said, I have also noticed a fair amount of play between the suspension arms and the chasis part the threaded pin goes through. I think the centrally mounted springs may miniimize this play in the arms. I'm looking forward to the aftermarket arms and chasis parts to see if I can fix this, but I don't think I'll go back to the springs in the middle.

Despite PN officially saying you can't use their replacement black Delrin balls (intended for the alu arms) in the stock Kyosho arms, I found out that they work perfectly fine, and in fact, complement the PN knuckles to lower the car a full mm.

Now I'm just waiting on PN's or Reflex's tower bar and Kyosho's cambered arms... :)

No I had to modify
1.) I had to cut of the stearing pin because its pointing up on the MR02
2.) Then I had to drill a small hole (not easy only 1,5mm)
3.) Then I used the the Upper arm pin and screwed on
4.) I used a scrinking tube because the arm pin is to small

I did this half a year ago and it still hold and work great.
You can also see i had to widen the holes in the aluminium.

With the lower plates out now, changing springs

If I might make some suggestions;

1. It appears that you have your DDS set a bit high in relation to the post and it's causing a bend of the plate (or I'm seeing things). You should have no flex in the plate, as far as i know.

2. You could probably step up a pinion or two on your 70Turn motor...it's got plenty of torque and could handle a higher pinion and stay relatively cool.

Otherwise its a sharp looking beast. Hope you enjoy it.

A bend of which plate? and thats the highest tooth pinion I have from my chassis set. I havent recieved my new differential yet with comes with 9-14t
Thanks!

A bend of which plate?

topmost plate... from the top, it is in the 2nd and 3rd pic you posted ...

should be parallel to the ground...

adjust the height using the two screws in the back (see bottom pic above)
compared to the 2nd pic you posted, it seems that you have only one screw.

hope this helps :D

Its higher up because I had to adjust the bottom plate so it wouldnt hit the motor. Also, on my DDS, it came with only a spring under the disks, should there be another above it?

Nice. Is that R246 pod heavy? Looks like they cut out
abit of heft and thinned it out to make it lighter.

Thanks parts, it doesn't seem heavy. But one thing I don't like about it, is that the 2 plates that hold the motor in place. The slot is a little tight for any after market motors, it only fit perfect with the stock motor.

@dr.k - cool pics... what's are those two connectors for? life batts?
Thanks herman, and yes those plugs are for the Li-Fe batteries.

On the 90mm mount, the piece that the damper post mounts to should be attached to the front posts, so it doesnt hit the motor. You have it mounted to the rear posts on the chassis. There should be a spring above the top disc, and below the bottom disc.

Yup, I charge them the same way as I charge Li-Po. They are a LOT faster than the nimh. When I run the Li-Fe batteries, I don't use any battery clip, R246 made alum battery clips for them, the stock battery clips will also fit if you trim them down.

Just tracking the evolution of my car, I suppose...

http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/9233/img0324tb.jpg

This front is (in retrospect...) a little too rich for me, but I definitely can't deny that it works. Adjustability is a wonderful thing and the new reverse kingpins allow the use of shims in odd places without introducing extra friction. I'm on the highest caster setting I can get (1.8 degrees?) and have two shims between the upper arm ball and the knuckle, and three more plus a blue PN shim under the knuckle. I had some traction rolling issues at Kenon, I imagine I should find a way soon to get some of my spring preload back, and raise my roll center. That, and I wish the PN lower arm could've given me an extra 1-2 degrees of caster. The MR-03's servo response is good, so we can finally start using the suspension properly to optimize corner speed.

I do wonder which method of adjusting camber is better, moving the arms in (Reflex) or changing the arm length (PN). I don't need to play with camber too often, but it'd be nice to know...

http://img541.imageshack.us/img541/7836/img0325ko.jpg

The rear end seems pretty easy to dial in now that I've figured out the expensive machinery. I've got the side shocks laid all the way down now with the motor wires barely clearing, and kept the PN top shock. I know some people have forgone the PN top shock for something lighter or oil filled, but I do like my spring choices with this shock. Side shocks still hold 3racing AWD springs... pretty decent roll stiffness, not too stiff (paired with Reflex MM T-plate underneath) but very linear, I like the feel. I've currently got 7000cst silicone in all three shocks. I had no idea what the right setup would be for Kenon, but that seems to do the trick just fine. My rear axle is exactly where I want it to be, all the time, whether that be locked in or drifting out. For a little more on-power rotation I put in the purple spring just before going to Gyro Hobbies.

http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/158/img0327io.jpg

Also, broke my rear spoiler.

http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/2356/img0328ke.jpg

Just running around without it for now, drove just dandy at the slower, tighter Gyro Hobbies layout. We'll see about the high-speed tracks though. :)

Very nice as always color0:) How stiff would you compare the springs you're using for the TDS side dampers to the PN TDS + Dual Top shock springs?

Also, you said you are running the caster in the 1.8-degree position but would like more. I believe a while back I saw that TJ was using a PB blue shim for his caster adjustment spacer(0.5mm instead of 0.4mm you get using 2x0.2mm shims like PN recommends). This should give you and additional 0.45-degrees worth of caster bringing the grand total to 2.25-degrees, which at least is a little bit more...:) Hope this works, I have not verified that it does;)

Felix: I followed your/TJ's suggestion and tried putting a 0.5mm shim in the gap. Doesn't fit in my front end, there's a little bit of binding. As soon as the front end wears a bit more, I'm sure I'll be able to fit that shim for some additional caster. Thanks though!

The 3racing Black AWD springs on my car right now are in the same range of stiffness as the Dark Blue and Red springs PN produces for the side shocks. I have no durometer to provide you numbers with, but just by feel they're definitely in the ballpark. It has not crossed my mind to make them any stiffer, but I have the 3racing Silver and Gold AWD springs on hand in case I need more steering than I have.

0W all-around; up to +1N front, 0W or maybe even -1W rear. 0W may rub on the rear fender, but -1 should clear perfectly. Front is quite roomy surprisingly.

Tires on the white one are 1/24 for show, but they actually somewhat clear alright all-around.

Very curious to see how this body feels. You can say it will go head to head with the Renault Megane body.

How does the Xspeed connect to the motor mount? Did you have to drill holes?

Nope... No drilling holes. the R246 LM (98mm/102mm) motor mount design is quite unique. See herehttp://www.peakrcracing.com/R246/index.php?part_num=R246-1202

one of the least popular bodies here in hong kong. the Audi A4.
i gave the car "red eyes" to make it look more fierce :p

these two photos taken half year ago when the body was brand new, front "fins" removed as they will come off anyway.

these in-the-dark photos taken yesterday, the body is heavily beaten up after half year of racing, cannot tell from the photos, coz it's all hidden in the dark

i forgot to dust off the desk before taking the reflection photo

the wheels comes together with the tires, ridgeless rims and pre-glued foam tires.
it's a nobrand wheel sold in one of our local hobby store. really no idea what it is.

herman, i'm using a nikon D90 with micro lens, but i think a compact DC with micro mode can do the same.

^ That is the coolest mount I've ever seen, period. Got to get one soon. Thanks for the installed-pic:)

Here's what I just tried tonight: 96mm with Porsche. 2X3 AN0113 FETS and a custom-tuned LL3/TSM 30t hand pattern wind motor. This thing is crazy! A few ICS tweaks too, nothing else too special. Hope you like the pics:) I took the pics right after some track time so there's some grime & stuff. Just how I like it.
