i am very happy with this one it came out better than expected and actually looks pretty darn good!
the lower is made of 1.7mm dry carbon, braces are made of billet CNC'd delrin and the upper is made of styrene so you can paint it. i am gonna try and source out some aluminum screws . the delrin corners stick out slightly so the carbon wont stick in to the wall. it only uses 1 screw to mount to the chassis and is higher than any other bumper so there is no worry about it scraping the ground when cornering and there is plenty of room for the wheels to fully turn without trimming. its the last bumper you will ever need!
they will be ready for sale in a week and i dont plan on making a whole lot of them at the same time so if you preorder before friday you will be on the first batch. they are time consuming. price is 30.00 and will include all screws and you have an option of carbon wings are styrene (paintable) its the same price.

i will start another thread about the wheel covers!!
This is a must have!!! It looks so good, and durable. Wheel protection, as well as good styling. You could also use a lexan wing if you want to lighten the front end even more.

right now the entire car weighs right at 200g with batteries. what does your car weigh?
CristianTabush
2010.04.07, 08:39 AM
Marcus, angle the wing and mounts downward a bit, it should still be effective and perhaps a little more functional!
Minimum weigh in at events is 200g, so that is the weight that I try to keep the cars :) Looks like your right on target in the weight of these parts. . .

will the wing be secure with only the one mounting screw? Looks really good!
MantisMMA
2010.04.07, 12:26 PM
CT, i definately agree with that but id like to do some testing because to do that takes some trickery with the machine to make the post angle. temporarily i think either making a lexan "winglet" pc or adding some washers under the back of the wings to see if there is a difference.
brian, i dont see how it will fail at the back of the plate there is a "V" that also keeps it secure. if for some reason it will not i can easily make a different bottom plate with more mounting screws but i dont think it will be needed.

well i finally got to test the car and have been driving it for about an hour now, here are the results on the parts:
setup
k20r/k30cut fronts
mr03 lowdown yelow fronts
shock tower cut completely off (more on that later)
pn33t
RR/qtec diff 53t
MWX 2-3 towers
MWX front bumper
MWX wheel covers
MWX wing mount
MWX carbon rear wing
MWX double k shock system
MWX prototype "T" plate
track conditions: just layed the track down in my garage not very much grip at all and its dirty/bumpy, my stock car wont even hookup!
ok first off the bumper is FANTASTIC!! if you hit anything with it the car just brushes it off, i noticed this especially going down the longest straight where normally if you even touch the wall the car digs in and spins around, this doesnt happen anymore. car looks like a hammer head goin aorund the track!!
wheel covers: they are going to need some grind work the upper corner will dig in . im about to smooth out the corner and try again
"T" plate i dont really have anything to compare to except that this track is in the worst possible shape for an F1 especially with a mod motor. and after making some adjustments to the rear springs (pn mr03 greens, reds were too soft) i am now able to power out of turns with out fear of the back coming around and i expect this to get better with an optimal tire setup (k30 are too much, even with super hard springs in the front)
wing and wing mount: all i can say is that once i got the balance closer i was able to full throttle around the sweeper and it almost seemd that it had more rear traction as i had to let off for the next turn ie higher speed=higher grip. but i have nothing to compare to, it does look good though!!
Front towers: the car has tremendous amounts of steering in all situations and the front is VERY stiff in fact i dont have a stiffer spring to put on it. of course some of this is because of hte tires having too much grip but before i cut the grooves off it was undriveable. so i cant wait to try out some PN 15/20's. on a side note i installed some stock kyosho kingpins and they were longer than the ones that were on the car. what this did is allow some play between the tower bar and the clip and what this did is almost acted like a progressive set up! when you slowly press the front down the arm will flex a little first and then the spring! in theory that should allow the car to handle bumps without bouncing around and it does seem to act this way.
overall i like the car its becoming easy to drive and i still have lots of things to adjust over the next day or two, i cant wait to get feedback from you guys! your gonna LOVE the bumper!

I received my front and rear mantisworks wings on Friday. Here is the finished product installed on my car.
initial thoughts on the front wing. It came completely assemble and just needed to remove the existing parts to install. it was quick and painless. they quality is good and the design is great. I removed the top styrene pieces and painted them to match my body. :D
I haven't had it on the track but I can already tell I'm going to like it. It has plenty (More than the other wings and bumper) of room under the wing for clearance, I'll probably purchase some counter sunk titanium screws for the bottom just because, but that's just me, it's not really needed.
I'll follow up with a driving review of the parts if I get some track time tomorrow.

I received the front wing on Friday aswell. The first thing I noticed was the weight, it feels a little bit on the heavy side but it is very strong. I put it on the car and noticed that the front wing was just a little wider than the front track of the car(about 1mm wider) I thought it my help keep the tires from catching walls. For only having one mounting piont it is alot stonger than i thought it would be.
Once I put it on the track I immediately knew this was the front wing to use. When you are driving down the straight and glance against the wall with the front end it just slides right off, thanks to the smooth delrin blocks its like you never touched anything. Normally you would end up stuffed in the wall after a little mistake like that. After running 4-5 packs trough the car everything is holding up just fine and looks great.

I agree, I drove it for a bit on the track last night and the design is very good for function. it glances off the rails instead of grabbing and is very stable with the 1 mounting point. I didn't notice a change in weight of my car either, I'm still comeing in at 201.1 grams in full race trim w/ batteries. this is with both front and rear mantis wings. :D

Same here, the race weight stayed the same. I put the tower bars, front and rear wings and the rear wing mount on and stayed a 197.3. Its gives me a little room to add weight where needed.

Here you go guys! I took these with a camera I dont normally use so sorry for the quality of them. Of course I left the carbon there, to me it is a sin to paint over it. I am going to paint the paneels on the front wing soon, while I paint a new body for my other F1.I'm glad your are getting some good use from the body.
The arms are fairly easy to install, you just have to shave down the top of the arms a bit and cut the body. So far they have been very effective. The caster helps plant the rear of the car and with the static camber maks the suspenion feel very smooth. All I can say right now is this is the most drivable F1 I have ever had!:D

That looks incredible!! have you diriven it yet? i am finding that i may need to put some rake on the front wings or add on a gurney flap, the wing mount/wing really adds downforce at high speed! i am SOOOO glad that everyone likes this stuff! and there is more to come!

BTW Matt the spacers that i sent you for the wing mount actually make the mount stiffer which is why they are that size.

they will be 35.00 unassembled, the pix on the website (mantismma.net) are not the final version, im gonna make them a bit sleeker with smaller but more aggressive winglets. should have another one made tomorrow. they are kinda tedious to assemble, for 5.00 i will assemble it.

dimensionally what will be different between the wings?
It is good to see you got things worked out and they will
be allowed in PN World Cup races....
V1=preban wing
v2=postban wing
Will you make a v3 wing that will be just a bumper so purists can
utilize there Kyosho wings?

ok so here is some more prototype work on the V2 wing (its more of a wing than bumper now) and my R30 replica paint scheme! let me know what ya think. The more i drive the car i notice that it pushes at high speeds and that is because of the wing and wing mount doing their job, so this wing has a decent amount of downforce. this is a one off and is made of aluminum because thats all i had lying around. they will not be made of aluminum as it will bend if hit hard enough.

yes but they will not ship til the end of next week and i wont have many as i am making a bunch to take with me to the carolina cup in two weeks! and there are still a few bugs i want to change. what do you think about the design?
I really like that version 2 prototype. I think you need a little air under the wing for it to work properly. So the little gap that you have should be good. The air under the wing is what provides the downforce, not the air above it.
Your Renault scheme looks really good. Making me think about painting my newest body after a current F1 team rather than my own colors...
MantisMMA
2010.05.02, 04:32 PM
thanx! i think the wing is about a detailed as it needs to be to keep everybody happy! it doesnt deflect as good as the V1 but good enough for the more experienced drivers. maybe on a tight track use V1 and V2 on an open track? what do you think about leaving the strakes exposed? at first it concerned me but when its on the car it looks pretty good and if they were left carbon you wouldnt even really see it.
yea you should paint a car up! im doin the virgin car also for my back up car. Man Pattos place has stickers for everything!
Deflection is not my primary concern with the bumper. Keeping the car all in one piece is what really matters to me. I have had the front Kyosho bumper break a little, and drag on the track making the car nearly undriveable.
I will think about it...

Super nice!! Can't wait to get ours!!
Both cars look REALLY good. I have never dressed up an F1 to look like a real F1. It takes so much time and effort. I love the way the Virgin came out... One thing about it though, its a little dark and may blend in with the RCP, which may not be a problem for the driver, but could be a problem when working your way around traffic :p
Both are great representations of the full scale models. I noticed how smooth the Renault was, and was going to ask if you did body work. It looks really good. I have always disliked all the little pieces of bodywork slapped onto the body all over the place with the mid 2000 F1s. I like a smooth look on the cars, F1 cars should be smooth and curvy like a hot woman... I usually strip down my F1 bodies (even autoscales) to make them smooth. I think it gives better aero to the rear wing, and wont hurt a marshalls hand if they grab it the wrong way.
MantisMMA

the virgin car is my backup car (unless it works better than the R30!) it is basically a stock SP-1 with tower bars and my sideplates, it runs realy good except im getting that "inside tire spinning" thing if you push it too hard, i think it is the stock front springs causing it. besides that is it a good running car. i did a tremendous amout of bodywork to the R30 i had to hide those inboard shocks that it has. i think the current f1 cars are the best in years.

any chance to get aluminum spacers with long counter sunk screws that attach the nose cone to the front wing? i don't have this yet but it just looks like that attachment would provide so much more rigidity. i'm not the cleanest driver with f1 and i do not relish the thought of breaking a $40 wing quickly:o or does this only make impact stress worse for the v2?
Arch, I have seen both the v1 and v2 take more abuse than you can dish. The single screw mount has proven to be very sturdy, much more than I had originally anticipated.

its not needed, i have only seen one failure and it was only because the screws on the bottom were too short ( and he was hit HARD and at full speed!!). that has been taken care of. the wing does not move as long as you keep a barge board on the car (stock or mantis). it does not flex either so attaching it to the front nose wouldnt do anything except add cost to the wing!!

It should be very interesting front roll start & see what third pos. Hamilton got for them after winning my favorite Canada GP which I still got sunburn from!
its going to be tough as i am a one man show!! thats why its important that the orders/preorders come quickly so i can start producing them.

I see since I didn't know & thought it was a corporate operation. Do the best you can then in production since my F1 is just my third choice in attempt to run at PN Reg. since STK & MOD class is my main club racers.
I do have a follow up question:
On your installation description of only one screw which I can not see where on under tray chassis in comparing to Kyosho's OEM bumper which is mounted with 2 screws in the 2 front lower control arm and 2 counter sink screws to front wing?
The screw replaces the screw that you remove to change your tie rod. It is in the center... The rear of the bumper assembly is held down by the barge board. I have used this bumper for a while, and love it :) Havent had any problems yet.

Its the screw right behind of the tie rod. The screw provided is an alternate size head, so I use a different counter-sunk philips so if I need to remove the bumper, I dont have to pull a different tool out.

TKs Eugene, I see where it would be mounted. Pretty much for now I just have to use alternative front end protection until some ETA information will be available at shop.

YEA, So hopefully I will get your fine works in few days! Finally got it but decide on your V1 instead in more durability then V2 without making a mess in gluing.:(
Got to give you credit that it is strong and nothing broken in front end at brutal races.:)
Now stock rear end pod is cracked so awaits for PN Rear Pod so I can try out your T- plate.

i finally had the opportunity to order the front wing and choose the v1 as it just looks more durable.
i have to ask, why include hex head screws that are not a common size to what other manufacturers are using? i went to install my wing tonight only to realize the screws are too small for the standard 1.5mm and too big for the .9mm hex head drivers. these are the two most common sizes used by both pn and atomic. i literally do not have any other hex head drivers.
i had a major complaint about pn releasing kits without tools to install them when they were not standard size. i find myself now in the same position with this front wing.
what size driver is needed? perhaps this should be included in the 'needed to install' portion of the instructions. i'm racing f1 in the als charity race this saturday and now i have to wait and hope someone at the race has the right driver.
props for choosing hex head screws though :)

Wallmart has these keychain like things, its something like 2 for $3 and together you have most hex sizes.
I luckily have one of the appropriate sized hex keys on my leatherman. It is an imperial size, although the specific size escapes my memory at the moment.

Its either .50" or 1/16".

the proper size is .050 non metric. i use these screws because they are 2-56 which is slightly bigger/stronger than the std 2mm screws i can only get this size in aluminum SHCS. you can use std self thread screws until you find the proper size alen wrench if you like. sorry for your confusion.

i'm sure someone at the event will have a wrench unless i can find one at a hardware store friday.
if i could suggest, adding that tid bit of information to the product information would be very helpful. as my experience with the PN product, it was frustrating to finally have been able to order a highly praised product only to realize upon arrival that crucial information regarding it's assembly simply is not provided anywhere. its not much fun staring at a bunch of bits on the table with nothing to assemble them with. the bits look good though.
tools required is always helpful information to provide ;)

thanks matt. i tore through my entire box and did find a small wrench that fit! if i recall, it came from an alloy pinion set of some kind.

i am still here guys, been going through a bunch of crap with this hobby shop thing (which is not working out as planned) and the lack of anywhere to test anything in houston. i have been talking with EMU and Matt and i am going to come up with something sick for next year since apperently the floodgates have been opened up to do pretty much whatever we want to the cars!
