View Full Version : Trouble finding a body for my new SP2! Help!

Hey guys,

My local hobby shop (in Okinawa Japan) had an SP2 chassis for sale for like $190, so I picked it up.

I'm having a hard time finding a body for it though. Can't find one anywhere in Japan, and not even on the net on Ebay, or any of the Mini-Z speciality shops.

Can someone help me locate a new Ferarri 248 F1 or McClaren MP4-22 body?

Preferrably NOT the White Body type.

- Paulie

Sweet! Thanks EMU!!! Somehow, I must have missed that. I swear, I could have sworn I checked that, he he he. The local hobby shops on Okinawa are all out of stock, so I'm glad you pointed me in the right direction. Already ordered them, and a couple of spare nose pieces and wing just in case :)

While I have you here, some quick questions for the F1. I've been racing Mini-Z's for a long time, but I'm new to the F1. We race on carpet. Any set up tips?

Supposedly, the hot ticket is Kyosho 40 degree tires up front, Kyosho 20 degree tires out back. Seems like the only thing folks do to the SP2 version besides that is run green springs up front, and take out the springs in the rear. We all run the Kyosho X-Speed motor.

Of course, I plan to clean the grease out of the supplied ball bearings and lube them with oil, and maybe change the diff balls for ceramic ones, but other than that, is there much else to do for the SP2?

The front plastic knuckles are garbage. Way to much binding, and I didn't really feel like honing them out, so I picked up a set of the new Route 246 RC Planning knuckles, popped them in with a little Kyosho flourentine oil, and it's smooth as silk.

Any tips for the SP2, or F1 in general would be greatly appreciated.

I would definitely recommend rebuilding the differential out of the package. Here is a good guide. http://www.reflexracing.net/MR02_build_part_1.asp the most important step is to glue the diff rings to the plates that hold them. This will keep them from spinning, which is a big problem for the Kyosho diffs.

I have never raced on carpet, so I really cant help you much on the setup. By the sound of things, you already have it worked out well. If they are permitted at your local track, I would recommend the MantisWorx bumper, rear wing and side plates... http://shop.mantisworx.com/FORMULA-ONE-RC_c2.htm The bumper protects the front end a lot better than the stock+kyosho bumper. The side plates are considerably softer than the Kyosho carbon, and the rear wing provides more downforce... you may be able to tame the rear end enough to use a softer front tire and gain more steering without losing the rear end when you apply throttle.

Hope the information helps :)

Hi Guys! Thanks so much for promoting/supporting shop.tinyrc.com. :) Just wanted to let you know that we're getting Mantis Works parts in this week too! Be on the lookout for them in the shop asap. :)

EMU,

Those MantisWorx parts sound awesome. I just inquired about getting a set of them, so we'll see what's what.

As fro the Mantisworx bumper, how will that affect the Kyosho IC tag? We use the Kyosho timing system, and all the F1 guys use the clear bumber with build in IC tag.

I suppose I can take the tag off the clear bumper, and tape it on to the Mantisworx one, but I was just curious if there is enough material on the Mantisworx bumper to tape it to, or if it's a skeleton bumper and not solid like the Kyosho.

I do appreciate all the help. Again, the F1 is all new to me.

I'm excited because I just made the track record last night for an MR-03 and MR-015. I've been tuning the heck out of my 015 (curing traction roll issues) and got it to within .05 of my MR-03 track record lap time!

I'm curious to see how it goes with the F1's, as I hear they are supposed to be very fast.

Thanks for all of the help :)

- Paulie

hmm... even though you are in the birthplace of the mini-z, i kinda find that hard to believe... did you check out the stores on the link i posted? if you need a shop in a different area, there is a drop down window to other areas in japan...

ultimately you can get the bodies here in the shop as emu pointed out... :D as for tuning and hop ups... looks like you and emu got everything covered... hmm... doesn't the sp2 have all the hop ups available for the f-1? well except for the knuckles and springs i guess... :D

what part of okinawa are you staying? pls do post pics of your car and track... a video would of course be better... :D

Herman,

I know, it's kinda crazy, but seriously, they do not have what I need locally. I regularly visit the shops of the links you posted, and I'm a regular mail order customer at RC Champ. In fact, the owner at RC Siro (local shop here in Okinawa), used to be the manager at RC Champ in Osaka. I race in his outdoor touring car series, so I know these guys well.

Don't get me wrong, they have a TON of stuff, just not what I need at the moment, he he he.

I'll post up pics of my Mini-Z gear soon. I currently race Mini-Z's at RC Paradise. It occupies an entrie 3rd floor of a shopping center and has a big carpet Mini-Z track, and two 1/10 scale drift tracks.

The race format is probably not what you'll find elsewhere. Currently, they have 3 types of races.

1) MR-02/MR-03 chassis race. Kyosho X-Speed motors only.

2) MR-015/MA-010 AWD chassis race. Kyosho X-Speed motors only. Bodies MUST be from an AWD or 015 chassis only, OR MR-03 narrow bodies allowed. This race is very interesting because the AWD's are no doubt faster, but they eat batteries quicker, so they have to pinion down to actually finish the race (I'll explain in a minute), so it's an equalizer.

You get two 5 minute qualifiers. Battery changes are allowed. Top qualifier picks out of a hat to determine race direction before each heat (clockwise or counter-clockwise). Actual racing is three 30 lap heats, using the SAME batteries - no changing allowed. That's why the AWD'd are actually at a disadvantage, because they usually don't finish. Heck, most people don't finish, but the AWD's almost never finish.

It's a lot of fun for sure.

New starting this month is F1 racing. They are going to have a 1 hour endurance race, where you have to change a complete set of tires at least once during the race, and you have to do it yourself - no pit crew allowed. And they can't be the same set of tires - you actually have to have a second complete set.

Should be a lot of fun, and that's what made me end up getting the F1 in the first place.

The MR-02/MR-03 race is this Sunday. I'll bring my video camera and tripod and see if I can make a video of it.

:)

Hmm, I can't seem to find a link to RC Paradise either...I'm going there later tonight to test something on the 015, so I'll get it then (it's awesome that they are open until 11pm 7 day sa week!).

As far as bodies, I actually have the MP4-22 F1 White body, and have the 248 F1 White body on the way from RC Champ...

I just wanted something I didn't have to glue up so I can use right now to test with before the race, he he he.

There are a LOT of parts to glue up on the F1 White bodies...

:D

Found the link to RC Paradise...

http://www.rajiten.com/

That track is from one of the shops in mainland. RC Paradise is a franchise store, so there are many shops.

I actually found a link to the Okinawa shop, and they a race blog from my MR-03 Win!!!

Very interesting! We just did a 1 hour Enduro recently and it was a blast! It's very interesting to see similar things happening in Japan and France (http://mini-zracer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34522)! :) Definitely post vids! :D

I am also looking for a spare MP4-22 Hamilton Body set as spare and having my friend looking all over Akihabara & Tokyo but no where to be found after Kyosho America tells me that it is discontinue product. It seems F1 is not so popular so its already almost finish once sold out. Hobby shop in Akihabara is discounting so much in clearence that Original SP limited edition MP4-22 Hamilton with 2.4 GHZ for 9,800 yen! I might as well buy the who chassis instead.
