View Full Version : Need More Steering in 02

So I finally gave into the proper 02 gig after a year and a half (now that I'm willing to run a body that can squeeze the wide front end), but I'm noticing that I just can't seem to get the steering/oversteer that I want out of this thing. I've seen plenty of 03s with harder tires and springs perform closer to my liking than my 02, so I'm starting to question what I did wrong.

Setup is roughly as follows-
90mm MM Mount
Purple low-down springs, maybe .5mm droop, no preload
Longest 3racing alum spring holders
0* tie rod
0* knuckles
standard size plastic PN rims, 0N 0W
hard springs in the DDS
hard H plate
Kyo 20 radials front (glued), Kyo 20 slicks or 30 radials rear

What body are you using?

Kyosho 20's in front tend to overheat and blister, so you'll rapidly lose front grip. Try the 30 radials or PN 15's or 20's.

Kyosho 20 slick fronts are real sticky but wear quickly. Run a shorter spring cup and allow a little more dip when you turn. Of
course a sticky rear setup will create more understeer but don't sacrafice rear grip for more steering because then the car will be harder to drive.

In my sig ;)

I'll try using slicks and shorter cups. Reason for long ones is to help prevent tires catching on the body, but it may be ok with shorter cups as well.

Try a smaller diameter front wheel. When I ran the 350z, I used ATM 40 slicks, with narrow 20d radials and 70t. You can try a wide 20 radial and AW40... it should work well, but if you are limiting your suspension, and using 21.5 TS wheels, your car isnt going to get good steering. A smaller diameter front wheel will give you more steering with the same tire...

2 deg knuckles would help

I've already ruled out the atomic size-up rims, "standard size plastic PN rims, 0N 0W," since they were catching on the body (I know my sig shows them, but I swapped out for PN regular size rims on saturday and noted in 1st post). So you're saying try wide fronts, somehow? I may do that, would certainly be interesting. I've briefly tried that before and results weren't what I expected, but now the car is longer which may yield better results.

Not wide in the front, wide in the rear, with the AW40 in the front.

You can try using a smaller wheel as well. Nascar/classic wheel with standard tire is just about as low as you can go, and you have no issues with clearance on the body. The MantisWorx front wheels are inbetween the LM and standard wheels, and the offset is adjustable. Almost all of my 2wd chassis have Mantis front wheels. I usually like bodies with low clearance, and they allow me to lower the front end, at the same time adding more clearance so I can increase my suspension travel to the point that the chassis would bottom out on the track.

Since you are running at 94mm, you may want to try the low down motor adapter. It should give you a little more steering. 1.5-2d front knuckles would help with the mid to exit steering a little.

I'm still not sure you were getting enough suspension play.
