Tekin? I run all their stuff in my larger scale cars but I thought they only went down to 1/18 scale. What 1/28 scale stuff do they offer? I want it!

I think they do it to show support for the R/C car hobby in general. I don't think they have anything for 1/28.

That's interesting. I'll have to ask Randy Pike if there's any more to it than that. I'd love to run Tekin motors in my Mini-Z but it's hard for me to judge how popular Mini-Z is right now. It seems to have died down quite a bit in the last year - especially if you look at traffic on this site. I wonder why that is...

A lot of local club racers don't use forums.

2010.11.22, 01:52 AM
Oh sure, I understand that. It's not an observation of the total number of people posting to this forum, it's an observation of what seemed like a drop in frequency.

However, I've had several people on this forum tell me that they've observed that race entries are up and it seems like the hobby is growing in popularity. That's great news!

Most of the custom or kit chassis' use the Tekin B1R ESC. It is a very popular ESC and very small in size.

You dont judge a book by its cover.....
mini z is alive and well!!!
Your not looking in the right forums and or the right area of the country....
In the metro NYC area it is thriving (were im from so I know)
Alot of mini z racers have home and club tracks that dont partake in the forums.....

Yeah you're totally right. It's definitely a regional thing. I hadn't considered the impact of the recession either. It seems that things are starting to pick up again.

My observation was based on a few things. I looked in the Events section and saw a ton of events in 2009 but almost none in 2010, and 2010 is almost over. I also looked through a lot of old threads and noticed that a lot of traffic died out around the end of 2009. That said, it looks like things are picking up again.

I'm going to try and get something started in the PacNW. There doesn't seem to be any Mini-Z activity up here. We have a few great indoor offroad tracks and a vibrant 1/10 scale onroad club that rents out an old airplane hangar twice a month for some carpet racing. Considering the rain we get and the abundance of tech professionals with disposable income it seems like an ideal place for Mini-Z to flourish, exactly like it does in Silicon Valley. Maybe I just need to try to talk one of those guys into opening a franchise up here. :)

Exact number of sets to handed out has not been determined yet. The brand of batteries will be an off brand. If you are looking to practice just don't use any name brand stuff. Does this mean you are coming?

Kyosho 30 slick front and 20 slick rear work very good. If you want more front grip, Atomic slick-r 30/40* work good too. If you don't like those PN Racing 8* slick fronts (trued down) with Kyosho 20 slick rear work good, I use this combo and love it because I barely have to swap my tires out. I just put on a new set of rear tires and they instantly have grip. A few laps to break them in but I don't even true them down and I run modified. I don't think any experts use the kyosho 20* radial rears, most just use kyosho 20* slick.

Almost everyone seems to be running K20S on the rear. For the fronts, the K30S seems to be the most popular choice but a significant number of folks are running Atomic40S or PN 8S depending of setup and driving style.

Tomorrow is the last day for sign-ups. Below is the list of drivers we have signed-up so far. I am expecting a lot of racers to sign up tomorrow during our Saturday night racing. Can't wait for this event, less than a month left.

The tires that work the best right now are the Kyosho slicks, 30 front and 20 rear. For the front tires, just true them to your desired diameter and run them for a set of batteries. For the rears, no truing necessary, just run them for about five minutes and you are set.

We have rooms blocked at the Courtyard Marriott at a discounted rate for all the out-of-town racers. Please note, there is a different link for each room type. The cut-off date to reserve is on Friday, February 4, 2011.

ROOM TYPE: KING $59.00

Hahahahahahahahaha! Berni, it's not polite to stare. :p

Great racing guys and gals, I enjoyed watching the videos! Super smooth driving by everyone -- even Grant, whose Mod GT car looks like it was just on fire! New RCP looks a lot grippier than it used to be, good stuff Binh. :)

Congrats to all the winners! The level of competition is rising every year! Big thanks to the ILR crew for putting on a very smooth, well organized event. I enjoyed the race format/practices where it would go by your qualifier groups. All the same class cars on the track and you knew ahead of time when your practice was.

Congratulation Vicky for winning the Sportsman stock class! Everyone, especially the women in the house were going crazy when she won! And her paint schemes on her cars looked very nice going around the track. Keep up the good work and see you in the Expert class. Watch out Romel cour your wife is going after you ;)

I also wanted to congratulate Brandon Lin the 13 year old! This kid has been so fast at club races and im very happy to see him finally get a podium finish in a big event.

Thanks to my sponsors: PN Racing and Fast Pace Racing for all the support. All my cars were setting a few of the fast laps this weekend using PN Racing parts. Ill post my setups for GT Mod, Pan Mod and stock for those that are interested.

First of all I'd like to congrats ILR especially Binh, Chris, Steven and the whole ILR crew that make this event possible. The program went very smooth as usual and the level of competition is very high!

Also congrats to all the winners. Everybody was fast and put out clean driving the whole weekend. Special thanks to my team mates, Philip, Grant, Chad, Bill, Brian and Bob for all the help around the pit. Grant thanks also for all the stuff you helped me getting my car running good, you are on fire man! I think that was the cleanest driving I have ever seen from you both Pan and Mod GT great job Grant! I am amaze to see your consistent driving!

It was good to see all familiar faces again after half a year away from miniz scene, Ryan, Stephan, Romel and everybody else. The competition is definitely so much higher than last time I was at there. I had all sort of problems and issues with my car, I was pretty much chasing the setup the whole weekend where finally I was able to dialed my car the way I wanted it on the last main. It's all good times!

I have not had so much fun like this since my time off, and lastly, congrats to Vicky, the only lady with a podium finish, my wife kept telling me how she's thinking about playing miniz during our way back to LA..i will blame you Vicky if she's getting into miniz :D

Hehehehe.... Thanks to all and congrats to PN Team Drivers and other people that won and also to all that went to race the Tekin race @ ILR.

The Ladies and I start talking about having a PN Racing Ladies Team Drivers. I was telling them with out my Husband support and help I can't win that race. It was Romel that was doing all the work. That win is for him. I was just a driver.

I told the Ladies that let your husband and boyfriends to do the setup for you. Tell them which work and don't work on your car. Like I do with Romel. Hehehe.... It's more fun if the wife’s are getting in to it too.:D So they don't feel left out and just watching you guys race and cheering for you.

Now guys its your turn to be are cheerleaders! Will start a new year of ladies drivers and men cheerleaders!

Bihn next race we want a Trophy guy! The girls was LOL and thinking of Chad being the Trophy guy with a Daisy Duke.:D

First off I would like to thank all the out of town racers for attending our event. I know it is not easy to drop everything and make a trip to race Mini-Z. Thank you. I would also like to thank all of our local racers for their great hospitality and making our visitors feel welcomed. Big thanks to my wife Chris for keeping the front of the store going smooth so that we could play in the back. This would also not be possible without Steven and Randy, they are responsible for most of the behind the scene activities. We did a few things different this time and I hoped everyone had a good time. Setting up the track and getting things ready this past week was made possible only because the local racers helped out. We strive to make every event better than the last.

Friday practice went pretty smooth. When I arrived I had the whole PN crew waiting for me. I did not get a chance to drive at all but the times were faster than I expected, so I knew the traction was coming up quite fast. I believe that fastest time set in practice was Chad with a 7.87 lap. By the end of the day it seemed that most people were dialed and ready for racing. After practice we all went to a family restaurant for wings. Philip seemed to have the most fun.

Eight AM Saturday morning and everyone was there on time when the doors opened. We held practice by race heats which let everyone have extra time for tuning. We then had our drivers meeting which was followed by Kelly Clarkson singing our national anthem. This seemed to get the drivers revved up and ready to race.

Sportsman stock class started things off with Ezra striking the first blow throwing down the early fastest sportsman time. Round one TQ went to Ryan Crabb. After the re-sort, we had all the early fastest drivers grouped up and this time Duy took over TQ honors. Duy held on to TQ honors going into day two. In day two, Ryan took back the TQ spot going into the triple A-mains. In A1 Vicky fought her way back from a bad hole shot to take the win. In A2 Ryan took the early lead and it looked like he was going to take the win. Then on lap 25 Ryan caught a rail and Vicky jumped in the lead. She led until there were two laps remaining and caught a rail in the Crotty section and Duy was there to jump into the lead and hold on for A2. In A3, Alex took hold of the lead at lap 17 and never looked back. Vicky and Duy both had a first and second place finish, so we had to go to a tie breaker which was the combined laps and times from their best finish. By winning the tie breaker, Vicky became the 2011 Tekin 1/28th Sportsman National Champion.

In expert stock Crotty was able to take down TQ honors on the last lap of the last qualifier. This would set up the mains with Crotty in the one spot followed closely by Sagisi in the two spot. Sagisi got away in A1 and took the victory. In A2, Crotty was looking to force an A3 sudden death race however he fell three seconds short in a great battle that went down to the end. Taking care of it in two rounds, Sagisi became the 2011 Tekin 1/28th Expert Stock National Champion.

In pan car stock it was our late entries that made the big slash. Crotty took home A1 by three seconds. In A2, Nelson forced an A3 by taking the victory by two seconds. In A3, Nelson got a great hole shot and never looked back. In taking down A3, Chad Nelson became the 2011 Tekin 1/28th Pan Car Stock National Champion.

In pan car modified, Grant took home the TQ honors. Romel Tuason took home the fastest lap of the weekend with a 7.62 lap. Grant took home A1 edging out Nelson by 3 seconds. In A2, Nelson edged out Grant by three seconds. In A3, the title was still up for grabs. Grant led early on but the rest of the pack would not let him get away. Sagisi ended up taking A3 and we had to use another tie breaker to decide this year’s champion. The tie breaker was a difference of 3.9 seconds which gave the title and this year’s Tekin 1/28th Pan Car Modified National Champion to Grant Matsushima.

In Modified GT, Chad Nelson took home TQ honors. A1 honors went to Grant and this put the early pressure on the rest of the field. In A2, Grant led every lap except for the hole shot lap and went on to set the fastest race of the day with a 60 8:05. No tie breakers were used to determine this year’s Tekin 1/28th Modified GT National Champion, Grant Matsushima.

Brandon Lin deserves honorable mention. Being only 13, he was able to compete with the fastest guys of the weekend and take home second overall in Modified GT. Another honorable mention goes to our youngest competitor, Mateusz. He is only five and he was able to qualify well enough to make the sportsman stock A-main and win the Modified GT C-main.

Last but definitely not least, I would like to thank our paparazzi for taking the great pictures and videos.

Again I would like to thank everyone that was part of this event. You guys are the reason it was a success. We at ILR hope that everyone enjoyed themselves this past weekend and are asking the question, “Hey Binh, When is the next one?”.

I want to thank Binh and company for an amazing event. It was an amazing, exhausting weekend. This the biggest event I have been involved with since I got hooked on this crazy hobby last year. I learned a lot meeting and talking with everyone who traveled in from LA, New Hampshire, Seattle and more...

Even though I bit off a little more than I could chew for the weekend, it was a great experience that leaves me wanting for more. Let's see... RCX then KO then...

It was fantastic to see a few of the local racers I see every week really step up the game. Sagisi was fast and generous as always. Ray brought everything together this weekend. Brandon.. wow.. cool and steady, brought it home. Mateusz, it is very difficult to remember your age when you race like that so I am going to forget it every time we meet from now on. And Vicky... now that you are due for a bump to expert, I am going to miss racing with you... and if my wife starts racing better than me I hold you responsible!

Thanks again to Binh, Chris, Steven and Randy for putting everything together... and when do we do it again?
