I saw the link describing the use for the second com port. I gather with two decoders this means if either decoder picks up a lap, it is counted?

Would it be possible to leverage the second unit for

a. Split timing? So you could have a half lap time (I realize this will require another column in many screens)

b. Prevent double counting laps? Configure it so device #2 must be tripped for that transponder before Device #1 registers a lap again?

You are correct right now if you use a secondary lap counter any detection it has counts as a lap just like the primary.

I do plan on extending the functionality of the secondary lap counter eventually to allow things such as a speed trap and checking for rank changes throughout a track. Your idea to use it to prevent false lap detection is another good idea that had not crossed my mind.

I imagine all of us have ran into times where someone crashes at the lap detector and it takes them long enough to get going again that it falsely counts them because the time is greater than the minimum lap time setting.

Yes, and I know that I can use the software to easily merge and split laps. But I just DON'T find myself doing it. Maybe for the more important races like the 8 min HFAY race or a 10min BTE. But the club format is multiple 3-4 minute sprint races all day long.

So in regards to your first point of split timing so you have half lap times you would want to see the breakdown of partial lap times. I am curious as to why that is something you are looking for?

On a bigger layout, I think it would be cool to know what section your are improving on vs overall. My primary benefit would still be the validation to make sure i'm not doublecounting.

I have received many requests over the years for "sector timing", where the track is split into multiple parts and the times for each portion are listed along with the overall lap time.

I don't think it has much use for racing, but would be great for practice to find the fastest line through various sections.
