Finally finished the paint for my first Mini-Z airbrushing attempt. Decided to start with a simple design while I worked out the kinks. Learned, for example, that I need to thin the heck out of the paint or else I get lumpy results. :D

Painting on the outside of a shell is a lot more challenging then painting the inside as I'm accustomed to with the larger scales. However, once you get used to it, it's not that big of a deal. Using really good Tamiya masking tape is essential. Tried some of the "other" brands and their quality was horrible.

Used Tamiya acrylics for the paint. Picked up an automotive clear coat from Wesco autobody. I liked the results but it was too thick for my Iwata Kustom Micron (0.23) airbrush so I need to find a way to thin it. Also going to give the Tamiya clear a try.

Next step will be to print out some good waterslide decals for this body. Picked up some white and clear waterslide inkjet paper. Hoping I can use the white paper for printing white decals. The challenge will be precisely cutting them.

I haven't painted the front lip black yet because I can't decide if I want to race this body or display it. If I race I'll shave it off, if I display it I'll just hand paint it. I'm going to decide after I get the decals on.

Putting the finishing touches on my next body - a Lexus SC430 with a Blue Angels theme. I've been working on a HUGE project with the Blues for over a year and it will launch in March so I want to mark it with a Mini-Z tribute to them. :D

Good decals will be key with that one...

Beautiful and tasteful work, I look forward to seeing it in action Friday!

I need to talk to my 18th scale buddy who paints, he's done some simply amazing bodies. I'm sure he wouldn't mind doing a white body for me for the novelty of painting an RC body from the outside, especially if I bribe with a white body for him to keep :P

Thanks Charles. Not sure what I want to do with that body yet. Need to get the decals on next.

Here's my next project: Blue Angels-themed SC430

Just finished the last coat of Tamiya Clear. Working on decals in Adobe Illustrator next.

And per the discussion of racing modifications to bodies, I went ahead and dremeled out some material from the window insert. Is that the right amount of material to remove?

If the window piece feels solid, you can take out more -- just install the window by gluing all the edges themselves to the white plastic. The SC430's windows are definitely sturdy enough to do so. ;) Paint schemes looks great, let's see the final product!

Another thing I do to save weight on the windows is to cut the tabs off where is usually attached, and just glue it around the edges. It saves a little more weight, and gluing all the way around the edge of the windows makes the whole car sturdier anyway.

Nice pant jobs. I like the orange, but think it would look better with black, or even a silver/gunmetal. The gray looks kind of primer-ish, which gives it some what of an incomplete feel to me. Maybe the decals will remedy this :D

IIRC I saw the Blue Angels at some big air/sea show in Seattle when I was there? But that's not the first thing this body reminded me of:

Haha - yes, without the decals it is definitely more of a Michigan theme.

Trying to get these finished but struggling to get the waterside decals right. Need to find one of those dye sub printers that prints white. Using white decal paper makes it really hard to cut out the decals without white showing around the edges.

Off to EBay...
