Hello all,
This month I started a blog about my Autoscale collection.
I wanted a studio lighting so I use my trusty Nikon D800 with a micro 105 f/2.8, lighting being a sole iphone4s LED.

fantastic photos! have you thought about doing 3d rotational compilations? a new site popped up recently offering this for GI Joes (http://www.3djoes.com/). while a formal studio collection for autoscales is a first, rotational compilations would be a great asset as well.

again, great photography.

Hello and thank you dear moderator :),

Actually I take pics of each model from 8 angles but the lighting is different for each angle (I move my phone in the dark, checking the pic after each exposure, so it's changing all the time) so it would be difficult to make rotoscopic images. For this I would need a static lighting setup and a rotating plate/background.

you get a very similar effect once you click to enlarge the image and scroll through the images back and forth. absolutely wonderful!

optimaforever
2012.12.20, 10:03 AM
Btw all angles aren't always beautiful per se, so I have to find a good-looking lighting for each shot. It takes time, typically 30-40 shots by car, but once the shooting is done, I bring the pics in Lightroom to enhance the lighting and select the best pics.
When uploading, I now try to sort the shots in a rotating order to keep a certain coherence. :D

Very cool. Do you generally leave the LED near the top of the frame, pointing downwards? Really clean lighting for a single point source (and I assume no diffuser box providing secondary, indirect lighting). Please teach us. :)

As I don't want a complex studio set-up, I use a technique called light painting.
Basically, very slow shutter speed, cam on tripod in a darkened room, and a bright light moving around the subject to hilight what you want to focus on. (in my case, an iphone, but it could be a lighter, a torchlight, whatever creates a strong contrast with darkness). You can test a lot of different lightings quickly.
I use shutter speed of 6-30sec, an apertures ranging from f/22 to f/32, depending on the angle and the color of the body.

Thanks for the compliments.
I have so many bodies now, and they all are hidden in closets, so I don't see them usually... What a pity isn't it? Hence the idea of taking pics of them, to be able to see them when I want, and putting them online, so I can see them from any mobile device too, and besides, if anyone else than me would be delighted to see a (kind-of) visually uniform mini-z gallery... I always have been so frustrated by the official Kyosho website... uncomplete infos, uncomplete list, errors in the descriptions, etc. etc. I'd have loved a website explaining why Kyosho choose to make a body instead of another, how they choose the colors or liveries, short stories behind the makers, etc.

there are some pictures floating around on how they make them, the molds used and glosscoating the bodies. i recall there being at least 2 brief interviews of sorts that have occurred over the years. all of it should be here on the forum as well. i have copies of the pictures of the molds if you want them for a background page.

Actually I read from time to time the official mini-z blog but it mostly depicts the mini-z cup and this doesn't interests me :D Though this subject indeed is very interesting, the pics are sooooo small it's really a pity!

I don't understand why Kyosho publish a yearly catalog for diecast and nothing for autoscales??? They could easily publish a yearly catalog for mini-z as they did in 2005 with the small one they gave away with autoscales.

I was curious how you set up this 'studio'. Are you using a simple black project board for a base and backdrop? Are you also 'light painting' the object while having a constant light source from the top?

Also, if you have any of the JGTC supras or skylines, get a couple shots! :D Keep up the great work!

To trexflyer02:
I could stamp the antenna holes with Photoshop but instead I've decided to keep the bodies' authenticity. Otherwise there's no point shooting Mini-Z autoscales (the antenna holes are proof these are RC bodies made for AM 27MHz and therefore pre-2.4GHz era).

Yep, I can understand that. I'll try other classic wheels if I can find some that fit the Viper. Perhaps Rays CE28N in both classic and low profile.

i'm inclined to say, continue as you have been (consistency). when and if the forum VB gets updated, it's supposed to better handle image resizing which would negate the need to make or use smaller images to fit the width of the forum. it sucks to have to scroll left/right and haven't checked what it does to mobile devices but more current versions of VB have already addressed this issue.

Thanks for the comments.:)

I shoot in RAW (this is a digital photographic mode which is similar to old analog negatives that you have to develop in a darkroom; the opposite of JPG which doesn't allow many tweaks), so it allows me to enhance the shot in several ways. As I change my lighting pass (the light painting is done with an iphone hovering over the body as the camera takes a long shutter time shot) each time, there isn't a regular lighting consistency, not to mention the overal exposure quality depends also on the colour of the car (white cars allows shorter exposures but my hand moves have to be faster as well), I often end up with irregular shooting sessions (in means of lighting).

So I rely on post-production tool (Lightroom in my case) to make a more uniform shooting session(the white balance being the most crucial element here, as I don't know why, but it seems the iphone's screen casts a different color according to the viewing angle, so the WB must be checked for each pic individually).

I can remove the trails of the lighting in the background above the car, and the dust debris on the car / ground because they are a P.I.T.A. with that high a resolution (actually I think dust must be the most awful problem as I shoot in pitch black room and they are almost impossible to see naked eye).

But I can understand that you think there's some image manipulation here as I'm the first amazed by the output. In fact everything is in the lighting. I always try to choose the lighting which doesn't allow to guess easily it's a scale car. If the lighting is homogenous, you get dull pics. To get sharp highlights, I have to use a very bright light in a very dark environment, and underline only the details I want to see.

And of course, the detailing talents of Kyosho craftsmen do the rest. ;)

hi optimaforever... again nice pics... was wondering though if you experienced any clearance issues with the tires and the rear fender... http://mini-zracer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=30066&d=1276752594
sorry for pic size... that's what it looked in the autoscale case... yuck...
and this is what i did to remedy the 'look' click here (http://mini-zracer.com/forums/showthread.php?p=386341#post386341) i also noticed the same thing with the mazda bodies... but from your pics... they look good, clearance wise... what did you do?

optimaforever
2013.02.25, 08:40 AM
Hey Herman,

Actually I think all the C9 suffer from this problem.
The clearance and the tires offset issue is a headache for each Autoscale.
Usually I remove the rear damper, loose the T bar, and remove the front suspension coil springs. That's for the clearance issue.
Then for the offset, I add washers on the shafts. But here this isn't enough.
The rear clearance is too huge to get rid of it with the usual fixes.

I don't race nor drive these cars so it's not an issue for me but what I did is:
1. dismount the dummy chassis
2. remove the front body clip from the dummy chassis (2 screws)
3. mount the dummy chassis upside down (that is, with the bottom turned above)
And then the clearance becomes kind of OK.
Of course, you can't store the Autoscale in this config, because the attach gets too far from the screws on the bottom of the Autoscale box.
My purpose was just to get the clearance OK to take pictures...

No, I actually took the pics with the dummy chassis; I've unscrewed a little the T bar to get the right ground clearance for the rear wheels. It's the first time I didn't have to use a MR02-LM chassis to get the right wheels offset. Thank god, as there were 8 to do :D

PS I got a Toyota 86 today and must say I'm surprised it doesn' t need any wheel offset tweak. Good job, Kyosho!

I don't know if this was the first one but I can confirm that the first batch of readyset had to be assembled (skyline r34, impreza 22b sti, lan evo vi, etc. were sold exactly like non deco bodies with the exception that the body wasn't white but silver, yellow, red, etc. coloured plastic)

The Kyosho ads department never has been very keen on vintage stuff. Their job is to sell, not to make old guys happy
I guess the best place to get these kind of infos are personal blogs :D
I have a white impreza which is exactly like on those brochures. no decals but adhesive seals for the front grill, which made me at first suspicious it was an iwaver or firelap thing. :p
What's interesting here is that even with the very first lineup, there are different batches. My grey and blue skylines aren't similar to the early documentations, but more in line with the later Autoscales (I mean, the details are made by the mould, not adhesives).

good to mention iwaver, there are clones of the early stuff out there so you have to have a good eye to catch them. it is much easier to catch the later stuff as they moved to a single shell product vs. shell and kit. they also had odd color options that Kyosho did not offer.

I don't have any stock chassis anymore, but it's a good idea; I'll do it when I have a spare chassis of each type. I have several ones but I don't plan on getting VE, MR015 nor Limited editions though...
Here's a SMALL list of what exists so far (I probably forget a lot):
MR01 (LM and HM)
MR02 (MM - RM - HM - LM) with red limited edition, EX black edition, and several Shizuoka Fairs SP limited white, green, etc.)
MF010
Overland
MR015 (MM - RM - HM)
MA010 (transparent grey)
MA010ASF SP Limited (blue)
MA010 DWS
MR03N/MR03W (MM - RM - HM - LM) with yellow limited edition
MA015 (black)
MA015 DWS (orange limited)
MF015
MB010
MR03VE

i wouldn't bother with all the special editions, there are simply to hard to find anymore, much less in stock form. i'd be quite satisfied with the basic plain mr-01, mr-015, mr-02, mr-03, MF-01/015, MV-01, MM-01, MA-010/015. 8 is a much easier number to work with vs. trying to catalog all the chassis's and their various incarnations :p if you were domestic, i would be happy to loan items to you for photos, shipping would kill me though overseas. shame a local LHS couldn't loan product for photographing.

mr-02 red edition? i have the mr-03 red edition. that are all the jpn and u.s. spec cup chassis sets as well, sp chassis sets, anniversary sets... it's not nearly as long as the list of autoscales but daunting none the less.

It's a dark gray glossy A1 sheet of paper. I'd say its glossness is 60% (0 being a perfect diffuse and 100 a perfect mirror). I found it at my local arts&craft shop.
Around 10€. Actually, photographer shops must have better backgrounds but it's waaaaay more expensive. I also tried black cardboard but there wasn't any reflexion so it was a bit boring.

very nice collection for the month. i really like these monthly group shots as well. perfect for wallpapers or posters if branding were not the most prominent feature;)

I know, I know ;-)
Note that these images aren't meant to be used as wallpapers anyway, because there isn't enough voids to place icons, documents, etc.
I'll make posters, calendars, wallpapers eventually but I wait for more bodies before doing that...

Thanks arch2b! I like it a lot too. :D

Btw, did anybody buy a MZP322CL?
Looks like the ref of the Porsche962 to me, so I'm surprised Kyosho used this ref number for a Nissan 390 GT1 autoscale fit with Ferrari 430 GTC wheels.
I thought the Nissan was R246 territory...

This one (I think) is getting very rare. Not to be confused with Xanavi Nismo 2005 nor the Motul Autech 2007.

I've seen your Yellowhat Z, mleemorsan; it's a 2007 Z if I'm guessing right.
A very nice one!
