Exciting to see commercially available options to Kyosho but not a fan of lexan bodies in general. I love our scale for the detailed scale.

i would like to see how this is done.

The TZ4 AWD mini touring car is a mini size RC car with a Big guy attitude…The new Touring MINI-Q chassis has all the features of its bigger 1/10 scale brother from tunable suspension and chassis set up to swappable Lexan bodies and adjustable wheelbase.

so the kit is called TZ4 utilizing a Mini-Q chassis? TZ4=Mini-Z, Mini-Q=chassis type? need to know how to properly categorize this.

We can clearly see use's mini z wheels wonder which awd or 2wd?

I'd say based on the center screw and ?washer/bearing? that they're using 2wd style mini z rims.

Yea, I'm pleased to see the side posts there, but I haven't had a good look at how the front nose clip will be installed.

I'm more convinced that AWD rims are being used. There are more pictures from HobbyKing's site taken from different angles, you can get a better look at some of the parts and it appears as though AWD-style knuckles are also used, which would lead me to presume some compatibility with AWD swing shafts and differentials. My only remaining concern is the servo dimensions and spline size. We're used to having super fast steering and the only (reasonably-priced) micro servo I have come across so far with an adequate speed is the Corona CS/DS-919MG which is already on the larger side, I use the 929 version in a 1:18 truck.

xmodcanuck I guess you might have noticed I've been absent from meets lately - I've been busy and kind of getting out of (larger scale) RC, but the Z are here to stay and I'm really excited for this TZ-4 and the Atomic chassis. For $60 I'm definitely getting one once they are restocked at HobbyKing. This IMO is what this scale needs that $200+ aftermarket chassis have been unable to become widespread.

I have a FlySky module from a TH9X radio. Just have to rig up an adapter to use it in my EX-1UR and I should be golden!

Currently working with HK on a bulk buy to include two cars and two 2.4g transmitters with a track. Curious of the interest here in the US if an RTR package was sold separate of the track.

I just noticed this morning TRCC posted an unboxing earlier this month.

The servo looks a little slow, and is also 5 wires. I doubt it is proprietary, but swapping in another servo may require removal of the servo's control board and bringing out the individual wires to the ESC. That's if you plan to keep the ESC at all. It won't be a problem for custom RX/ESC installations.

Another look at the photos on HobbyKing's site now brings me to believe that normal AWD knuckles will not be compatible. The steering link uses some ball-end turnbuckles and so they need to clip into the bottom of the knuckle arm.

I just pulled the trigger on one today, finally. I hope to receive it in a week or two and can give confirmation about compatibility with AWD diffs, at the least. I'm bummed about the lack of 90mm compatibility, but I have a spare 98mm body that I never use because my local club has banned black cars on track :p

I took delivery of this today, but I will be very busy for the next two weeks or so, so I will not be able to give a detailed look at this for a while.

At a glance, it looks like AWD knuckles will be compatible at the rear, but not at the front due to requiring a kind of ball link at the front. Car comes from the factory with some front toe-out which I think can be adjusted, and rear toe-in which cannot be adjusted. That's fine with me, I like a little rear toe in.

Ball bearings are installed on the wheel shafts and diffs, and it looks like on the main shaft as well. So a full set is there.

Motor is attached with screws, so replacement options must be tapped - pretty much anything except for official Kyosho, but must connect with a 2pin JST-XH.

Servo has 5 wires, I'll get dimensions with calipers when I have time for disassembly.

Battery is constructed from 14500 Li-ion cylindrical cells and discharges through the balance port. I guess you can use any LiPo of the same or lesser dimensions. Again, caliper dimensions to come later.

Gear diff looks like a standard AWD diff. I would upgrade to either a ball diff, or a hardened Buggy diff plus 3racing steel outdrives.

AWD wheels look compatible, but swingshafts are a little different. Wheels are mounted with a screw that goes into the swingshaft. I think you can swap them out for the normal kind and use wheel nuts. Again I would go with 3racing steel swingshafts.

I *think* wheelbase changes require the same kind of spur gear sets but I won't know until I have time to take this thing apart. The shortest is indeed 94mm, and it appears to have a 94mm spur gear installed, or it might be slightly different.

That's all I can tell from the outside for now...

Not much to update, today I just took a little time to get my radio working with this chassis.

The module is a FlySky FS-TM002 which came from a TH9X radio. I think these can be bought separately or they also come with the old GT3 radio, but this means that anybody who flies planes or helis with a TH9X is ready for this car. I took a page from TrackmateDan at the last meetup and attached the module to my radio with an elastic band and a connecting cable. To make it work, there is a 10K Ohm resistor between PPM and +5V. Without the resistor, the module will bind but the car will not have any other reaction to input.

I only took it for a few laps around a tiny track to get the steering and such set up - I didn't even put the body shell on. Completely box-stock, it is a very quick car, and the tires are decently sticky. The relatively slow servo is actually not a problem, I could navigate chicanes of RCP only two 30cm tiles wide. The car can turn a circle inside two 30cm tiles, much more than you will need but the potential is there.

The real test will have to wait until meetups resume next year! I may order whatever hop-ups I want now, but I should put it on the big track box-stock for one day first.

edit: I forgot to mention, something strange about the charger - the label says 7.4V 800mA. If this is true, then it would not be able to fully charge a 2S LiPo/Li-ion. I put the stock battery on my B6 and ran a discharge/balance cycle and got 560mAh into it to 8.4V.

An update of parts compatibility with a lot of bad news.

I took some measurements and compared to Kyosho AWD parts. There is going to be very limited compatibility with Kyosho parts, so if you are thinking of buying this car, be sure to add many spare parts in your order if you want to change your wheelbase and gear ratios and such.

Here is what I believe are compatible:
AWD wheels
Swingshafts
Differentials
...and that's pretty much it. I didn't really check the motor but I guess drilled motors and pinion gears should be fine.

In particular, not the funky front knuckle on the right-hand side. It has ball links on the upper and lower side, with the upper link pushed by the servo horn. Definitely not Kyosho-compatible.

The rear knuckles are also not compatible, contrary to what I initially believed. The pivot shaft thicknesses are not the same. Swingshafts look to be compatible, thankfully. Kyosho on the left, Turnigy on the right.

Differentials I believe are compatible. The TZ4 is slightly wider at the outdrives, but I think Kyosho should still drop in without any negative effect.

Spur gear is 29T and is a little weird. It sticks out a little on the flat side compared to Kyosho gears. I didn't bother taking out the main shaft but it's also weird compared to Kyosho - not going to be compatible just from looking.

Lastly, the servo:
Dimensions are 18.0/20.9mm tall, 21.0mm wide, and 11.6mm thick. The servo holder fits this quite precisely, so you may need to shave down your servo casing if you find one that doesn't quite fit. A Hextronic HXT 500 will not fit mainly due to being too tall, but it is about 0.3mm too large in the other dimensions as well.

I would upgrade the diffs to ball diffs or Kyosho buggy hard gear diffs, and steel or alloy swingshafts, and keep the rest stock. There isn't much to be done about this car. I think the main weak point will be the knuckles, hopefully Turnigy can release some alloy option parts here.

edit: Looking through HobbyKing's site, I have not been able to find anything matching the servo's dimensions exactly. If changing the ESC/RX, my suggestions would be to buy a spare stock servo and convert it to 3-wire either by wiring a control board from another micro servo externally, or by modifying the stock servo with an internal control board. It looks like there is enough room inside to fit one from a micro servo such as a HXT500 or HS-55.

Have you had more track time with the car? My friend is interested in getting his 2 nephews cars for presents, and this car came to mind... Since they could get unpainted Z bodies and build them for the car as well, for a fraction of the price that he would pay for a Mini-Z. I just want to know if it is worthwhile, or will it be like an Iwaver, not driveable on a track, with brittle parts that you need plenty of spares for.

Unfortunately not, at my place I only have room for about half a Mini-96 and my local club will not meet again until next year, so I have not and will not have a chance for a while to really let this thing rip.

What I can tell right away, is that this thing is very quick. If you just hold it by the tail and gun the throttle, the car will twist along its longitudinal axis. Not sure if this will cause any torque steer like larger cars.

It should be noted that the Mini-Z Buggy had problems with the diff cups shredding the pins on the plastic dogbones. This is a much more powerful motor and still using plastic swingshafts. The 3racing steel shafts are out of stock everywhere, but that would be my recommended upgrade. Failing that, then aluminum swingshafts for sure, and maybe a few sets of plastic stockers just to get started with. A very loose ball diff with some slip may be able to take some stress off the swingshafts too.

The plastic knuckles should be OK since typically they are not subject to extreme stress unless you get T-boned by another car in exactly the wrong spot. Might as well pick up a few sets of spares if there will be multiple cars on track.

This could be mitigated by spending a few extra dollars to get a radio like the GT3 series which will allow you to turn down the throttle endpoint. You will want to anyway, at 100% it's too quick for my Mini-96.

Those metal swingshafts look great, reminiscent of 3racing's steel swingshafts. I hope to pick up at least two pairs, maybe four pairs for a future chassis if the price is right.

These would be to use in Kyosho chassis, or later on the Atomic chassis, because I have some bad news. Read on...

Last Saturday was my first chance to put the TZ4 down on some decently-sized RCP track.
If you do not already have a programmable FlySky radio, it is absolutely essential. Skip the GT2 and go for some variety of GT3, or get a module and use it on a programmable radio. This car is a handful to control without scaling back some settings. The tires are grippy but not quite grippy enough, frequently breaking traction and I think this might have a little to do with it, but dialing back some of the throttle and steering helped greatly to keep this thing under control.

There is a very strong drag brake effect. Even if just holding the car in the air, letting go of the trigger from full throttle brings the wheels to a stop almost immediately.

Now, the major bad news. The manufacturer went to some lengths to attempt Kyosho body compatibility, and that latest HobbyKing video with the option parts also mentions putting on your own bodies.
However, the execution is very sloppy and things don't fit together well. For the two pieces that hold in the nose clip, it was too narrow to fit the clip and I had to shave away some plastic to get the clip into the holders. Next, with the clip in place, the holder got pushed forward a little due to interference from the lower bulkhead, so the holes to mount the holder to the bottom chassis didn't line up well. The screws that hold the nose clip to the holder are teeny-tiny, I think they will strip the plastic easily without some care.

Finally, the motor mount and battery retainer have cutouts to fit the side clips. These are too wide, spreading the body apart, and also too high, jacking up the rear end. You can't shave them down to get the body to a normal width, because the side clip on the body will encounter interference from the motor can.

Just really troublesome to get the body on, and ugly once the body is on.

And that's the dealbreaker for me. I think it could be a decent handler with a good radio and the right tires, but while advertised as being compatible with Kyosho bodies, I would say it's not. I <strongly dislike> these Mazda-6-esque touring car bodies, hate them in 1:10 scale and hate them here, and I can't really switch it to something more interesting here.

With all that said, I cannot recommend anyone to purchase this car - but I hope those upgrade swingshafts will be good (for a different car!)

I plan to buy the Atomic AMZ when it is released. This had great potential to be good, but I think R&D did quite a poor job getting their measurements right. The bar has been set extremely low.

Hi,

I have different experiences with this little racer. My car is blazing fast and super controllable. I even decreased its turning circle to about 25cm diameter and now looking for a brushless upgrade for more speed on a super tight track!! Mini-z cannot keep up with this car by far! I did the following:

Don't buy a GT transmitter! instead, order a corona 919mg servo (1,7kg/0,06s) and some of the red servo tape with your car. cost: 7 bucks for the servo. Than head over to ebay and search for 10A brushed car esc. Cost 8,5bucks incl. shipment. Now throw away that standard rx/esc/servocontroller and the servo. Tape your corona servo on the chassis and put on a normal arm (no servo saver!!!) than tape your mini esc onto the servo, now you can make some really neat and short connections to your motor. At last, tape your own RX to the upper deck and shorten all wires. This allows you to drive your tz4 with your expensive racing TX with a much better servo. In case you don't have one you can still use your GT tx and separate rx. This setup increases your controllability by far! I cut away a little bit of plastic to make the wheel hubs turn a little further. Lateron I added some Atomic ball diffs for mini-z awd. These fit perfectly and smooth your ride even further. Added 3-racing aluminum driveshafts for some redundancy.

Mini-z body:
I bought a cheap unpainted Citroen ds3 mini-z body on ebay. Chose the ds3 cause it's short and gives enough room to store all electronics. I had to shorten the rear "clips" in the body as it was too wide indeed. I simply glued them in just a little bit higher to overcome the raised back. I also had to trim the front "lip holder" of the car to fit the lip. Unfortunately the body was made for a 92mm chassis and I had to cut away some of the plastic around the rear wheels. Nothing problematic. The ds3 body seems to have a positive effect on the car's handling as I broke my personal record by 0,5seconds on 6 seconds laptimes!

I think a lot of people racing at this scale are used to the convenience and looks of a mini-z. This car requires some work, adjustments and improvisation which, to me, is part of the hobby. The car currently outperform any mini-z on our club by far. Running stock it was fast but a little unpredictable. In case you don't want to make any upgrades try to fit a normal servo horn as the servo saver screws with your controllability, especially at high grip tracks.
I'll try to make a driving video next Thursday.

Thanks for sharing your experience. There might be hope for my TZ4 yet then!

I am a big fan of Corona servos for their value and performance. I have a Corona DS-919MG lying around and indeed it is one of my favourite servos (it's so fast!), but often too large at this scale. I put a CS-929MG in my 1/18 truck with a straight horn and it rocks. I also have two AE XPS brushed ESCs from their RC18 line, but I'll have to see about fitting that and a receiver to this chassis.

Good tip about gluing side clips higher. I have a 98mm BMW M3 which I can sacrifice for this, but I don't really feel like having to order the parts for changing the wheelbase.

he's gone a step further with it now--

Couldn't resist to start the last major upgrade... Although I don't have the appropriate 10A mini brushless esc yet I mounted my iniminitiny brushless motor (12mm x 20mm 10300kv) on the chassis. I took a 8T pinion from my old walkera heli's tail and drilled the hole from 1 to 1,5mm. It fitted nicely on the shaft.
I drilled and cut a hole in the motor mount and glued the motor with epoxy inside. It was a one time shot but luckily I got it right with a nice gear mesh.
The esc...
Well I had a 1:10 45Amp hobbyking esc lying around. Took off the fan and heatink, shortened all wires and taped it on top. It fits!!! baaaaaarely. No more room for the transponder though.
Drove the car in my living room. Couldn't give more than 1/4th throttle. Speed is insane!! looking forward to Thursday.

when i get mine an go about brushless conversion, i'll be using ezrun 18a, 12x30mm can an hopefully turnigy coreless servo 0.07s @4.8v or 0.05s @6v :)

If you have the Corona CS/DS-919MG, I don't know why you would want to change it to a Turnigy. In my own experience, the cheaper Turnigy and HK servos don't centre well, but I have not had any problems with Corona servos taking a beating in 1/24 and 1/18 trucks and they come back to centre well. The 919 is plenty fast enough IMO and for high-traction on-road conditions, having a steering response too fast will put you on your lid!

I stated in post: a member on another forum had superb results with chassis: from which i posted his replies to question on mini z shell fitment as you had drama with no sight of a remedy/ lost interest, I knew car had protential not a paper weight :D
the 919 good spec for very little money but not exactly same build spec as mine(coreless,ballrace & heatsink) which i've been running for a year an half in carisma gt14 pro mk2 issue free, have few other turnigy & hobbyking servo's no issue. I rather a fast response servo which i dull down with settings on my radio if too aggressive for conditions :)

I started at rear attempting to mount bulkhead onto chassis screws got tight too point of snapping an bulkhead still able to move (thats how screw ended up after tightening not crossed threaded) the screws supplied with alloy rear bulkhead need to be tat shorter 3-4 threads less(fire up dremal time but would like hex screws instead)

Like to use one of my mini z body so set chassis to 98mm an extended spur added an sametime slipped in spare amz ball diff at front

Bodys fit well into side clip no fuss but clear to see sits too high on this chassis so side clips require raising in body.

So got about shortening servo an motor lead, had quick test on pool table (hear some clicking when pinning thottle so need to shim diffs) will have some fun with it once source front springs
