View Full Version : 2017 Mini-Z GTG Season

Once again I have created a new thread for the 2017 Season & *ARCHIVED* (http://mini-zracer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=37986) all the older ones together.

As per normal, this thread will be for both General Chit Chat & our GTG Announcements.

Be sure to subscribe to this thread so you get a notification when there is an update!
Click on "Thread Tools" above, and choose "Subscribe to this Thread".

We will be taking one last concerted stab at re-introducing class races this year. This will be a push to see if we can get like minded individuals & cars together on the track for structured racing GTG's. Currently these more "Structured Races" will only be happening every 3rd or 4th GTG. We will not be running them strictly. We will mostly keep to our "Run What Ya Brung" open lap runs with some fun races thrown in here & there like we have typically done. We will be sure to send out specific GTG notifications about these runs in advance that way, those that do not wish to participate in the more structured races, can skip them. Rules/Regulations/Specs will all be worked out over the first few "Structured Race" GTG's. Currently, we will be running the "Structured Race" GTG's at our Newton location. Most other GTG's will be at our bigger track layout in Langley.

http://www.doggidy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Warning.png

The following will be the Clubs new Fee structure as of January 1st 2017

Due to Inflation/Rising Costs in Common Room Rental & Equipment to run our GTG's, the club has updated it's fee structure.
Attendance is also down & the club needs to recoup for that. Please spread the word to your friends about us!!!
Please be sure to let any and all of your friends know about the club & if you have any ideas on how we can grow our membership, please let us know!

A TREMENDOUS thanks goes out to Grant "The G" for providing us with such an awesomely huge space to run & for his time in Setting Up/Tearing Down/Storing & Generally Organizing our Langley GTG's!

Grant's Common room is more expensive than the Common Room in Newton. With that & the fact that we want to continue to run at Grant's and make it as easy as possible for setup & tear down, both the club & Grant will be purchasing some more 50cm track. We also would like to start trying to get some random prizes together here and there so the extra income will also help with that. If you know of somewhere that is selling used 50cm, please let us know!

The new fee structure is as follows & is still less than $20 for the day if you get Pizza & Help out!
$15 for the day
$10 for 4 hours or less
$5 for Pizza
-$5 if you help Setup or Teardown. (Max. $5 back)

Again, please try to bring correct change with you.

We hope to see y'all out at the track SOON!

It was a good turn out & a great day of running! I don't think I've put that amount of driving time or mileage into my cars in a LONG time! Thank you everyone for coming out. Hurray for a Pizza Hut opening closer then Fresh Slice & being very comparable on pricing!

I big shout out goes to Derek (cowboysir) for bringing down some of his 50cm quick inside turns, they sure helped add some flow to the mix! The layout was somewhat similar to last time but with even more RCP down on the ground. I was having so much fun I totally neglected to take a pic of the track, did anyone else?

I won't be out to the GTG in 2 weeks, but I will be at the one in Newton in 4 weeks from now! It's right after I get back from Las Vegas where my wife, some friends & I will be celebrating ten long hard years of marriage! =)

See ya all soon out at the track, cheers!

I also put some mileage on your cars...

It was a good day, I think everyone had fun. Thank you to The G for hosting.

The layout was great for speed.

I do recall an F1 circling the track rather slowly though, it needs some improvement.

It was a great day thanks to everyone that came out. A big thanks to Derek, for loaning the club his large radius inside 50 cm turn kit. It made for some incredible high speed sections if you drove a good line. The next Gtg is March 12th. Daylight saving time starts at 2am so don't forget to advance your clocks 1 hour.:):):)

Had a blast racing and discussing rules yesterday gents, its good to be back! Two of my three cars were working very well. My VE car was inconsistent but shows great promise. My "Pro Stock" US-Spec car was averaging around 9.2x, with a best of 9.02, and the VE car was averaging more like 10.5, but I had a few laps in the 8.8x range and one blistering 8.81 lap. More development is needed though, clearly. Looking forward to the next meet!

Thanks to Derek for my two killer custom painted McLaren bodies. Stay tuned for pictures! :D

Let's shoot for a race event next gtg!

I would like to know everyone else's thoughts on when the next Racing League GTG should be. I had thought of spacing them out & only holding them like every 3 or so events.

I'm also going to be busier over the next few months as it's OCR race season for me. I'll try to set the Racing League GTG's around that.

Epic indeed, you set the bar pretty high, never before has someone so slow hacked so much... :)

It was a great day though, the track looked so simple yet was tough to get just right. Mod cars didn't have a huge advantage.

The G
2017.04.10, 05:39 PM
It was a great day thanks to everyone that came out. My budget built cart for the 50cm track made transporting and storing much easier in my shed. The new more technical track layout, Ryan and i came up with made for some great on track battles. I never drove a Mod car all day. I had the most fun running my Abarth 90mm Kyosho brushed high motor chassis car all day. Other than a carbon T plate, oil shock, Kyosho stock ball diff and bearings it is the cheapest and most stock car i own. Derek if you want, i would be up for starting a 90mm racing class in Langley. I have purchased Five sets of Turnigy handout batteries to keep this a budget oriented class. Let me know if there's any interest. Personally i am not interested in any other racing classes. I can book my clubhouse for Sunday, April 23rd if we want it. I forgot to mention it was nice to be graced, by the legend Trackmate Dan.

cowboysir

TheSteve

I will be at the Vancouver Sun Run on April 23rd so I will not be able to make that date.

Does the 90mm class have to be highmount? If so, we best start talking about which one's people prefer & where to get um! =)

cowboysir

There is one choice for high mount....kyosho plastic

There is one choice for high mount....kyosho plastic

Are we enforcing the HM standard for this class? Or can 90mm be any mounting type? I bought like 2 of the 90mm MM motorpods is why I ask.

Currently my Stock chassis is my 90mm MM & I like it that way it is. So if we are looking to enforce HM, I may just have to get myself a new stock chassis. =)

cowboysir
2017.04.13, 10:29 AM
I asked this at the last Langley session but didn't get a firm answer. I plan on building one to conform as I think the idea is to have parity.

90mm narrow f/r
hm mount
stock fets
stock motor
handout batteries (from grant)

I am almost certain that was the extent of Grants wishes for racing this class...I think it'll be a challenge (beyond my ability atm) to be competitive but I relish the opportunity to have equal cars on track.

TheSteve
2017.04.13, 11:09 AM
I think Derek mostly nailed it with his rules - I would add that the stock motor should be a Kyosho stock - no PN stuff that is way faster. The only other question is it any "high body" or Abarth only?

arch2b
2017.04.13, 12:23 PM
if i recall, there are only 5 HM bodies to choose from, VW, Vitz, Fit, Cooper and 500.

TheSteve
2017.04.13, 12:31 PM
Three of us already have the Abarth - so it's not too much of a stretch to make an Abarth class - the downside is they probably aren't easy to find anymore for others who want to join.

cowboysir
2017.04.13, 05:57 PM
4 of us...Dave H has one as well.

I think since Abarths are scarce I'd agree to any body that is narrow f/r that can fit an HM pod.

btw my bad on not clarifying....I did mean kyosho stock motor.

TeeSquared
2017.04.13, 07:27 PM
the downside is they probably aren't easy to find anymore for others who want to join.

They are hard to find and expensive. Un-assembled Abarth 500 bodies are still somewhat easy to find and affordable.

Actually, most HM bodies are not too common.

By the way, the minimum wheelbase for the MM2 motor pod is 94 mm. It will not support the 90 mm wheelbase. There are a handful of aluminum HM motor pods out there, like this one from Eagle Racing (sorry about the image size):

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dIXdBX89qFw/VxBs_NRi8GI/AAAAAAAAApY/vjLTnYbC_Oo6NgCAGbxFIHSoIGICoku2wCK4B/s1600/IMG_0929.jpg

I'd be down for a HM class! :)

The G

My proposed rules for a 90mm high motor mount Abarth racing class. This is based on my current car i run.
Kyosho Mro3 non Sp chassis stock fets.. If you have an Sp chassis that's fine. Everything on my car is plastic all steel screws.
Kyosho stock ball diff/ stock steel shaft.
Kyosho carbon T plate.
Kyosho black springs.
Kyosho oil shock.
Kyosho ball bearings.
Kyosho 6 tooth pinion gear.
Kyosho plastic high motor mount.
Kyosho stock brushed motor.
Kyosho aluminum wheel nuts.
Kyosho Abarth body with stock rims, tires, narrow front and rears Kyosho 30's. Mine show little wear after 4 years of running.

Spec tire to race on. Kyosho Mini Z MZW2-30 High Grip Tire (30)
Everyone to use a Kyosho 6 tooth pinion gear.
Handout batteries Turnigy 900mAh aaa's. (I only have five sets at this time.)
I would like everyone to run an Abarth body.

Optional parts.
No aluminum Kyosho or other after market parts. Lets make this the cheapest racing class ever.
Any Kyosho front spring set you want.

Funny how the pic of the Eagle Racing motor pod shows the rear end tweaked out of shape.

Is anyone going to fault me for semi wide 30s on the car since that's all I have for 30s atm? Other than that I think I can reproduce grants spec exactly (parts may not make it in time for this gtg)

I was thinking the day was a bust until Derek arrived shortly after 10am. I new Steve was coming out but couldn't be here for 9am. Derek and i started building the track. Steve and Loyd arrived a bit later. Together a new layout was designed. I ran my Abarth all day and had great on track battles. Everyone's lap times on the day were impressive. I am going to talk with Ryan about making a 3 month Schedule in advance. This will give everyone plenty of notice for future meets. I think a group poll is needed to determine if Saturday is a better day than Sunday for our Gtg's. Thanks to everyone that attended. I can host May 6th or 7th in Langley. cowboysir

Our stock test times all were in the low to mid 12sec with TheSteve taking his mod AWD into the low 11sec. I believe that was the only Mod running on the day as most were working on nailing down smooth/consistent stock and super stock setups.

Thanks for the pic G. Like I said it was a fun flow so I hope we can reproduce that one again. Its great to have tons of track but as we've seen its not key/important to make difficult/technical layouts so much as it's nice to make flow circuits that are challenging. (that's a dig at you, Ryan):p

Good evening gentlemen, there is a good chance I might actually be able to make it out to this one, but you will all have to educate me on what I have missed so far. It will be my first time at Grant's place, and what little skills I had since last time would surely have deteriorated so I will consider myself a newbie.

I would like to get something set up for the 90mm HM, but I don't remember if I have a HM motor mount in my parts box at home, I'll have to take a look. Would a Honda Fit be allowed? That's the body I was using for my (unsuccessful) FWD build that I could repurpose.

James has been wanting to host a GTG for a while & is looking into seeing if his hall is available for rent on the 28th. The rateof the room is about $40 more than Langley & there will be some details to work out on him getting the track to & from his place but I think it would be a good place to do a GTG. Address is: 2660 Shaughnessy St. in PoCo. Looking for feedback & attendance #'s. I will be able to make this date so I would be there. Confused i thought the clubs racing in Newton on May 28th. I guess your talking about a possible Gtg at James' place in June?

G, yeah... Dave W. has bitten off a bit more than he can chew work wise & will now be unable to host. :(

James has stepped up & offered to host a GTG on the 28th at a pretty sizable hall near his place. :) 2660 Shaughnessy St. in PoCo.
Full details are still to be worked out, the post should be up this weekend sometime though. James has invited about a dozen people that are mostly part of a different scale RC club to see if they may be interested in Mini-Z. I believe the rate for the day will be $10 + Pizza if we decide to go that route.

I'd like to get as many of us out there to show these guys what fun Mini-Z is & what it's capable of. If any of you think you will be able to make it, please reply.

While I applaud your efforts on expanding the club base I have a couple questions that concern me:

1.How do you intend to transport all of the track at Grant's and get it to the hall in PoCo in a timely fashion for setup, tear down and then return to Grant's (especially since it seems unlikely that Grant will be able to help much)

2. If James has a dozen friends showing up how exactly will they experience Mini-Z without any equipment of their own? I mean no disrespect but your choices are borrow someone else's gear (which won't happen from me) or the club loaner gear (is there any loaner gear now?) which is poorly set up that driving it doesn't make for an enjoyable first experience.

As I've mentioned I won't be able to attend but I really thought these points should be discussed as the track move is an extraordinary effort and want everyone to understand what kind of undertaking you've signed up for.....

James has a Mini-Van that he can transport what I'm hoping will be at least 3/4's of the track. He may have someone else with a sealed vehicle (Van/Truck) that he can get to transport the rest. Timing of Pickup & Drop Off will need to be worked out in advance of course between James & Grant & I believe James does have a secure space that he can store the track in in his house if he has to pick it up or drop it off a day or two before/after.

It's the same that we have done any other time we have held a demo. The Club has a loaner car that I will be hopefully bringing once I get a body for it, & I have my cars & radio I will gladly lend out. At the worst, I will just bring the radio & bind it to one of my other cars. I believe James also has like three radios & cars he can loan out as well. The experience all comes down to whom comes out to show them what they are capable of & what gear we have to let them try. Not everyone is willing to lend out their cars & I get that. But, they can be there to show what they are capable of.

As I've mentioned I won't be able to attend but I really thought these points should be discussed as the track move is an extraordinary effort and want everyone to understand what kind of undertaking you've signed up for.....
Yup, James & I are aware, I've talked to him a bit about it. I've also had to co-ordinate it's move into NewWest a few times, and other places as well. We have typically had the use of a Minivan, or a Truck or a Trailer in the past, but, if we want to make it happen & can find the means, I think it'll be a great day. It's too bad this will be on the same weekend as the F1 races.

It's still in the planning stages, but with time & dedication I'm hoping it will come into fruition & I'm hoping a bunch of you will be able to make it out!

Cheers.

James (whom is waiting for forum registration to clear) has regretfully had to call off his claim to hosting a GTG this weekend. Due to logistics & lack of timing, he feels that he wouldn't be able to provide the experience that he was hoping to. It's too bad, but understandable. We will be working together to have an upcoming GTG at James' place sometime in the near future.

As Grant is taking this upcoming weekend off we will not be running a GTG this weekend. Please post your thoughts on potential dates for the next GTG here.

It's OCR season for me & the next 2-3 months are pretty booked. I am not available until July again, but please try to have another GTG before then!

May 28th - Helping a friend move
June 4th - Daughters 5 year B-Day party
June 11th - On Mt. Seymour participating in the Spartan Super
June 18th - In Whistler participating @ Tough Mudder
June 25th - Wife's B-Day
July 2 - Canada Day Weekend
July 23 - In Seattle participating in the Gladiator Rock'N Run

A quiet day with only Derek, Marty and myself. An all new 50cm Derek designed layout on the day. I drove a ton of laps, all simulation runs for the upcoming Whistler Gtg and enduro race. Here's a picture of the track layout you missed driving on below.

Thanks for hosting and for the awesome venue Derek. Track was excellent. Enduro was challenging. I've never had such funny looking tire wear after a race... :)

Something has also come up for me & I won't be able to attend on Sunday. I hope others can make it out to help Grant setup & teardown. If not, this GTG may take a rain cheque! Please chime in if you are going to make it out to this GTG.

Here's a >>LINK (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1QXbW62WdmX4dZ2cbgNGHDR1pZ5f9iiuzvvpnrJZRQfI/edit)<< to a document I have put together. This is a loose guideline as to what we will try to stick to for the upcoming Racing League GTG. If we don't have enough of one class we will skip it & just go with the flow. If you have any thought's, let me know!

I'm hoping a bunch of you will be able to make it out!
See ya in a few weeks!

If F1 is to be "open" I think motor options should be open.... with the 90cm width layout of Newton it shouldn't be too much of a benefit running different motors anyways.

I hope to make it but weather being my decider I can't commit as of yet.
