excuse me i f i sound dumb ,but how exactly does one benefit from the so called brake function? is it not the same as just tossing the car in reverse and releasing. from what i see it just stops the car.

When you slam your car in reverse it is hard on your gears and makes them easier to strip, braking is easier on your gears and adds to the realism:D

lookinco, B4 for installed an F1 ESC, I had a piece of foam that limited the travel the trigger had for reverse. It basically went to about 1/3 throttle, just enuff to slow the car with out spinning, but still enuff to use reverse. Another way is to use an aftermarket Tx, which has end point adjustment. This allows you to tailor exactly how much reverse works even at full throttle going backwards, you can have none, or as much/little as ya want, and it is dialed in on the Tx. But now I have actual brakes, the car gets slowed down at a nice rate, not too quickly, but not too slowly either.

So all I have to do is get the F1 esc and will get braking ?

Yes, a F1 ESC will give you brakes in a Mini-Z Racer, but it's a high price to pay for such a small function. IMO, it's a lot more useful on an Overland, where it allows you to stop on an incline without rolling backward.

so is the brake proportional? if i just push the trigger a tad it will only brake a tad and keep going?

This is the way I understand it. If I'm mistaken, I'm sure that someone will correct me.

When the throttle is released, the braking function is activated. The driver has no control of the braking, really. The only thing you can do is work the throttle if the braking amount is too great or too little.

On cars with no braking function, the magnets in the motor act as a "brake". I've heard a lot of people comment on how upgrading to stronger magnets increases this "brake".

The F1 and Overland ESCs have a built in brake function. If you drive and let go of the throttle it will coast & slow down because of the motor magnets, but if you slam it full reverse while still driving forward, it slows the motor even faster, but the car will not reverse. Then wait a second, and hit reverse again after the car is stopped & the car will back up.
