got notice giro-z is shipping! still need to order the bridge materials though.

good news, giro-z arrived today. bad news, it arrived in bits and pieces. i just can't catch a break:rolleyes:

That really sucks ray, sorry. If you could tell me what materials and measurements that are needed to make the bridge and I'll try to make one.

PN will ship a new kit when it arrives. it took a couple weeks to get what i have so it may be a couple weeks more

i was just about to pull the trigger on 2x2x72 aluminum u channel. my idea is to make a channel bridge with bent rod legs. i've got half a dozen sketches like that one with various designs for attaching through a rail, folding under the track, resting inside rail pins, etc. thinking strong, very small footprint and very small sightline/profile. i wanted to use pvc u channel but aluminum is actually half the cost, go figure. the 2x2 u channel will aid in keeping the pickup sensors accurate. i've not found 1/8"-1/4" rod or have tools to bend it though.

I'll dig around and see what I can find. I know I don't have any 2x2 aluminum u channel at work but might something that would work.

can someone provide measurements for rail pin? i need the pin diameter and distance between centerlines of holes in rails. one set of legs i intend to make will anchor to rail pins. i may also make a set that folds and rests on the floor.

anyone have access to a bender jig? i'm not sure i can bend 1/8"-1/4" rod with hand tools. also, anyone weld? 1/8" rod is still flexible and may need some reinforcing bars spot welded to make the frame rigid. i bought a couple 1/8"x36" rods today and will order the aluminum channel this weekend.

never mind, ordering a wire bending jig as well. found one that will work and is cheap.

thanks to mike ., i have some GPM tires to try as well.

TheRinger 2012.04.06 03:24 PM

Where did mike find them?

arch2b 2012.04.06 03:33 PM

it's mike, he's got stockpiles of parts like trailer park hoarders do cats and dogs :p

i started work on the bridge today. got the channel stencil work done and painted. i made a bent rod leg prototype.

turns out the bent rod i got from lowes, 1/8"x36" is about 8" to short to do what i want. the prototype is just the basic shape and features. the final leg needs additional bends to add rigidity to the frame and provide anchor points to the channel. anyone know where you can buy 1/8" steel rod at least 48" long? the jig works but is rather basic. it makes it very hard to get all the bends without twisting the frame. a good bench vise and some large pliers would plumb things up but i have neither. also still need to find the right clamps. i know they exist as i've used them before but can't find them anywhere. it's a throughbolt clamp with the clamp plate that has curved pockets on either end to hold wire flat to a surface.
