$10 Free to Spend at the Shop!

Starting November 1st, we're giving away a $10 Gift Certificate each month to the best Product Review posted to http://shop.tinyrc.com. So that we know who posted what, please post a link in this thread in order to be considered. By "best" we don't mean that it lavishes the product with the most praise, but rather that it is the most informative and is well written, with bonus points for things like details of threads and galleries on MZR that contain further information relevant to the item. Let us know if you have any questions - thanks! :)

How do you write a review? I can't see a review button on the page anywhere? Sorry.

EDIT: I wasn't logged in. Oops. It is available when logged in.

arch2b 2005.10.31 08:31 PM

Great new feature, I hadn't noticed we could do this with the new shop. One thing to note, though...it seems there is a word/character count limit on the reviews, but there is no mention of it where you enter your review (and no way to edit a review you have posted). Thus, my first try was cut a little short:

http://shop.tinyrc.com/product.php?productid=16986

It was supposed to read:

Typical meticulous attention to detail associated with Kyosho Autoscales. This is an absolutely beautiful body. I would not, however, recommend it as a regular racer, as the shape of the Ford GT exposes the tires/wheels quite a bit, which are then prone to impacts during a race. This is likely only a good race body for those who are comfortable that they will rarely come into contact with walls or other racers.

If this is not on purpose, it might be worth noting that most databases use 255 as the default limit for varchar (text fields), and anything above that limit is automatically removed/lost when it is stored (it seems to have been cut off at ~252 characters).

Edit: looking back at some of HammerZ's posts, it seems several of his were cut off at 255 characters as well.

interesting....

btw, i ALWAYS type such things in word, to catch spelling errors mostly, than paste in because i've had such things happen many times and i don't have teh patience to redo lost work

Twenty-Se7en 2005.10.31 08:45 PM

I just wrote a review about 5 times longer than it posted.... it didn't tell me of the character limit. *sigh*

HammerZ 2005.10.31 08:50 PM

I have no idea how many of mine got cut off.

Twenty-Se7en 2005.10.31 08:56 PM

I just got cut off at 194 words. I did it in word. I had just a few words left in the sentence.... :( huge disapointment.... how can we review the products we have if we don't even know how much we can say??

EDIT:

Another cut off at 201.

arch2b 2005.10.31 09:01 PM

i've emailed mini-z and i'm sure he'll see this thread when he gets back to work and will resolve the character count issue. :)

I'm sure it'll get fixed, it's just growing pains with a new system. Consider yourself a beta tester. :D Chances are if it is just the 255 character limit (as I'm pretty sure it is at this point), it can just be resized. I've never encountered trouble increasing the size of a field (though this does not hold true for changes to a different data type, i.e. blob), even when a system is in use.

Thanks soyverde et al, s/b fixed now - for those who were truncated, please re-post here and I'll manually repair them! :)

Twenty-Se7en 2005.11.01 08:45 AM

thanks mini-z... could you let us know what the word count allowed is now?

mini-z 2005.11.01 12:55 PM

Changed from varchar 255 to text, so feel free to type all you want! :D

Twenty-Se7en 2005.11.02 04:57 PM

Great... the reviews will be nice and good quality now. Thanks :D

Posted a review of the Atomic F1 Alloy motorcase.

A review of the Atomic Damper Plate System (DPS) will come in the future, when I have had some time to evaluate.
