I go back and forth between 96mm and 98mm. The longer wheelbase is a bit more stable, but the 96mm is a little more edgy and neutral.

Not really, it's going to be faster, but at a big expense to torque. The wire is too thin of a guage to be used for such a low wind count. I would just pick up some 28ga wire and do it yourself.

I have definitely had a different experience than what you are saying. Pattern wound motors are always much closer to each other than machine wound, given that hand winding uses a very similar amount...
