We love to think of batteries and electric everything as green and clean technology, but the ugly truth is that making batteries is a horrible and dirty industry. The industries that mine the raw materials out of the earth are even worse. (Edit: Lithium is actually a little less horrible to extract (boiling salty brines) than other raw materials like nickle, but it is by no means clean. )
