Agree, which is why I'm wondering why they apparently chose parallel instead of series.

Although you still have the previous problem with cells in series, one benefit is that on discharge, the average discharge voltage for the pack is a useful number to evaluate the health of the pack. With the cells in parallel, this measure is meaningless.
