RCP is the standard racing surface for Mini-Z's nowadays, you can get almost 100 sq. ft for $200. High quality racing surface, but for larger tracks the cost adds up.
Regupol and Ozite (rubber and carpet, respectively) are also good racing surfaces at a similar cost per sq. ft.
Once you go cheaper than RCP, Regupol, or Ozite, the choice is really up to you since you'll be sacrificing track quality or having to spend a lot of your own time into making the track a good quality. I've made fun track layouts on a concrete or linoleum floor before, it's nearly free (just need tape and some corner dots) but you'll need to be careful driving because traction is low!
Hope that helps a little bit -- it's been a while since most of us considered anything other than RCP for a track.
Have you considered using chalk board paint like they use for slotcar tracks? I really like the concept of a wooden track.
You might try using "sheetrock" panels. Easy to work with sizes. Paintable. Easy blending of seams. Cheap. And with a little bit of talent an carpentry skills you could build a framework for shaping the surface into hills and banked turns or whatever else you want to do. Not very portable though.
Iv not long known about Mini Z cars (just under 2 months) but since I found
out about them I have bought 2 cars lol.
A MR-01 and a MA-010 AWD
Iv only just recieved the AWD yesterday and cant wait to have a go.
Now my problem is I can only race it once every 3 weeks as thats the only
time I get off the same time the club runs so I can race on a RCP track.
I want to make up my own track but streched for cash ATM so im looking
for a cheap alternative. Would raceing on concret be ok? If so then I can run
my cars on the floor in work just need to sort something out the make barriers.
Would blocks of wood be ok for barriers?
