NYC area Racing Questions
I've raced many different types of RC for the last 25 years off and on. I've been out of racing for the last 2 years and I'm getting that old familiar itch again. Looks like the closest racing in the area is Mini-Z's so that sounds good.
1. What nights are there the biggest turnouts and where?
2. What chassis/body combination is most popular?
3. I've not seen much in the way of charging. What is the most common charger for these AAA's?
4. I want to buy locally so, which shop is best stocked with mini-z goodness?
5. What sort of lap timing system is used in these cars?
Thanks in advance for the help...

Welcome back! Where to race all depends on where you live. For the NYC area check the links below: You have Action rc, Brooklyn Hobbies, and the new Los Magnificos (gotta check you guys out)!
http://mini-zracer.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=62
For New Jersey: Maj's RC
http://mini-zracer.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=105
Cruizin:

As far as chargers, it depends on your personal prefrence. For the first few months I used a $25 Energizer 15 min charger and moved up to a Lacrosse, and power x. I now use a Tamiya super brain.
Most tracks use either Core, I-laps, or Gyro Z. Gotta call the location where you plan to frequent the most.
Hope this helps.

overall turnouts are probably similiar 20-30 racers Majs is Friday
Action is Friday and cruizin is saturday. there is a new track Los Magnificos (Bronx) Im not sure of there schedule.
Some tracks have specific classes that others dont. The classes usually run for a point series then change.
Cruizin has carpet while Majs, Action and Los Magnificos use RCP.
All the shops are stocked with mini z goodness. Los Magnificos being new probably has the least.
an mr03 (2.4) and the Ferrari 430 body 94mm is very popular. This will be a $500 investment with a 2.4 tx.
battery chargers can be cheap or as expensive as your taste/budget allows.
I would say about $100 investment will set you up nicely.

Dr. H,
Action RC is located in Staten Island. We have a full shop, all the parts, batteries, bodies, kits, etc. We have a huge track, a weekly practice and racing schedule, and a lot of FUN! Check out our website:
www.actionRCspeedway.com
As previously mentioned, there are several great tracks spread out throughout the region, and this forum is definitely the place to learn about them all! Enjoy, and welcome to the club!
The charger that most of is use at Action is $75. You can go AM for about $150, or a 2.4 MR03 (recommended) with radio for under $300 for the car, body, and radio. You'll need some batteries, but they're not expensive. $500 will get you started with lots of stuff, but you don't need to spend $500 to get started. Hope this helps!

Nice turnout! How many classes would that be spread among? How many race at a time? Last time I was racing I was at CRCRC in Columbus, OH and we had for any given class 10 - 15.

Excellent...the MR03 with the 430 body is one I was somewhat interested in.
Thanks everyone for the info...I'll be out to check out racing in the next few weeks or sooner. I'm looking forward to getting back into racing.

You will find with mini z many racers run 2 or more classes. Each track has its popular class and Im sure it revolves around a stock motor. That class will have between 15-25 racers. A to D mains. Pretty much all tracks will run a class with 3 racers. So in a given race you can have between 3 to 8 racers.
Most tracks run bump ups as well.
Mini Z racing is very addicting and after the initial investment very inexpensive to be competitive.
If you have a KO TX or a module based TX Futaba or Airtronics to get into mini z racing 2.4 will be much cheaper. A base MR03 w a 430 body will be about $200. Add bearings a ball diff a motor motor pod and front end and your at about $400. (possibly more depending on taste) beware Carbon Fiber, titanium and Aluminum is hypnotic with these chassis...
You didnt say where your from but all the tracks have excellent race programs and friendly racers. I really think you should check out all of them and find out which is best for you.
I have a few customers in the Columbus area and I have visited Tom thumb hobbies. I also found a decent restaurant by the Polaris Mall..The Tilted Kilt...
I was just there 2 weeks ago...

most tracks have rentals and if not,im sure they would have cars to try.....
stop by and ill let you run a stock one versus a slightly modded version to see what you like...right now getting a low end radio is kinda hard as kyosho is out 80-160 range if you have a radio already that uses a module in the back it can be converted to run minizs if your radio is on 2.4 or no module type you will need to buy a radio as mini z freq is special to minizs on 2.4 side of miniz
27mhz are in the 130 range but i would no way race one,but to rent track out to just play there fine
if you want to get in lightly most places will let you borrow a charger so that can help you save up or to buy some hop-ups first to be competitve i can charge 32 bat at a time so i can charge bat for you, any questions call around to local tracks, if you want im open everyday for questions and track rental just thur night and sat i try not to rent track as racers are practicing and they wind up creaming rentals

That was probably me then....hope you enjoyed the car, whichever one it was.
I've never been able to leave well enough alone...it's part of the rc sickness. If you have purchased one of my cars then you can probably attest to that.
The transmitter has me stumped. $80-90 for the cheapo 2.4 or 350ish for the ko eurus or $450 for the blacked out eurus...see, it's a disease.
Thanks for the info.
I actually lived near Polaris (still cant sell the house there). Now I am living in Rye.

I would say welcome to the club...but since you already have the disease I will say Welcome Back...
The 2.4 mini z TX/RX is proprietary so in the fashion of Kyosho its either cheap or expensive. The bottom line is they all do the job. A total newbe to RC will adapt the best to the cheaper TX. Since you have the disease already you know you need the Eurus...
