Beginner Hooked
So yesterday I got my first experience on the track and had a blast. I currently have an MR-03 Sport and let me first say the guys at the track were awesome. They helped me get it setup where I could get on the track and have some fun. However I became frustrated with it shutting off due to static. I want to upgrade my platform where I can continue to progress with more track time. Problem is when looking beyond the MR03 Sport all I am finding is brushless. I would like to upgrade the transmitter as well. I am planning to continue running the sport while I get more on track experience.
Open to any suggestions for an upgraded platform.
Thanks,
JB

Glad you were able to make it out, apologies for the delays throughout the day. when you only use the equipment twice a month, you don't get a lot of time to resolve gremlins.
We are trying to work with Kyosho USA on the shut down problem for sports series. It's a work in progress as it's also hurting us on our demonstration fleet. It's a known issue they need to resolve.
If you wish to make the jump to ASF and a better radio over the 'sports' (FHS), there is no shortage of guys with extra ASF brushed cars they have for sale. I prefer brushed myself. i have a couple myself i'd let go.

welcome to the forums....
i don't have any experience with the mr03s (sport) versions... i do know that kyosho released a mr03 sport 2 version (can anybody tell me what the differences between the first and second versions are?)...
so i don't know if they both have shut down issues... maybe you can disconnect the fuse on the stock motor? how long do you run before the motor shuts down? good luck...

soap box rant for a bit
Sports 2 integrates gyro compatibility and if you believe what you hear, a fix to the shut down problem.
We can tell you it happens to both series 1 and 2. It happens wither or not you have or have removed the thermal fuse on the motor. It happens regardless of the tire combination used. It can happen repeatedly over and over. Duration of run or, meaning temperature, is not a reliable predictor. It does not happen to all cars. It happens to box stock cars with or without any option parts such as ball bearings, tires, h plates. Simply put, it's frustratingly perplexing and enough so it is hurting sales thus entry level growth. Our club has a demonstration fleet and it has affected all 4 cars at some point and two very frequently, so much so I don't put them on the track anymore and will be returning them to Kyosho USA. From a business perspective, it's shameful to put out a product with such propensity for failure as this should be caught in product testing, QC stages. It causes undo burden on the retailers that dell then have to service/return them. From an enthusiasts perspective, it seriously erodes confidence in the brand.
I fully support the sports series intention in providing a gateway product line however it should not come at the expense of reliability. who is going to gamble on investing in the more expensive lineup when the more affordable line is unreliable? Kyosho positions itself as a premium brand demanding a premium cost and delivering an average product in this case.
This being said, some people get lucky and get a kit with no problems, which only adds to the frustration in that your really picking blindly at the retail shelf. are you feeling lucky? that's the mindset in making a kyosho purchase for the sports series and that is simply HORRIBLE.
back to the topic at hand and JB3, I believe we have a solution mapped out for him and look forward to seeing him at the track again

to clarify, the solution involves migrating away from sports series as the most cost effective and least intrusive option. this is almost never normally the case but just so happens to work out this way in this very specific case due to unique opportunities that happen to be available at this time.
I will follow up as needed on the resolution of the sports series issues with this particular car and a couple others at the hobby shop as they unfold. the shop manager is keenly interested in getting this resolved and will be assisting me in pressing this issue.

I agree, Ray. Pretty hard to get new people into it when the least expensive option gives constant issues. Not a good way to get new racers involved.

Ok then, tell me exactly what I should be buying as a complete newb that last ran an RC 10 years ago...
I have a 03 sport en route, but have no problem buying a something else and keeping the sport in the case for when it explodes.
thank you in advance.

I just got back into mini z and to be honest it was frustrating to figure out what to get. I almost purchased a sport version until I figured out Kyosho went cheap and you only get KO propo stuff at VE or VE Pro level; but if you didn't want brushless and still want KO compatibility you have to go ASF board which are getting harder to find and not as fast as MHS.
I say go with an older ASF MR03 or the new VE Pro. It's no fun if the car is finicky and breaks down and you have to chase gremlins. And that sounds like the case for the Sport models.

asking what to get, open ended, its a dangerous direction to wander you can easily sink $500 into a car with everything imaginable vs. buying the bare minimum to be generally competitive and see where your skill and wallet take you from there. at bare minimum, i would purchase an mr-03 brushed ASF car. you can find them if you look around and they are typically cheaper now that most are out of the retail supply chain. likewise you could build from scratch a basic PN2.5W ASF car for about the same cost as buying an RTR.
there is no one answer solution. it's a matter of preference, skill and what you hope to get our of it. If your thing is tinkering, build a car from a PN 2.5W chassis and pick whatever electronics your most comfortable with. start with stock chassis parts that bolt on and swap them out as you see fit for better performance. keep an eye on ebay, and forums, there is ALWAYS someone selling a car and at a reasonable price, typically much cheaper than buying new.
if your looking to dip your toes in the water, sports 2 is OK. it has it's gremlins but gets you in cheap. if your hooked and looking for better platform to start from, ASF is the way to go. Don't bother with MHS being needed, it's negligible at best. I had one and went back to ASF out personal preference.

well, lets say I was putting a track in my basement. I wanted to buy four stock vehicles that just went around the track without issues.
and i would probably bump one to run 2WD Stock (not box stock) in 1/28th WS.
what do I buy.

No problems, skip sports series. Find 4 ASF brushed ready sets. If you can't find those, just pick up ASF brushless sets.
