I read elsewhere people say it's a crappy clone of a Radline RC that can be bought at Target. I just got one recently, and I honestly have to say that clone or not, I am genuinely impressed with the construction of this thing. I got the 2.4GHz truggy, and gave it a quick power test right out of the box. Tires are very sticky and will pull standing wheelies on hardwood flooring. I don't know why this thing gets so much hate. For $60+shipping I think this is the ideal indoor basher, I may end up driving this more than my Losi uSCT and Kyosho Buggy.
Of course nothing stays box-stock for long. Upgrades from Redcat include bearing set, CVDs, metal diff outdrives, and dampers. I upgraded the steering to a Corona DS-919MG digital metal gear servo (it's fast! will bounce around the centre like a Mini-Z if the steering wheel is released) and I'm using a Spektrum SR300 rx with Associated XPS ESC. Motor is stock since the 180 upgrade motor is too long to fit with the taller DS-919MG servo. I might eventually try swapping this for a hotter Atomic Mini-Z motor of some kind if I can't find a brushless motor to fit. The Toro 1/18 diameter is just a tiny bit too big.
I also picked up a stupid Fast Lane line toy from Toys R Us just for the hard body, but I needed to get an extra set of uncut body posts for the front. Now it looks like a crappy Toys R Us toy, but it will smoke all those New Bright RCs.
This will be really fun to bash, and the AA batteries will last a long time. Unfortunately this truck is really heavy, and the weight is quite high up, even higher with my build. With the sticky tires and fast servo, it traction rolls easily. Even with this suboptimal handling, for $60 it's hard to recommend anything else since box-stock is already pretty good IMO and you don't need to buy any special batteries to run it for longer than 10 minutes at a time like the Losi or HPI micros.
Hey Isaac, yea I'm quite pleased with the truck. I think you will like it too. The 2.4GHz board has some quite monstrous FETs, and I didn't really have any issue with control during the brief time I used it.
In fact the XPS ESC isn't always playing nice with Spektrum (known issue), so I might just revert back to the stock receiver/ESC board. Only thing is I'd like to keep the Corona servo in there, so I may need to solder in a connection for that.
How long is the runtime on that rig? I was actually on their website earlier today and I liked what I saw of the little monster truck. Looks a bit bigger than 1/24th in their marketing vids.
Did you get the upgraded shocks? Are they oil-filled?
What does the bearing upgrade do?
The runtime.... I haven't checked! I would guess it's longer than 45 minutes.
The bearings reduce friction at the wheel axles which lightens the load on the motor a bit. The aluminum oil-filled shocks are a good upgrade since the original friction shocks don't provide much damping at all which gives the oscillation and uncontrolled rebound, and it's nice to have some damping on the compression too for this heavy truck.
The wheelbase is certainly 1/24, but the wheels are huge and the truck is very tall so it looks like a bigger truck.
