Hi, I recently got my hands on one of the RTR First Mini-Zs, the Initial D Legend AE86. I've heard they've also been known as Palm Runners? Anyways, I want to add a lighting kit, since the body can support it, but I'm not sure how to connect it to the chassis. I know it's not designed to be modular or convenient to modify, but it's all I could afford at the moment and I'm enjoying every second driving it.
Any tips or suggestions would be much appreciated.
Most of the light sets for mini Z are meant to plug into a 4-pin socket, and the First Mini Z doesn't have one. Kyosho makes separate light sets for Sport and RWD, and older ASF and VE, and the only real difference is the pin configuration.
Since you don't have that port, you won't be able to get throttle-related functionality (brake lights are 50% unless you are braking), I don't think.
You could get one of those sets (MZW429R is the Sport version, MZW439R is the ICS version), cut off the plug and just make your own connection to your battery terminals, red to red, black to black.
There are also aftermarket sets that might work better, like this:
If the body is set up for LEDs, they plug right into the headlight/taillight bucket, there's usually a clear "dummy" plug in the hole. Just pull that out and replace it with the LED. I find a hot glue gun to be the best tool to secure the LEDs in place and to tack the wires into the fender wells and roof to avoid any interference with the suspension.
Without an accessory port, you need to wire to the battery connection tabs in order to come with batteries. Or wire to switch to com on with the switch or to the motor leads to come on only when on throttle.
