I used to race 1:10 scale touring cars but stopped when I realized that I could race full-size cars for less than the top guys spend every year on R/C gear. I remember seeing the Mini-Z's when they first came out, but I figured they were just expensive toys that wouldn't have a future.
Boy, was I wrong.....
I went to the Track in Markham to see what it was all about when it first opened, and thought it was wicked, because of the cost-effectiveness of the Mini-Z's, and that they went so fast for their size. So I sold my racing touring car and got one!
Now that I'm back into R/C, I do miss my 1:10 scale racer, but my Tamiya Subaru TB01 rally car sort of fills the void....

Well "other" for me aswell...
Like Rallynut i used to race 1:10 Touring and we build a little track for the "kids" so they could race something aswell...
Soon my friends and i bought Mini-Z:s just to have something to do when waiting for the batterys to our Touring Racers should be ready =)
Real fast we realised that this was so much more fun and more challenging and easy and little to carry and so on...
I sold the touring-crap ( Fully optionised HPI PRO3 ) and that is never something i regret.... Nowdays i RACE my car instead of sitting in the pit with a headake

We've had most everything R/C before, from Kyoshos Electric Peanut and Markers 1/8 electric car (pre-80's) up to about 8 years ago when I burned out. In the last few months I decided to try 'playing' again and ordered a new TXT from Tamiya. For some reason the fun just didn't return with that and I just traded it for a Mini & cash. I had been reading about the mini's and saw them in LHS but did not want to part with the $130.00 out of my pocket so I worked a deal.
At one time Parma had made a 1/24 R/C car kit that required micro electronics.....it was neat, but not up the the mini's current state. Tamiya's TamTech was just plain too fast to be useful.
Hat's off to Kyosho for kicking Tamiyas rear on this one
We now have 3 mini's, all due to trades, a 4th coming along with a BIG box of parts!
I purchased a few minor hop-ups so far and plan on more in the near future.
Nothing for speed as the cars are just about perfect as is for our use.
Now, if someone could convince them to produce a popular late 60's/early 70's american made muscle car body..................

Never had a thought of RC in fact. It did´nt exist.
But my oldest boy (11) said one day that he´d like to try out some RC-racing.
I like to help my kids explore the world and all that´s fun in it, so we asked the LHS for a club and we went there.
There was a 1:10 car to rent and me and my youngest boy played some gameboy when the older one drove on the track.
Both my boys were immediately hooked up on it but when we understood what money there was to spend to drive 1:10 touring we realised it was impossible.
But - there was also a tiny track beside the 1:10 indoor track. A mini-z track. The kids had some spare money and soon me and my wife found two used z:s for them.
I was prepared to sit down in a chair reading the newspaper having some coffe when they drove, as I use to do when they have their other activities. (Football, skatepark, ju-jutsu, flute, well, you know). But soon I had to by myself a used Z from the club, liked it much. Took time for me to learn how to use it though.
Had to build a small track (2.5 x 3 m)down in the basement for practise.
But kids are´nt easily hooked up on things these days. There are too many other things for them to do and try out on their sparetime. Now, two months later, they consider the Z:s being rather booring. So now I´m sitting for myself driving on my micromicrotrack in our basement
Now I´m the one hooked up on it trying to get my kids come with me to the track. Sometimes they do. Mostly because I by them some snacks in the café!
They sit there watching their grown up? daddy playing with microcars.
Aint life strange?

Right when Mini-Zs came out, I saw them in a magazine - "wow, that is the coolest idea ever" I thought, and we ordered a bunch of them to run around the office. I'd been out of RC for years, but Mini-Zs rekindled my interest again. We got really hooked on them, racing them hours every night in the conference room turned Mini-Z track, spending a ton on hop-ups (back then only Kyosho made parts, then GPM a while after). That's about all there is to it!

hmm... lots of interesting stories here... well my name is herman.... and yes i'm a mini-z addict too... what got me into this thing?...
er... uhmm... i hate to do it... but it was my younger brother, he's the culprit... he was into electric and gas r/c's (1/8, 1/10, 1/18), kyosho's, tamiya's, associated, serpent, etcetera etcetera etcetera... figured didn't have the time, money and patience of putting one together... so i didn't bother even considering it, but i must admit, it was nice watching the cars go around the track, and even more so during races...
one innocent day my brother gave me one of these pesky little monsters... it was the old nissan skyline gt10 i think... he had the red/white one, while i got the blue one...
it was love at first site... it was really, really cool!!!... i think the guys who put this together should be given a nobel peace price...
it was small, ready to run, and a whole lot more affordable than the bigger kits, optional parts were not too much of a problem since my brother got it from a friend who owns a hobby shop...
since the body looked too cool to run, extra bodies were in the pipeline... got the subaru and some others... well a whole bunch of others... er too many to mention... (if you follow my posts, and see some of the work i did on them, you'll have an idea... i.e. my peugeot - http://mini-zracer.com/forums/showth...=&threadid=971
toyota altezza - http://mini-zracer.com/forums/showth...=&threadid=984
and toyota vitz - http://mini-zracer.com/forums/showth...&threadid=2239
world rally championship series) i was in the process of doing my own version of the subaru wrc, when, aurgh kyosho came out with their version... but i digress...
ahhh having fun running them around... the house, the office, the house, the office, at one point it got boring, and i thought i was able to kick the habit...... but then the track came up ( www.connecticutspeedway.com) shameless, shameless plug i know... i think it was a month after i got my kit... it was a really nice layout, nice place to hang out, it still actually is... now sometimes i can't wait to go there... to keep things interesting, they change the layout once in a while (if i'm not mistaken they changed the layout 3 times already), and hold regular races....
meeting new cars, not to mention the people who are actually driving the cars... discussing some theories, then testing them out on the track (i.e. do a search on lead weights)....
then this forum came up.... and so many colorful characters in here... sigh... i think i'm at home now...
i pass the mike now to mr. mini-z - oops he got to it before i did...
