How to charge batteries???

Hello

I just have a few questions about charging AAA batteries on a peack charger. How many amps should i charge my batts at? I want a fast charge that wont damage my batteries. Also, what should the peak detection be set to?

thanks

Everything below is my opinion... and only that.

That's a loaded question...

Personally on my ICE, I charge my intellects at about 1.2A with a 3mv/C peak detection. This typically nets me about of 800 - 850 mah when they peak. They are just slightly warm to the touch when finished which from what I've heard over the years, is a good thing. When charged this way, they have good punch and I find the cells last a long time.

Now, if I wanted to have more punch, I would charge at 1.5A... especially for the main. However, the cells get considerably hotter and there life spans will be shortened.

In reality, charge them as high as you can afford. If you don't mind replacing the cells after about 25 - 40 uses, then charge at 1.5A and you'll have some really powerful batteries. Want them to last longer, but want the middle ground as far as performance, the 1.2A. Want them to last up to their stated life, but have no real punch, charge at 1C or lower...

As for discharging, I'm a firm believer in trying to keep the cells even... so after every run, or every other run, I put the cells on my discharge tray and let them equalize.

PB

P.S. Personally, I think charging above 3mv/C is a waste... you don't get that much more out of a cell (if your running mod and your not finishing a heat, then go for it), but are much harder on the actual cell during the charge.

Thanks for the reply people. So far, im charging at 1a with 4mv peak detection and it works good.

by the way paul, you said 3mv/c. Does that mean 3mv per cell? so 3x4 = 12mv?

Yes it does... I should have written it as 3mv/C. Sorry.

PB

P.s. I've charged my set of intellects about 40 - 50 times and only now starting to find cells that starting to give up. Of course I have charged them at 1.5A a few times (okay, maybe more than a few... But at $10 for 4, it's cheaper than tires.

damn, only at 1.2 to 1.5a? The energizer quick chargers (which are crap BTW) push 3amps. I typically cahrge mine at about 2 to 2.5a on my super-brain 959. (charging for the punch). I've tried this with some Intellects and also the radio shack IC3's. Both get pretty warm but they really deliver for the forst 3 - 5 minutes. For a longer main I'll drop the charge down to about 1.5a, yeilding slightly less punch, but an overall longer curve.
BTW I'm a noob to electric RC so feel free to correct me if any of this is a bad idea!

I usually charge AAA cells at 1amp on my superbrain 959. They get pretty hot otherwise.
