radio question

I'm picking up a mr03 later today from a local hobby shop that is setting up a track to race there. I race 1/8th scale buggies and have a spektrum radio. what do i need to do to run spektrum on it? is it worth doing it? I know I'll eventually want to get another one one as well to do a brushless class.

PN makes a Spektrum board.

You can buy the board separately, or buy it pre-installed in a PN chassis. As far as a second car and brushless, I'd wait until the EVO comes out next month or so. It's reported to have the ability to handle brushed and brushless motors, and a separate receiver component that could be Spektrum.

The best advice I can give you is to just drive the box stock car for a while before you do any major upgrades, other than tires. Check out what other people at your local track or club are driving. Mini Zs are awesome, but you can easily get invested in things you'll wish you'd thought out more strategically, especially if you plan to own multiple cars.

TX/RX types have been kind of a mess, and there are a bunch of different reasons to think carefully about which compatibility path you choose. You can search the forum here for more info on ASF, FHS, FHSS, MHS and the various versions of MR03. The new EVO chassis seems to remedy things, but know what you're getting into before you drop a bunch of money.

The PN board is DSM2, so keep that in mind. I'm not a Spektrum expert, but I believe they have moved on to something else although I think the new radios are backwards compatible. Putting a new board in a car is not difficult if you are fairly handy, I wouldn't pay the extra $$ to have PN do it unless you don't have the time or just really don't want to mess with it. There are lots of threads on here that say bearings, tires, t-plate is all you need to race, and some of the newer cars are coming with bearings. It is super fun racing, I hope it goes well for you!

The new MR03 Evo should have receivers that cover: KO ASF/MHS, Kyosho FHSS, Futaba, and Sanwa. I imagine a Spectrum receiver would be available soonish, but wont be offered initially. The RWD Readyset comes with a basic Kyosho FHSS controller KT-531P, but you could upgrade to the KT-432TP.

I agree with others to see what class or classes the hobby shop is planning to run, just so you're purchasing a model that can run with others if they are planning organized racing. I'd stay away from Sports or Sports2 MR03 versions, as the newer RWD MR03 has better electronics. Box stock class with minimal upgrades is a super fun class to run from my experience.
