Radio Question

Can I use an AM Futaba radio to control my mini z. They have an inexpensive computer AM radio out now that features 10 model memory. Would love to use it. Can anyone shed some light?

In most cases, yes; which are you looking at?

I use the Futaba T3PK with the AM Conversion Module to run most of my Zs. I also use a JR XR2 for my MMTs and OLs.

I am using the 2PL, works great. One of the nicest things is being able to dial the trim exactly since it's digital. The Perfex radio has too coarse an adjustment IMO for the steering trim, it's a real PIA, expecially if you bump it accidently, and it don't take much more than a little brush against the dial during a race and you are screwed. Won't happen with the 2PL.

I just got an am 2pl from futaba. It works flawless in my mini-zs. I highly recomed it , its inexspesive and has 10 model memory. It works with my t-maxx and nito stamped. For some reason it wont work with my mini-t (w/stock elecs.).

You have the same problem with the Mini-T huh? Does yours go into reverse when you try to turn full left too?

Did you try to "reverse" the servo settings? There is probably a "Normal" and "Reverse" setting that needs to be switched. Losi seems to be backwards as far as radio settings in respect to Kyosho Mini-Zs are concerned in my opinion.

I was trying to use an old futaba magnum jr. that has all the settings, etc for both of my mini z's, but it wouldn't work. How come? It does have that reverse function switch. Could that be the problem?

I just thought it would be easy to carry one controller and keep up with which crystal went with what car.

I've used Kyosho, Futaba, Duratrax, JR, Traxxas, & Yeah crystals in my T3PK with Mini-Zs, along with whatever brand frequency crystals they handed out at RCX.

That's not it. It's something screwy about the stock Mini-T electronics, probably something they did to make them cheaper so you get some accidental channel mixing or something when not using their radio. Anyways, the only fix is to swap out their electonics for better stuff.

As far as I know any brand cystals will work, they just need to be 27mhz AM. I've used Kyosho, Futaba and Losi in my 2PL, all work fine.

Davkin,
The Mini-T combo unit may not be the greatest, but the servo settings also need to be changed on the JR Radio XR2 that ships with the Losi XXX-S Sport RTR if some one wants to use that particular radio with a Mini-Z. I know, since that JR Radio is also the same radio I use with all my MMTs and OLs. However, to try the stock Mini-T radio out with a Mini-Z, I'd have to dig it out of the closet somewhere since I switched my Mini-T over to a JR XS3 about two weeks after I purchased it.

What do you mean by servo setting, reversing? The only other servo adjustment I can think of is EPA. Or do you mean channel switching? I don't beleive that's even possible, and if it was it wouldn't make sense since throttle functions normally, the only problem occurs when turning left.

I use a JR XR2 to run my MMTs, OLs and Losi XXX-S Sport RTR. It's a 2-channel AM radio with 2 memory settings that shipped with the Losi XXX-S Sport. I usually run the MMTs on 1 and the OLs on 2. However, if I want to run the Losi I need to reprogram one of them since the throttle will be "reversed" as well as the turning, i.e. if I want to go forward, it will reverse or if I want to turn left, it will turn right. This is easily changed since the radio "servos" has a "Norm-Rev" setting.

My Futaba T3PK takes it one step further since it has several mixes, i.e. brake mix, boat mix, programmable mix, and so on. For example, this allows the user to program the radio to slow down while turning left or speed up while turning right or any other combination the user wants. One nice thing about the Futaba T3PK is that you can watch how the servos are programmed on a screen without even having to run the car or actually transmit which is great if the symptoms are as has been described. This is also different from EPA.
