Thanks for posting the pics. I had no clue you were filming at the time. If I had known, I would have crashed less....

The visibility issue of the bridge is noticeable in the video. I wonder if clear acrylic might be a good option for bridge material?

Nice low key racing.

Video

70 Comp Class
90mm Class
MOD Class
Skinny Class
Stock 1 Class
Stock 2 Class

Unfortunately, camera ran out of juice before the last race so missed recording that one.

I'm paying the RF blocking film company to make two panels for me. They essentially sandwich it between two layers of acrylic and seal the edges (the film will corrode over time if unsealed). It's not cheap so if you can make samples work, jump on it.

The last race was my favorite . I wanted to see the strengths of your setup, so chose to follow you. That 90 was good through the switchbacks, looks well balanced. One of the best balanced 90mm cars that I have seen. I hope you didn't mind leading much of the race. With only 2 of us on track, it allowed some good track time so that I could really look at your car, and put you under pressure which you drove really well under.

Took me about 10 laps to find some sort of opportunity for a pass, around the outside of turn 1, which was the strongest section that my car had over yours. I knew that if I could get even with you into turn 2, I could drive hard into hairpin turn 3 on the brakes, even if it meant a bad turn 4... turn 3 to 4 is where your balance really showed, and you would pull a slight gap that i could make up for on the carousel onto the straight or into turn 1.

I really enjoy small track racing, keeps things close.

Next race I plan to follow you around a little more if you don't mind. It is one of the best ways to improve as a driver.

Funny you mention that, most of the time I seem to settle down in a chase scenario and its the most enjoyable in my opinion. It's something I used to do all the time with Bill. Melvin and I have had long runs in chase mode as well. Frankly, I'm just glad I can run cleanly with you guys, well, most of the time. I really do try to focus on making a clean run vs. fastest run figuring if I achieve the first, the latter comes as a result.
The significant challenge has been learning to run a clean race while allowing the faster traffic to drive past by noticeably taking an outside line or pulling out of the optimum line without wrecking the other driver or myself. It's not easy trying to get your best individual result while not being a road block for others doing the same. Most of the time I figure if I keep a predictable smooth line, others can pass knowing where I'll be vs. being darting and all over the track, assuming they will catch and can plan to pass. It's honestly a lot of fun when that happens.

Funny you mention that, I am a chase mode driver deep down. EMU and I used to get in late night practice sessions and alternate between leading and chasing. It was like hockey camp as a kid, so much progress in a short time period. That driving helped so much with thinking about where and when to pressure in the chase.
The ability to deal with traffic is key to racing success. Not losing position in difficult passing situations is what a racer should have in mind. It isn't a pass if it doesn't stick. Part of my success is my ability to navigate traffic and I learned long ago about what to do when approaching a collision. I always drive to the point of impact of cars I drive up on, in most cases the energy of the impact will send the cars away form that point and if you can nail it you almost always get through. Can't tell you how many times I have used that strategy, on the track and public roads in my car...

I feel that it isn't a pass if it's not a clean overtake. If the person who is being overtaken is driven into a wall, or there is contact, the position should be returned.

Driving with Sai, Willy and Roland together running a chase pack is really what gave me driving abilities to compete. Roland is particularly difficult for me to drive near because our driving style and setup approach is very different. He loves a very aggressive front end, where I preferably neutral front end. He drives hard into the corner, where I focus on mid to exit off the corner and am more momentum oriented.

I like to use motor drag brake settings to adjust how the car enters the corner, where he typically designs the setup with more scrub and rides the front end into and through the mid corner, only throttling at the exit compared to throttling just before apex like I do.

Willy would setup and drive very similar to me, and Sai was kind of between us. He preferred a little more rotation than I did, with thre center of rotation more forward than I would setup for. When we drove F1, and he used my cars, it was much easier to notice.

Not only does it feel great to run a nice chase battle, but it also looks really cool to watch...
