this was intended to be in the Club thread but i'll post it here instead.
this is a pic of the track at Tom Thumb hobbies in Columbus. This was the first layout we Z racers were exposed to when we first started coming. notice you have fast sweepers on both ends with a slower speed mid field. Pretty technical arrangement but requires lots of track maintenance when we have plenty of racers at once:
one day we decided to modify the track to make our races a bit faster. basically we ended up removing the mid field section and wa lah. A 3/4 oval. We didn't want a full boring oval so a slow chicane on one end was kept to ad some challenge. On this one you're pretty much going full throttle most of the time until you reach the corners and go to a slow nerve wracking crawl. we'd go clockwise on this one and what's really good is the open midfield not only provides a huge run off area during races but you can also fine tune your car or just park there until the next heat starts:
this next one was on another thread but i'll go ahead and ad it here anyway. It's a total revision from the original layout and definately ads to another version of challenging tracks. Again, we go clockwise and if you follow it you'll see a good mixture of fast, medium and slow speeds:
wish i had more but that's it for now. there'll be more to come as we produce more configurations. We're slated to have races every saturday once the season starts and plans are in the works to perhaps have a different layout each race thereby simulating an actual race series. so no more learning just one track and that's it. pretty cool.
1. How do you get multiple images in each post...I would like to do that.
2. Do you have trouble with the F1's getting stuck under the pvc pipe? We raced in my garage this week and (even taping the pipe down) we were getting the noses of the F1's stuck under there.
Looks like SO MUCH FUN!!!
Thanks,
Pianoman

if creating attachments don't work then you're left with copy/ pasting from each pic location.
as for F1s getting stuck, yes. especially when rounding the fast sweepers. if you take it too soon (either during entry or exit) your bound to spear the F1 under the pipe. since things are easier to break on these F1s we try to drive a bit more cautiously.
the tracks are definately lots of fun. keep in mind there were no new pipes bought or old pipes cut to make any of these changes.
I wonder why most tracks have PVC pipe as barriers. Those damage cars quite easily.. At my local hobby track, it's mostly PVC but there is one section at the hairpin that's made from rubber hose, and it feels sooo goood when and if I hit that. There's no crack or thud sounds, and the car bounces right back into position.
Of course, there's the issue of the hose moving, but nailing it down (if the track floor itself is wooden) or securing it some other way wouldn't be too hard?

fortunately spearing doesn't happen too terribly often thanks to carefull driving. when it does happen the good thing is the pipes give way allowing you to spear under it. otherwise there'd be more damage
this track is also portable. it's only up on the weekends and torn down for storage making room for the slot car guys that meet there during the week.
Yeah, there are tons of benifits to using pvc..portability, cost, protecting the car...god stuff! When we were racing the other day we had 2 F1s vs a Racer...every now and then we would get stuck and that racer would just keep going...the PVC is GREAT for racers...they just bouce right off.
Our surface (tar-paper) created some wrinkles after sitting on the freezing cold garage floor. The wrinkles turned into jumps coming out of corners...hard to turn when in the air! We had to keep going fast tho cause the F1's would get hung up on the humps. Man it sounds line I'm whining!!!!
I'm going to rip (out of plywood) some corners that will be modular...I'll tack on something soft for cushioning the impact...speedway baby, speedway!

here's some pics of the track with the recently acquired lap counter. the bridge has 6 lasers and overall the timer spits out some good data. now if we can just work on getting racers to quit p******ing... these shots were taken after most everyone left leaving me and matt for some open practice without the traffic. any red blurrs is matt's loctite nsx making it's way around the track.

Rubber hose is even better, the cars just bounce back better than PVC, and less paint damage, and no sickening crack sounds! Less chance of launching into the air too.
