OK, bought a PN tire truer and once again looking for a power supply other than 2S lipo as I no longer have a capable charger nor want to deal with batteries that are a fire hazard.
Anyone have a confirmed power supply that operates in the reported sweet spot of 5-8v, with enough amps to support it properly? preferable something that can be simply plugged into a standard receptacle.
I have a couple power supplies made from server blades but at 12v, the truer screams loudly.
If space is not a concern, look for an old hobby charger which has a motor run in mode. I use an old LRP Pulsar 2 charger to power my lathe and control the voltage to it. It allows me to monitor my amperage, and this control how much heat is going into the rubber as it is trued. If you see a steep increase in amperage as you true it down, moe heat is going into the tire.
It is basically the only use which I have for the charger these days, but it is still worth its weight and bulk in my traveling pack just for this purpose. I usually keep it at 6v.

If you can find a "Muchmore Motor Master" it will do the trick. They were in the $75 range when they were popular but now with VE motors they are out of favor.
I am not sure if it has enough amperage capability Mike. The Hudy motor runs around 2A without load at 6v, and I usually try to keep peak loads around 4A when cutting to reduce thermals in the tire as it is cut. It is easy to go over 6A cutting too aggressively. I have seen over 10A when cutting down an LM rear tire at higher voltages.
It seems to be rated at 2.5A for any voltage, although I would assume that lower voltages should be able to run a higher amperage???

The adjustable step down might be the ticket as i already have 12v PSU already. FYI, plenty of people selling server PSU’s with bullet connectors on eBay, etc. for less cost than a new PSU. Trouble is, they are almost all 12v output only which is way to much for the truer. Server PSU’s are also very small so they take up little room.
I’ll give the step down module a try as it would allow for the most degree of control/flexibility. If that fails any of the smaller V PSU’s would be a good affordable option as well.
What type of plugs are on the step downs? I have pre-wired connectors for my truer, bought extra as well and one fully can adapt to the plugs on step down.

Looks like many of the step down adapters use screw terminals sbs are not pre wired. There are some which have wire leads but no terminals. I assume if we look long enough, we can find some that are more easily adjustable without needing a screwdriver for the small VR output... I almost exclusively use 6v for my truer, but if truing very thin tires, I go down to 5v or even lower to reduce temperature and possibility of tearing the tire.

I bought the 12A model and turns out to be just what i was looking for. it's a bit dodgy in that no instructions, some assembly required but straight forward enough to figure out and does just what it claims however i've not been able to adjust current. it's likely that it needs to be under some load to adjust. once it's connected to a device, you can adjust the voltage in .05 increments and it saves the setting so you don't have to reset every time.
i attached some photos of how i wired i tall up. i bought some terminated cables which worked out perfectly. good quality, cheap and no fuss, just works.
