Product review: Molotow Liquid Chrome

In some other custom body thread, arch2b mentioned airbrushed Liquid Chrome as a tip from the movie prop world. I have a local art supply store that is surprisingly well-stocked, and they happened to have the 30ml refill I saw in a case as I was there to get something else.

It's around $30, so I was a little hesitant to use the airbrush, as the current project I was working on only needed minor details, and airbrushing has inherent waste in the setup and cleanup.

The good news is it brushes on very well. It is very self-leveling, and has a decent workable time to not leave brush marks. When it dries, the level of "chrominess" is high.

You can kind of see that it's reflective enough to make a functional rear-view mirror. One thing that doesn't really photograph well, but looks great is the headlight/taillight housing. They get covered up by clear (or painted clear yellow) or red lenses, but having a bright, shiny bucket underneath really makes them look better. This worked well for those as well.

I used Testor's enamel thinner to clean my brush, but I think a lacquer thinner is probably the correct thinner.

Overall, I like it, and considering how I usually use chrome paint (sparingly, for small details), it works great.

I've been so impressed with the pens I plan on trying it in airbrush as well. I just hope it holds to the body and stays shiny once I apply decals over places.

Glad to hear this works well at our scale/use. From what I saw on prop sites, the only concern is the clear coat may craze the finish (dull) depending on what chemical makeup it is.
