Well, after reading everyone's comments, I think I agree with the concerns.
I see some benefits with having different venues and creating more interest in Mini-Zs, as well as recruiting new racers.
However, I see some potential problems with having enough space and power sources for chargers and setting up Core.
I see more potential problems with security. There will be considerable traffic even if we locate the track in the corner next to the HS entrance. Seeing these cool little cars will tempt many kids to grab one off the track or a table for a look. I imagine there will also be many questions from passerby during races. I see some opportunities for um... misunderstandings.
I was interested in the idea because I would like a space to set-up the full HFAY tracks for practice (which I desperately need). I am wondering if I could reserve a room at our neighborhood community center for a few hours.
Anyway, it appears that we are deciding to stay with the current racing site, which offers a great host and a comfortable and secure facility.

it seems like we will be sticking to our normal routine for the time being with hfay and dc racing however i wouls still like to arrange a meeting with courtney to go over whatss required for the big race. things like:
-tables/chairs
-power availability?
-some measure of security
-hours of operation? regardless of how short/long a race is, it always ends up a full day event, especially for those of us who will be involved with running the event.
-tracks, i assume courtney will be providing these for this event? it leaves him plenty of lead time to make the purchases which will also force his hand in figuring out how to handle setups in the common space regarding space planning and access. malls may have rules on what can and can't be done in common areas.
spoon ans i had some practice in dealing with public access racing at nekocon which really wasn't too bad provided you are not tied to a chair watching over everythign for long periods of time. all we had there was a couple tables with coverings inwhich we could hide stuff underneath. they had huge power cords that ran atleast 20' from floor boxes. i would assume the mall has similar features depending on age to allow for mobile carts. obviously we would be responsible for extension cords or whatever is need to reach those if they are there which is typ. for events.
if we can get something to rope the area off and have tables with coverings i think it would be ok for the big race. we would also need people to be around for watching over things but i am hoping courtney will take care of that. most taveling racers tend to be very cautious of there stuff to begin with.
my goal would be to get everything i need in my 2 boxes. if anyone has a 12v charger, they are more than welcome to use my pitbox as well.
one critical test will be using core within the space. it will either works well or horribly and we should find out asap so we can plan around it. i don't know if courtney would buy a timinig system as well? amb-it or something like giro-z ?

So what's the final word on this guys?
I know there are plenty of concerns but if we are seriously considering this venue for the final then we should setup at least once before the event. I am sure Courtney needs some time to absorb everything and come up to speed on Mini-Z's. Also, we'll need to figure out logistics such as power, lap timing, etc.
I don't think it's realistic to ask him to provide the venue, track, lap timing and experience that it's going to take to pull of the Lemans race.
Arch and I didn't really have any problems at Nekocon but that's not going to be the same crowd as the general public.

would any of you guys be willing to meet there saturday? i have brandons b-day party sunday.
we need to discuss how a setup in the common area will work, whats mall provided, whats hw provided and what we have to bring.
courtney may have the security thing already addressed if he runs events in the common area already.

done deal
ok, ccson, the ringer, soyverdy and myself met with courtney and i think we've addressed the concerns we had.
we WILL be having the march 10th gtg at hobby works.
Hobby Works® - Fairfax
Fairfax City Mall
9650-42 Main Street
Fairfax, VA 22031
Phone: (703) 426-8600
Store Manager - Courtney
Hours: Monday - Saturday (10:30am - 9pm); Sunday (Noon - 5pm)
Directions to Hobby Works® - Fairfax
From I-495, Take Route 236 (Little River Turnpike) West. Go about 3 miles. We are located in Fair City Mall, which is located on the right-hand side, just past the light at Pickett Road. We are near Marshalls and the Cinema Arts theaters.
please travel appropriately. i will be bringin my normal car box and my pitbox.
next is to decide who brings what amount of track. for this gtg i think we should not bring everything we have since it will involve setup/teardown which we will now have to do.
please thank courtney for taking time to talk with us. i did not mention using the forum to him.
hours will be: noon till 6pm
racing will start at 2pm. be prompt and ready to race as those of us who will be taking track home do not want to be there all night.
please use the early time for setup and practice.
