Kyosho MR03 EVO

http://www.redrc.net/2018/08/kyosho-...o-coming-soon/

First information of Kyosho’s forthcoming Mini-Z MR-03 Evo 1/28th scale car have appeared on social media. The latest variant of Kyosho’s ultra-popular Mini-Z kit will sport an updated front end but the biggest news is the possibility to utilise optional plug-in receiver boards that allow to use Futaba and Sanwa transmitters in addition to the usual Kyosho and KO Propo units. The update further opens the market to more drivers which should be a real boost for the class. More information will become available in time for the release that is scheduled for December.

I like how redrc requests you link back to them as a source when quoting Kyosho as their source.

what other changes do you see?
-front top cover now splits off the up arm supports so that you can change from narrow/wide by taking off only the top arm support vs. the whole front top cover. 2 screws instead of 4... not an appreciable savings in effort although you don't have to worry about the top cover snaps to the main board top cover anymore.
-is the ICS port still there? Can't really tell from the image.

This is more an evolutionary update vs. revolutionary although one could argue that offering any options at all for receiver is revolutionary but I would caution others that until further information is provided, we know nothing of the compatibility of these receivers. More specialized FHSS type bands or true adoption of mass market bands? Time will tell. I'm in no rush for this as I already invested in the EX-6 and not keen to make any further costly changes. God knows Kyosho has made a mess of the bands already with ASF, MHS, FHS, FHSS...

Better late than never I guess! Tx compatibility has been the biggest road block for other scalers to try out 28th scale... initial investment for non-kyosho modular options of late is simply too high $-wise for the entire set up , this should finally address that central issue.
I just hope besides Futaba & Sanwa & KO eventually all radio brand compatible plug in Rx's will be available ,starting w/Spektrum which a ton of people use ...thats one area where perhaps aftermarket can do some good by closing the gap.
About time for 28th scale to step into main stream of RC, it's just hasn't happened quickly enough.

Well, a bit more light shed on this release, it's coming with the release of Honda Civic Type R autoscale. Click over on bigsquidrc for the image that shows the accompanying autoscale.

Yes, looks like Civic Type R will be 98mm. Shows Front Narrow 1.5 and Rear Wide 1.5 (that would be a fun spec class!), and also re-release of Mercedes LM 102mm, a new 98mm McLaren P1 GTR , and 98mm Audi R8 black/red race livery. Info is on Faycbuk Mini-z World Group. if you click on the Mr03 Evo photo there are two more pages of new release info.

Some are saying the Google translation for the MR-03 Evo says the ESC can be set for either brushed or brushless via ICS settings. That's a nice option to have if so. Guess will wait for the official English edition to verify this though.

The red/black R8 is sexy but no one will run it. Black bodies just aren't good for racing.

Re-release of the Sauber is fantastic news! It's one of the more sought after LM bodies but always hard to find.

I've been searching for a decent priced Sauber for 2 years... I'm buying 10!

It almost looks as though they are increasing the scale size with the Renault and civic bodies... 98mm is a little long. I'm guessing that FWD performs better at the longer wheelbase.

The brushed/brushless esc will be a game changer for sure! I wonder if we will be easily able to use them in older chassis. Are they changing the main chassis, or just the top deck?

Don't hold back when they are available again... It could be a very long time for another run. You just can't sleep on autoscales anymore with the smaller production runs they sell out faster.

I'm more interested in white bodies. Might just get one silver asc.

Where are you guys seeing the info about the Sauber? I can't find that anywhere.

edit: never mind, found it.

The real question is whether or not anyone is going to re-introduce bumpers for LM cars. I have one on a 962, and they seem to be non-existent now.

I never liked the bumpers. Always preferred the internal supports. Bumpers reduce clearance to the track, forcing a higher front ride height.

We did a lot of LM driving last year culminating to this 90minute Le Mans enduro race. What we experienced running without the bumpers was front body cracks and popped headlights even with some interior enforcements. Also with the bumper on the car felt more balanced and handling felt better overall including on large sweeper which with 50T power aero might have come into play ( better under body aero with bumper). Added ride height as needed with no issues, this was with MR-03 style front end.

Am I understanding the Evo wrong, or as expected, it's still only ASF-MHS/FHSS compatible? The only receivers Kyosho has shown so far are either ASF-MHS and FHSS. Will they allow 3rd party adaptation of other systems? It doesn't look like the open system everyone was hoping for but just a way to allow one car to be run by various systems they already have so as not to have to replace the car entirely when switching radios.

It seems this was already answered...

The biggest innovation will be the MR-03 EVO, which is basically the same MR-03 chassis, the difference being the possibility of using a huge range of different micro receivers from various manufacturers, such as Sanwa, Futaba, Ko Propo, Spektrum, including Fly Sky among many other manufacturers, which was a limitation of previous versions of Mini-Z on the MR-03 chassis, which had to use exclusive frequencies of Ko Propo (ASF) or Kyohso (FHS and MHS).
It would seem they will support other manufacturers to create receivers that plug into the board. From photos thus far, it doesn't look like a standard plug. Hopefully it doesn't take forever for others to jump in on the receivers as I know plenty of drivers that would enjoy switching out from the proprietary system.

I would think they would use a micro connector, but even if it's proprietary, I'm sure it should be much easier than doing it in a standard mr03
