hmm...where do i start

The 911 GT3 (996) came in different trim levels. of them includes, standard GT3, GT3 RS, GT3 RSR, and GT3 cup. The GT3 RS was made for racing purpose and due to racing rules they had to make certain amount of road car, therefore the GT3 RS road-car was born. The autoscale Kyosho released was based off the original GT3 RS race car which featured a different front bumper than the road-car hense there was the Advan Taisan GT3 autoscale that ran in the JGTC GT300 catagory races. The GT3 RS also ran in the Le Man series in the GT2 catagory. Theoretically the 911 GT3 should've been called GT2 since it races in the GT2 catagory in the Le Man and various racing series in the GT2 and GT3 catagory (the catagory is differentied by power). However due to marketing the GT3 is named GT3, so that Porsche can produce the top of the line 911 model the "GT2" which is the lighter and RWD version of the 911 Turbo.

This confusing as hell model line up didn't became this way until the 996 model. The 993 GT2 which IS the actual predecessor of the 996/997 GT3 ran in the "GT2 catagory" races and it was also the RWD version of the 993 Turbo unlike the 996/997 GT2 which was only sold/use for street. In Porsche's little own insane world, they feel that the 996/997 GT3 replaced the 993 RS. The 993 RS was the strip down naturally aspirated version of the standard 911. It had similar front bumper and rear wing as the 993 GT2. Other than independent company that ran the 993 RS in cheaper racing series Porsche never used the 993 RS in world class racing events.

The GT3 cup is the strip down version of the standard GT3 which added the roll-cage for safety. GT3 cup exist only because the success of rival company Ferrari's Ferrari Challenge racing series that every car start off as a road-car which under racing body supervision it was strip down and all cars should have the identical specification.
