Custom Rims... (Rapid Prototype Machine)

Well these were not made on my machine, dont have one yet, but I will soon... hopefuly in the next 6 months lol... any longer and ill pull my hair out. -- any way this machines plastic is strong... but still not "snap" resistant... so its too weak to actualy use these rims.. I would likely hit a wall and crack them in half or someting... i could probly get away with mounting them for a photo though... why green? cuz thats the type/color the plastic is in the machine

These were a sample I had one of the machine companies make, one that I was going to purchase... still might.. who knows.

They look a bit rough. Can the resolution be increased to get them smoother?

I have an idea for a mini z wheel.I see an alloy deep dish style wheel that can have a plastic insert that covers the hub like a hubcap. The rim can be polished and the center can be ether chrome or painted. For those that want brake disks they can be mounted inside or the wheel could be made that way. The backside of the wheel will be flat.I would not mind to see a prototype of that done.

Sort of like a micro RS4 wheel, but the tire is mounted on the wheel with a removable cap for the center.

ive pondered it, infact thats why I started drawing the 3D file of the rims I drew in the first place -- it was also supose to allow the center hub to change offset, for wide/standard use.. in the front, but its overkill not realy nessessary...

The back of the wheel would be flat aside from the offset ones. The center is only a cover for the hub.The wheel is cut down to the rim and hub on the front.

I was going to have a local machine shop make me some samples but..........

1.The cost would be at least $40.00+ a piece.

2.They don't handle anything metric, everything would have to be converted to S.A.E.

I'm not to good with CAD stuff or I would show you what I have in mind.

one reason I was pondering the hub-cap like design, as stated... was cuz it wuld be the only way to do "moon-dish"

One thing I was thinking about was a smoothie style. But a moon dish is almost the same thing.I do have to say those prototype wheels turned out very nice BTW.

They came out pretty good, but even in the photo you can tell the plastic is kind of wax like... very soft. Hopefuly ill get another prototype from one of the ABS plastic machines soon... but they are likely ignoreing my sample request to hide the fact that their machine likely cant do such a smal item LOL...

One cheap way to make smooth dish rims is to take the red disks that come with the Mini-Z's and glue them on the rim LOL.. maybe dremel off the very edge... cuz they are slightly larger then a Z rim... hehe.. ive thought about it many times, but just too.. wierd..

The whole idea came to me while looking at a car mag, the ad for tuner wheels. Some of the narrow spokes on those can be hard to do on a wheel the size of a z.The idea is to make a more scale looking wheel for the Z's.the covers can have narrow spokes and cover the hub for the tuner look.Plus changing from one to another would be easy to do.Just work out the pop on pop off concept so you can get to the nut on the wheel. The plastic prototyping would be ideal for that.
