Simple Steering Twitch Fix....Finally!
NO MORE paper shims...
NO MORE fuel tubing spacers...
NO MORE buying replacement Pots just to have the same problem...
(Note: this fix should work as well for OL's, 01's,02's, and Monsters with steering twitch, though the pics show the 02 style chassis the fix will work the same on all)
One of the biggest problems we face as Mini Z racers is the terrible steering twitch, especially with the 01's, OL's and Iwaver cars.
Many have suggested paper shims to apply pressure the the steering pot, it works but is a pain in the arse to do and is not readily adjustable.
Others have suggested that a piece of rubber fuel tube applied to the inside of the servo case, this has the same effect, and the same problems.
Everyone suggests replacing the steering pot with an aftermarket one of better quality. In my experience this rarely fixes the problem if the servo case still holds the pot loosely, and it's expensive. I still believe that mounting the pot securely is still the best fix....but how do we make it simple, effective, cheap, and best of all....adjustable?!
I thought about this for quite some time, I have tried all the other fixes with mixed results and I HATE opening the servo case on any Mini Z vehicle.....
....SO......
...after a little brain storming it finally came to me and now I will share it with all of you.
Step #1. Regardless of vehicle, looking straight down on the top of servo case locate the dead center position of the steering pot and make it with a dot.
Step #2 Dissassemble the steering servo.
Step #3 Using an appropriate sized drill bit drill a hole clear through the top of the servo case where you marked the dot.
Steo #4 (the length of the srew you use will depend on the type of vehicle and the depth of the pot from the top of the servo case) Insert a standard Mini Z screw or grub screw, into the hole (do not screw all the way down !)
Step #5 Reassemble the steering servo.
Step #6 Turn on power to car and transmitter. Using small adjustments tighten the screw until the twitching stops then back it off just a hair.
That's all there is to it, simple, effective, cheap, and ADJUSTABLE without reopening the servo case!

i've got problems of the iw02 steering not coming back to center...
if you turn it left and let go, it'll return to center... but turn right, and let go, it'll return only 80-90 percent... so that means the car will still drift to the right until you turn left to correct and then it'll track straight...
any solutions for this type of problem?

I had these IW02 problems as well and found that a complete dissassemble and cleaning of the gears, shafts, and case, and it may also need a little bit of reshaping of the steering rod (to eliminate any possible binding),.
These cars are especially picky about dirty, sticky steering parts, I think this may be due in part to the fact that the steering motors are notoriously weak.
I had to take apart and clean my IW's servos regularly, but my Kyoshos don't seem to have that problem.

Well after installing a standard screw fix, along with a lug nut wedged into the gap between the front wall of the servo assembly and the chassis, my glitchy servo problem is for now gone. Thanks DBR!! My neighbor (with the AWD) and I (mr02) mysteriously encountered this problem at just about the same time. Mine started after I installed an engine mount and damper, and his after changing motors. We both thought for sure that it was something in the room or the atmosphere. Now I'm going to tell him about this fix and see if it works for the AWD.

Please keep us posted on the AWD steering fix. Mine seems to have started today after a few races. Please also include pics if possible.
thanks,

Im confused. Whats the objective? To add a load to the pot? Is the problem because of the pot flopping around?

Well, you learn something new every day around here.
I messed up though. I must of drilled the hole oversize because the screw stripped out before I could get enough "Force" on the servo pot to stop the glitch. I only have 1 more top deck so I decided not to risk ruining it, so I just put a piece a fuel tubing on top of the pot and it stopped the glitching.
But an idea hit me. Im thinking the material is too thin where the screw goes through and might eventually fail due to fatigue. What if we were to epoxy a self locking nut onto the deck and use a straight thread screw?

Yes,wondering.. is the purpose to stop the pot from jiggling inside the servo case?

^ yes, the purpose is to brace the pot.
cementing the POT works just as well in my experience. it's not "adjustable", but then again i don't know why that would be of a benefit. if the pot is secure...it's secure- problem solved re: the pot. RUF turned me onto this technique...some shoogoo behind the pot to attach it to the servo wall behind.

Great idea DBR !!! Very inventive.
I have always used a very tiny dab of hot glue when I install the pot into the servo assembly. But if you need a quick fix in the middle of a busy race day, your idea is the route to take !

Excellent dbr. When you guys did this does it still glitch but very minor like little shakes? I used abit of telfon tape on the tip of the screw since the wires to the pot is shows bit of the wire and didn't want to short it out.

hey, sorry to bring back a semi dead post. I've actually gone with the superglueing the pot to the mount. The servo still twitches a little. Is there a solution to this?
