All I will say is I have not upgraded my PC since late '95 -- I am WAY WAY WAY WAY over due for a new one....... unfortunatly I also feel behind in the know, of PC parts... so its gona be hit and miss on what I wind up buying, ill likely just get a lap top... and be done with it, since I am always taking my desk top places hehe.. lap top be MUCH easier...

My PC

Seriously, this question has been asked before. I hate x86 based systems, I prefer SPARC, UltraSPARC, 601 RISC or Alpha based processors, but they don't do Windoze, only Ewniks

My home PCs are:

Games Machine:

Pentium-4 2.8GHz, Intel 850 chipset with 1024MB 1200MHz RDRAM.
It has 1x80GB plus 1x200GB IDE Disks, an LG DVD and Panasonic CD-R/W
Video is an ATI Fire 8800 OpenGL (CAD) AGP card with 128MB RAM.
It has 2 x Intel 10/100 82559 network cards, one for gaming the other for (when I had it) broadband connection
It has a 20" Samsung CRT monitor, which consumes way too much desk space.
Audio is the Intel onboard stuff, pretty basic, connected to Altech Lansing Sub and speakers.
WinXP Pro

Unused PC is:

HP Vectra, Pentium-III 1GHz, Intel 815 Chipset with 512MB RAM.
40GB IDE HDD, DVD ROM, HP 9300 CD-R/W
Video is a Matrox 64MB DualPort AGP card
On board Intel 10/100 82559 Network Card
HP 17" Monitor, Intel Create and Share USB Webcam
Onboard I-Audio and sub/speaker set
Windoze 98 SE

Wife's Christmas present (that renders above PC as Unused)

Samsung 9100GTX Laptop with Biometric fingerprint security
Pentium-IIIM 1.2GHz, Intel 830 Mobile chipset, 512MB RAM
40GB HDD, DVD/CD-R/W combo drive,
ATI Mobility Radeon on board video with 32MB
On board Intel 10/100 Mobile Ethernet and on board 11MB/s 802_11B wireless network card
15.1 monitor, onboard audio, PCMCIA, USB, Firewire etc..
WinXP Pro

Little sister's PC:

Generic Laptop, Pentium-III 850MHz Intel 815M chipset with 256MB RAM
30GB HDD, DVD-ROM, S3 onboard graphics 16MB
On-board Intel 10/100 card
12.1 inch monitor
Intel Wireless PC Card
Win98SE

Network:

10/100 Switched
11MB/s encryped Wireless using 3Com WAP 2000
Intel NetPort Print Server

Other crap:

Compaq IPAQ 3780 64MB RAM
Handspring Visor 8MB PalmOS effort
Various Intel freebees that may one day be converted into working PC systems.
640GB Maxtor MaxAttach SAN box waiting for a vocation in life
Intel Dual Xeon MP Server 2/3rds complete

Oh, sheezus, reading what I've written, I could be called a geek

Only opened it once, to stick some RAM in...

Another one :)

Hehe,

I scored this free yesterday.
It's an Intel TSRLT2 2U rackmount NEBS Compliant Server consisting of:

2 x Pentium-III T1.26GHz Tualatin Processors
2 GB Registered PC133 ECC SDRAM
2 x 18GB 10K RPM Fujistsu SCSI Drives

It has the following on-board:

2 x Intel 10/100 Nics
8MB ATI Rage VGA
Adaptec U160 SCSI dual channel
5V PCI Riser
Slimline CD ROM
1.44 FDD
-48VDC power supply

I need to buy a 220VAC PSU at 110 to get it working.

Mondo, why is that PSU you need so damn expensive? How many watts will it supply? It is just PSUs don't cost that much normally, how is it special?

PSU are expensive. It's the most essential thing. If your power supply doesn't work well with another part of your pc, then everything is fuxored up. It's also never good to cheap out on a PSU, you'd be better off spending like $100 on a good PSU, than having your whole pc not work.

It's also good to buy a good brand, like Antec, PC and Power Cooling.

I am still quite surprised that PSUs can cost that much. I have a self built PC myself, did it a year and a 1/2 ago.

AMD Athlon 1G CPU
Gigabyte 71XE4 motherboard
512Mb PC133 SDRAM
GeForce 2 Mx400 64 Mb SDRAM, Tv out
Maxtor/Quantum 40 G 7200RPM HDD
Quantum 4 G HDD (could be 4800 RPM, or5400..not sure)
Sony 12 speed burner
40 speed CDROM
1.44 FDD
ATX case w/350 watt PSU
Cheap and nasty soundcard
Sony Multiscan 17sf 17" monitor
Win98SE

It ain't much but it does the job for all I use it for. But back to PSUs, mine was with the ATX case, and that cost AUD$70, or US$39.90. I have had no problems with it, so for other than peace of mind, I don't see much point in spending exorborant amounts on a PSU, unless it was a UPS, which are expensive as they are. I am just surprised is all, that PSUs can cost so much

PSU Blues

If you read the Post, it is a 2U rackmount NEBS (Network Equipment Building Systems) compliant chassis.
These are usually powered by a -48VDC PSU, as they are used in the Telco environment, by GSM ISPs.
The power supply is not your run of the mill PSU unit either.
It's the kind that slots into the rear. It's a 250W PSU, but as it's a free system, I don't mind paying.
I'll click a pic of it tonight
