Static Model Building
Just wondering if there are any static model builders here. Static model car building is actually my primary hobby, R/C comes 2nd. I will be attending the IPMS Nationals in Phoenix next week.

I have been into static models as well for a long time. Some of it bleed into RC's and of course the Mini Z's were a shoe in. Most of the stuff I did/do has to involve trucks and some cars. Every now and then I remember doing an airplane kit or two. If you do a search I think there are some other threads on static models, in one I posted some pics of a '72 GMC stepside and a HD Road King that I done.
Oh, try to get some pic to post of IPMS. I love looking at stuff others have done.

Okay. I won't be back until the 9th of August though. I've attached a couple pics of the model that will be my Nationals entry that I'm still working on. I'm leaving Sunday morning so I only hve a couple days to finish it! I specialize mostly in vintage Nascar subjects but build most anything.

I have to admit I'm not a big Nascar fan, but that is sweet. That is different indeed, not many people would do a vintage stocker. The detail is sure to bring home something.

I've been into models since I was a kid.
'Built all sorts of kits. Cars were always the favorite.
Scratch building or modifying is fun too. I think there are categories for those?
The pics look good so far, goodluck.

Actually, I belong to a message group that's about as active as this one and it's all Nascar modeling, and many there build vintage subjects. I pay moderate attention to current Nascar racing, (I'm a fan of most all motorsports.) but I find Nascar's history much more interesting, especially the cars.

Not likely at this contest. A Nationals is a huge event, brings out the cream of the crop, I'm not quite building to that level yet. Especially in the automotive competition categories, they are.... well.... very competitive! I should be in the running for best automobile at the local IPMS show at the end of September, just depends on what shows up.

Depends on the contest. Most have a box stock category and then the rest of the categories are pretty much open to any modifications or scratchbuilding. The IPMS Nationals are that way. At our local contest we have a curbside category as well, which means the judges don't pick up the cars or open the hoods. The customs with wild paint jobs typically rule that class.
So, you guys have pics of your work?

Static just means it doesn't move, that it's not R/C. Just about any plastic model it in other words. That doesn't mean a good model can't have working features though.
Those are some nice models guys. I like the bikes too!
You guys might be interested in joining a model car message group on Yahoo! that I belong to. There are a bunch of great guys there and all subjects and model building styles are welcome.

Yes. Wheels can be poseable, it can have lights, etc, etc. Not to say a slot car or radio controlled car couldn't be entered in a contest, it's just they typically are not because it's hard to be accurate and detailed with a motorized model, and therefore they would not be competitive. I personally would like to see contests have a motorized model category that R/C and slot cars could be entered into but I am unaware of any contest having such a class and unaware of any proposals to introduce such a thing. I have considered making a custom Mini-Z for the curbside class at the local contest, and I may still do that some day, but probably not this year.

Is the Tamiya 4x4 kits considered a static model? Or any other model kit that is motorized? I think Lindberg had some kits in the past that used motors, I had some kind of old truck kit that you had to build up the electric motor for. That lindberg kit had a detailed undercarrage as well, and can be built up without the motor driving it.

There have been some kits that blur the lines, even in the beginning. But basically we are talking about the difference between detailed static models vs slot and R/C models. Those simple motorized kits just have a switch to turn them off or on, no real controls or anything like that. Though it would be difficult to be competitive in a model contest with a motorized kit because detail is always sacrificed to fit the motor and batteries.
