Finished an Audi. I had much better luck with my airbrushing and clear coat than my last body. Decals are from Pattos, and I just used tamiya clear in light coats over the top of them. Some decals did just fine, but it did seem to affect a few others. The lexan window from PN saved some weight up high (about 4 grams if I remember correctly). I took advantage of the clear windows to hand paint and add a 1/24 slot car interior I've had laying around forever. (It is from the late 80s. I used to buy 1/24th scale lexan slotcar bodies for my Tamtech). It only added 1 gram, and I just taped it in place, so I can take it out if I ever needed to. Honestly my driving is not consistant enough to notice a difference. I had to cut quite a bit of it away to make room for my transponder and the rear suspension, but it fits without binding on anything. I am mostly happy with how the body turned out, but it is a little too hard to see on the track. I was hoping all the white decals would counteract the black body, but this is probably the last all black car I paint. The good news is that when I chip the paint, I can just touch it up with a sharpie.
It looks fantastic! I avoid solid black paint jobs simply because they are difficult to track on a track. Not just for me but for others as well.
Did you use water slide decal or the clean vinyl? I've not had any issue with clear coating over the clear vinyl.
Thank you, I appreciate it. I used waterslide decals. I like how they are so thin. I also like that if you clearcoat and sand them the lines come close to disappearing. Pattos only recommends Future, but I have had much better luck with getting a smooth high gloss finish with thinned Tamiya clear. It did do some minor bubbling on a few of the decals though. I'm still a beginner at painting these things, but I enjoy it.
I totally agree with you about the color. My friend hit me pretty good when I was jammed against the wall, and he didn't see my car there at all. Audi raced a red version with the same decals, I should have gone in that direction .
I typically use the clear vinyl and acrylic floor polish as a clear coat.
It's a rabbit hole for sure... I could spend hours just flipping through all the selections. I still have a couple that I have yet to finish and still find wanting to buy more.
Keep up the good work and be sure to share the results!
